I have some advice you may want to pin to the top for others. I just did a reseal on a 20 gallon long on Monday it is now Thursday and the silicone is still tacky and smells like vinegar. I bought the GE Silicone 1 at my local Orange Big Box store, while at the store I did not think to check the date on the tube, nor did I think to check the date on the tube when I did the job. The date on the tube was from 2017 and it is 2021. Well after Googling if silicone expires apparently it does, this I did not know, and apparently the orange Big Box store had no idea either. So lesson learned , I'll have to take it out and redo it.

I just decided to post an update to this, the Ge1 silicone that was expired did eventually cure, and the tank is full and holding water with fish in it, but it took three weeks to fully cure. So watch those expiration dates.

Great video. Going to reseal an old 140 gallon that I just bought. One tip for your viewers is to be careful using strong off-gassing compounds like the ones used in this video in the presence of a currently running tank. The oxygen exchange of the tank will pull those chemicals into the water and if you have more sensitive fish or corals, they can die. Thanks again for the video!

Thank you for your very detailed and instructional Video. Your video is truly helping me. I am currently resealing my first 75 gallon tank and I am taking my time and being methodical. Your close up shots is helping me through my resealing project . Example at 4:57 of the video where the tip of your blade barely touch or cut through the seam of the two panels, explaining not to go any further. I had to come back to this segment when I removed the first silicone layer. At this point, I noticed in my scrap that the side panel was beveled and silicone was in the beveled crevice. I didn't know what to do but I remember your point at 4:57 and I went back and stopped the presentation and looked at your corner tip of your blade which was close to the seam. I simulated the same affect on my scrap and I determined the silicone on the bevel could be removed as long as I didn't go into the seam. I hope when I am done this will be my first successful reseal. Thanks again for being informative.

Hate to say this but you'll probably have to redo it again .The reason I say that is because old sealant and new silicone don't bond well with each other . The best way to do it us to totally disassemble it,strip all the old silicone and use something like acetone to remove any old residue and then reassemble it making sure to get it between the glass panes where they meet at . I've rebuilt plenty of aquariums and made custom tanks and I can tell you from experience that this is the only way to be absolutely sure it won't fail . Obviously it's a pain to have to do this but then again having to break down your fish tank in a hurry and cleaning up the mess or having water damage to the house isn't much fun either . I hope it works out for you and that you don't have to go through that . Been there done that before .✌️

I was very concerned so immediately put a bucket underneath the where the leak occurred and l lowered the water and moved my fish to another tank temporarily. I did buy another 55 gallon because l thought that it would be difficult to replace the silicone. Now l see that it is not so hard after all. Smart to be careful of the odor and fumes for you, wife and your daughter. If doing it inside your home instead of in a cold garage in February, you could cover the tank with a sheet after you're done to keep fumes inside the tank and not in the room. Thanks

@@TrafishAquatics glad you’re still monitoring comments. I went out and looked at my older tank I purchased. I can see where there was or is a leak. Unfortunately it looks like it penetrated the bond where the two glasses come together. It’s only about 1/4” long. My question is can I still go through the steps you’ve shown in this video? Don’t see any other questionable areas. Of course I would leak test the tank before bringing it into the house. I don’t think that void would affect the integrity of the tank. Do you? I would also mark the area and check for growth of delaminated area. I know you can’t guarantee just wanted your thoughts based on experience. Thanks

I have a question. I cut the old silicone out of my 60 gal tank. But I cut into the seam in places. Can I run a small bead of epoxy to fill in before I silicone it? Or what is the recommended adhesive to reasure I wont have 60 gal of water on my floor.

Hello there ! Here from Louisiana ! If I bought a used tank and didn’t test it out yet, could I seal over existing seal with out removing any seal there? Thanks for your cool videos !

Unfortunately no, new silicone won't adhere to old silicone, you have to remove all the old and put all new silicone for the best results

Hey buddy! Very detailed video, thanks. I have a 90 gallon that spent a year outside in a shed. The seals are peeling back but I’m worried the silicone between the glass is shot. It gets to 120+ here in Arizona so not sure if simply resealing would be enough. What are your thoughts
@TrafishAquatics
@TrafishAquatics 2 жыл бұрын
Silicone is pretty resiliant stuff, the silicone between the glass is more protected between the glass than the seals are, chances are theyre fine, if you start seeing any air bubbles appear in the seams while the tank is full thats a sign that the silicone is letting go, my 300 was in my garage for almost 2 years through -10 winters and 110 summers and i simply resealed with no issues

33:44 you could take it to your garage right away, nothing bad will happen. If anything it would be better to move it right away while the silicone is still wet, so it can cure in one spot without being moved.

Hi. Very informative video. I just did this but I used too much silicone and the end result was not smooth at all. Now i don't mind it looks like crap but do you think it will still work if it's"bumpy"? I'm incredibly nervous. The floor is wooden so if it leaks it will be hell. I'm honestly thinking maybe i should just buy a new one.

Great vid and explanation. I had no idea there was size marking on the tip of the tube. You said 3/8th but no marking for that size. Did you mean 3/16th? To me that seems like too small of a size for a 55g tank. I did like how you didn't have to tape up the bottom panel of the tank. Idk why I never did that. Makes sense of not needing to do the bottom because substrate covers it.
@TrafishAquatics
@TrafishAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, the tube did have the 3/8 mark on it but on other tubes I purchased it didn't always have all the marking on them, just get it close to the 3/8 mark and you'll be ok!

Just bought a 90 gallon, stand, filter and more through an auction. Saved a bundle, however due to covid I could only see pictures a head of time. Picked it up tonight and have spent the evening watching videos on resealing. It’s in rough shape, your video by far has been the most informative and I will be watching aging once I get supplies. The bottom black rim has also come unattached, do I use silicone with that or would you have other suggestions? I know that glass tanks depend on it for support. Thanks for your video and time.
@TrafishAquatics

Try to remove as much silicone as you can from the frame and then you can simply reattach it with new silicone and it should be good to go after a reseal!

Yes I would, try to do it in a room that has descent ventilation or fans, when the silicone begins to cure the smell is quite strong

Hi there man, I bought a used like new 185g and while moving it slipped from the dolly and the bottom piece got cracked. Im in need of some help to redo the whole aquarium with a new bottom glass but bot sure where to start. I happen to see all uour videos got a good silicon that can hold the glass on pressure! But seems like the glass piece is too expensive for me, they arr saying $400! Any inputs are really helpful for me!

Yep that's exactly how you do it, Just make sure you put the corner overflows in place while the silicone is still wet, That way it gets good adhesion at the base

In the process of redoing my 90 gallon,and getting massive backlash from all of the old schoolers,saying it’s an accident waiting to happen if I don’t pull the panels apart and redo them as well. I’m so confused. Got the old seal removed,cleaned with acetone and taped it to make nice clean lines. Now I’m spooked and thinking my tank needs to be scrapped(I don’t have the space to pull the panels apart,or the time).

5:00 im a little conflicted, i got a 75 gallon so the tank is a little thicker glass, but when i went do to do the reseals i did get a little bit past the the seam in 1-2 places, maybe a cm long, however, id say its no deeper then 2-3mm for sure did not go through the seem, just went past it slightly on some of the lower portions. it very much would be water tight once i reseal it. im mostly concerned about strength of it lasting.? watcha think
