I know this is about cleaning a fish tank. But when you said housewife gloves without making it sound so negative. I can say that was the best part of my childhood. My father had a good enough job to support all of us so my mom to be a housewife and she was always there for me. I think it's sad that so many children missing out on that including mine. Housewives are the best treasure in the world.

Beautiful words. I wish some day will be a world where all people can actually choose if they want to be at home with their kids, without the need to HAVE to work just to provide. I'm Brazilian, but now I live in Finland. And here is like this. Lots of moms and dads staying at home with their kids. Although my family in Brazil was quite poor, I was lucky to have my mom at home with me.

FYI - the active ingredient in bar keepers friend is Oxalic acid, I have access to this as I also keep bees and it’s good for killing mites. I use this now, in powder form on a damp sponge, it’s very effective BUT make sure you wear gloves 🧤 and don’t use hot water. I’ve refurbished a few old shop tanks and some no matter what you do just won’t be perfect, it’s like it etches into the glass. Well done though, great video, just shows you don’t need deep pockets to expand your hobby 🙂

I got mine for free. A lot of people don't like the maintenance of fish tanks and then think they're unsalvageable once they're dirty. Then there's those people that don't find it hard to clean fish tanks and know they're still useable. It just depends on the person and that's ok because some tanks find the right place one day...and now my betta has a 10 gallon home instead of his former 3 gallon one lol. He's so happy now.

I found that the most popular aquascapers will use a dish soap without added scents to make the tanks squeaky clean. Personally I use CLR to and a corse sponge or just a magic eraser. Cleaning after with the dish soap to get any residue left behind by the CLR I advise to do 2 wash cycles with the dish soap to really ensure the safety of the fishes

I know this video is pretty old now, so you might already know this lol, but you can get more concentrated acetic acid, I believe at least up to 75%. For comparison, household white vinegar is about 3%. I can guarantee that would dissolve your hard water very quickly. That's how I clean out all the thick water deposits from the water still in the Chem lab. It's generally safe stuff, just don't get it in your eyes and you just have to rinse your skin with cool water for a few minutes if it gets on you. From my experience it doesn't burn immediately, but it will be a little bitey initially if you leave it.

Has a former handyman, do not put fish gravel down your kitchen sink.. especially if you have a garbage disposal. i had 1 client who said i only had 3 spoons of gravel go down my sink. Her garbage disposal locked up on her..she burned it up.. by the way, barkeeper's friend is abrasive to glass. Use distilled vinegar and a few teaspoons of baking soda...update..she is wrong about the vinegar.. you should warm up the vinegar 1st.

I came for the fish, but I have to say; the wood details on your house are terrific. And such a fabulous view! Anyways, for small tanks I fill a baking sheet or brownie pan with straight vinegar and just let the tank soak one end at a time. For faster results you can use muriatic acid diluted with water-but be CAREFUL with acid.

Can you actually feel the hard water stain inside the aquarium? I have the same issue, but I can't even feel the stain. I've tried my fingernail just to see if it would have an effect. Nothing. The stains are smooth the the touch.

Hi! I just recently started watching your channel and I notice in this one you are talking about the woes of hard water. Where I live, we have very hard water as well. I had tried caring for betta fish a couple years ago and really found the water challenging to manage. Do you have any advice about how to deal with this?

Hard water is annoying because of the deposits. Luckily Bettas are super hardy and adapt just fine to living in soft or hard water :)

Simply Betta awesome. Maybe I had issues because I didn't have any live plants other than one of the moss balls, and just the Betta and a snail in a 5 gallon. Everything else wasn't organic in the tank. Almost every time I changed the water (50%) I would lose all nitrates. ☹️

@@holly2043 But why would you do a 50% change? It would be better to make smaller changes, like 20%. So you don't loose any the good stuff of your aquarium.

Holly, we have very hard water where i live too. Our kitchen sink faucet read 392ppm on a TDS meter...too hard to use for anything especially drinking. Even a brita filter couldnt take care of it so I buy all of our water in jugs at Wal-Mart and use some for the fish tank too. Its only 60 cents a gallon. Also, 50% water changes are too much. You're throwing away beneficial bacteria and causing mini nitrification cycles (new tank syndrome). Do 10% a week or 20% every 2 weeks. In your 5 gallon tank that's not a lot of water considering the gravel and decorations take up space so its not a full 5 gallons in there anyway. Long story short, if your water is super hard, use spring water. It doesnt cost all that much for a small tank and keeps your fish healthy and happy.

i bought a 10 gallon tank that was awful with hard water stains . i went and got some ( car ) headlight cleaner . i put it inside the tank and used it like cleaning a headlight .. used directions on container .. rinsed tank out very well and used it on the outside of tank it looked like a brand new tank . and a lot less work that she has put into her tank . this stuff took all of the residue off inside and out . ! give it a try ..
