Like sheep without a shepherd. Homily for the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B.

In last Sunday’s gospel, Jesus sent the Twelve forth; today they rejoin Jesus and tell him all they had done and taught. Jesus then says to them, “Come away to some lonely place and rest for a while.”The disciples set out by boat, but the people can guess where they’re going and set out on foot, reaching the destination before them. When Jesus steps ashore he is moved to the very depths of his being because, Mark tells us, the people were like sheep without a shepherd.
