I haven’t seen the show yet (planning to see it some point this weekend) but I’m assuming they kept a lot of the very silly and zany moments in Yakuza out of the show to focus on the main narrative. I agree that the silliness is definitely part of the charm of the series, but it’s nice to see them take its relatively dark crime drama and keep it as such. Then again, I haven’t seen the show and therefore be talking out of my rear.

Yakuza is a game about life , with the good and the bad, the seriousness and the sillyness of it. Watching kiryu smiling as he is winning a tournament of pocket racing is as much endearing ( and as much important ) as watching all the drama of his story unfolding.

Don't get me wrong it's not a bad show, they just chose the worst possible option, not being faithful to the original work. Moving away from the original story, not respecting the characters we love and not capturing the "essence" of Yakuza make it a very difficult show to watch as a fan of the saga. As a crime drama series they do it very well, the actors are great but it's not Yakuza... it's not what we all already know and love. I hope that at least the last chapters are good, thank you Sega for respecting the fans.

Just finished the show. Is good. I can kinda understand people complaining because it kinda deviates form the games vibe (by only taking its dramatic aspect, basically ignoring the goofyness and over the top awesomeness). I think it would be nice if Amazon sprinkled out some silly moments like the karaoke sessions or even some epic build up tension scene being resolved in a Virtua Fight match or even Pocket Circuit raicing instead of a fist fight, plus I missed the epic 1xMany moments that the games are so good. Besides that I think the show is solid. I hope it continues for more seasons. Congrats to Takeuchi Ryuma! I've been watching since Kamen Rider Drive and he was an amazing Kiryu.

I stopped watching 7 and a half minutes in, but I did see that Jin Goda is important already and the 10 billion has been stolen from the Omi Alliance in the trailer, which means the events of 2 basically can’t happen even remotely like the games since there’s no realistic way for Jin to accept an alliance from Terada, who doesn’t seem to be present whatsoever, as well as Kazama not being likely to help him in the 80s since the events of the hit on the Jingweon presumably didn’t happen as they did because Kiryu wasn’t old enough to interrupt. That means that 3 has little reason to happen with the civil wars of 1 and 2 not happening giving little motivation, which in turn means 4 can’t occur since the Tojo wouldn’t be on hard times after the collapse of the Hakuho Clan and Kazama and Nishikiyama Families giving little reason to partner with Munakata. The show is gonna fail regardless, but even if it succeeded, it wouldn’t be anything like the games if the current episodes are anything to go by.
