ND holds a very special place in my heart. When they invited my grandfather to teach in 1948, it paved the way for my mother's entire family to emigrate to this country after WWII. I’m from Indiana, been an Irish fan my whole life. I also lived in South Bend for a while after college. Been to plenty of games. People ask me all the time why it’s so special. I tell them, if you’ve never been there it’s hard to understand. It’s cliche for sure, but when you walk in that stadium, you can feel the history. There’s no lights in the concourse,which reminds you how old the stadium it. The stadium itself is not always comfortable. The seats are old, and it is kinda cramped. That said, it’s like walking into Yankee Stadium or Wrigley Field and seeing the field. It’s not the loudest stadium in the country, although that’s gotten to better in recent years, but it is the best game day atmosphere in the country.

The ND story is America’s story - from humble beginnings immigrants and faith pulled a school up by its bootstraps to become a success. The school continues to uphold academic standards and tradition despite the difficulties that brings to athletic recruiting. Anyone who choses to hate does so out of either ignorance or a rejection of the capitalist and free market traditions of this country.

A tradition like no other in sports. whether we are 22-0 or 0-12. everyone wants to beat the Irish. As Ara always said, ND is a bowl game on everybody's schedule. Glad they brought up the Big Tens refusal to let ND in. All these years later and they’re whining that Notre Dame isn’t a member. You blew it. Get over yourself. Notre Dame might join a conference eventually but it sure won’t be the Big Ten. Biggest fumble in college football history
@wingedbuffalo4670
@wingedbuffalo4670 5 ай бұрын
Never say never @JoeMama. ND is already a Big 10 member for ice hockey. I'd be willng to bet that, IF the Big 10 (or the Big 30 if that's what it eventually becomes) were willing to make certain concessions to ND, we would consider joining. It makes geographic sense with somewhat less travel (especially for the other sports) after all ... but the more the Conference spreads coast-to-coast, the more it blunts the geographic advantage. These are the "concessions" I have in mind: 1. ND is a "full member" in ALL sports EXCEPT football (similar to the ACC arrangement) ... OR -- 2. ND becomes a "full member" in all sports, including football, BECAUSE ND convinces the Big 10 to change its conference scheduling model foer football: a) the number of "conference games" get scaled back to 8 games instead of the recent expansion to 9 b) at 8 conference games, every conference team gets 4 home, 4 away conference games every season c) each team gets to designate 4 "historical rivals" that will be on each other's schedule EVERY year (rotating home/away games) For example, ND might pick: USC, Michigan, Ohio State, and either Michigan State or Penn State, or in-state rivals Purdue or Indiana (and, for example, USC might pick ND, UCLA, Washington, and Oregon; Michigan might pick Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State, and ND, etc.) d) after those 4 "perpetual" football opponents are designated for scheduling, every team can select 4 other "frequent" opponents -- two of which are guaranteed to be placed on the schedule every two years rotationally following the completion of home-and-home contests in successive years (such that it trakes 4 years to run through all 4 "frequent opponent" teams -- two 2 year cycles of playing 2 of thee teams. In ND's case for example, if ND had selected Penn State as its 4th perpetual rival, then it could easily designate Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue, and Northwestern as its "frequent teams" such that we'd play the first two teams in the first two years of the 4 year cycle, and the second two during the 3rd and 4th years of the 4 year cycle before resuming withthe first two treams in a new 4 year cycle. This paradigm now accounts for 6 Big 10 games in every given season (4 perpetual opponents plus 2 of 4 frequent opponents) e) the final 2 of 8 "Big 10" conference games in any given season results from 2 randomly selected of the remaining conference teams to be selected for two year home-and-home rotations until all confererce member schools have been played. f) the 4 non-conference games of a 12 game regular season schedule are up to each team to schedule. In ND's case, we might opt to schedule Navy (honor game of tradition), an SEC team, an ACC team, a west coast team in years where we aren't playing at USC and/or aren't scheduled to play a "leftover member" game at Washington or at Oregon. No need to "preserve space" on the schedule for USC sincce they would be a perpetual now-"conference" opponent every year. The final opponent on the schedule could be a credible, yet not overly tough opponent. g) as a full conference member, ND is eligible for the Big 10 Championship game (13th game) prior to any playoffs, has access to all Big 10 bowl tie-ins, and gets an equal share in the massive pot of TV and bowl $$$$$$$. "IF" all that happened, I could see ND potentially joining the Big 10 -- but it's a way off.

By far the best video on the IRISH is “Wake up the Echoes” - Jerome Bettis said that it convinced him to sign with ND! The best CFB game promo commercial ever made is the Bob Costas commercial for the 1993 ND-FSU game, which may still be available on KZbin. Even ND haters agree that is is outstanding……it coincided with the rollout of the movie “RUDY”….and the game DID live up to all expectations. It was also the inaugural debut of the ESPN College Football Game Day program. This promo WILL bring tears to your eyes!🍀🍀🍀🍀

I’m primarily a BYU fan who secondarily supports Notre Dame. Because the two schools share similarities: -Both are defined by their religious mission -Many of ND’s students are Catholic, many of BYU’s students are LDS. -Both teams have garnered a national following because of their religious affiliation. -Both teams were at one point barred from entering a conference because of their religious beliefs. -Both teams are usually either loved or either hated.

This is correct! Michigan started their program long before most Midwest schools started playing CFB. This also explains why Michigan is up near the top of all time wins, games played, etc. I believe ND beat Michigan in 1909 and then Fielding Yost (Michigan coach and godfather) basically blackballed ND….and they also did this to MSU ! This explains why ND started playing MSU (and not Michigan) and ultimately led the Western Conference (predecessor to the B1G 10)……the 1966 game between undefeated and #1 ND vs #2 and undefeated MSU was in fact the most important college football game ever played, according to the NYT in an article dated 9/3/2011 (I believe)….the NCAA actually changed their rules regarding how often a team could have a nationwide television audience due to popular demand for this game. The game ended in a 10-10 tie and ND still had one final game remaining at USC in the Coliseum and beat Pac-8 champions USC 51-0 (!!!!) with their backup QB and ND was awarded the national title by AP and UPI.

I hate Notre Dame. But as long as Coach Marcus Freeman is there I will pull for them, actually more for him. But as soon as he leaves, the hate comes back. So for now GO IRISH!!☘️

Isn't it true that George Gipp (The "Gipper") did not succumb to pneumonia, but contracted syphilis during one of his many visits to brothels. Apparently, George was an all night partier. I am so sick of the legend built up over the generations for a guy who was athletically gifted, but was not a shining exemplar of good behavior. It is entirely fitting that Ronald Regan played the Gipper in "Knute Rockne All, American" since they were both unabashed hypocrites.

According to ABC, Notre Dame has lost to 38 unranked teams while being ranked in the AP top ten. If that isn't the definition of overrated, I don't know what is.

ND is consistently overrated from like 1990’s and beyond. No national chip and constant losses in big games.

ND football was been irrelevant since 1988! They never want to play anyone who can beat you (see Michigan , Miami ). They try to schedule the weaklings or powerhouses who have fallen on recent times - irrelevant for almost 30 years 😆😆😆😆😆

You need a better fact checker... Lou admitted in an interview that he stole the idea for the sign from Oklahoma! We've had the sign in our lockeroom since Bud was coaching. Once again another university steals our Oklahoma traditions and tries to hype it up as their own.

Please read the history of the annual Navy game. ND almost went bankrupt in WWII because all of the students (all mens school at the time) went off to fight in WWII. Navy saved ND from bankruptcy by using the school to train new recruits. We will play them every year because of this.

@@toejam1992True That! ND has never forgotten that NAVY saved ND from bankruptcy by using the university as a training facility for officers in WWII. The service academies played outstanding football until the early 1960’s…..and they performed well in 2024…..people forget that 5+ yrs ago ARMY actually took oklahoma and michigan to OT before eventually losing!
