I’m wondering, does the black fabric used in making stained glass have to be a high quality? Could you use fabric from a shirt or yardage from a place like Walmart or Joann’s. I think I am specifically wanting to know if you know if it mixes well or if it shrinks when washed causing major distortion?

Most fabric really depends on the manufacturer. I have not experienced much shrinkage. If you really are concerned make sure that you quilt this a little more densely than normal and should help. I have used all different kinds of fabric. Some polyester and cotton really don't shrink, so fabric from shirts should be ok.

Prewash your fabrics to reduce the chance of major shrinkage.

@@jreese8284 if you are going to prewash either use pinking shears on cut edges or a zig zag stitch to keep from fraying, especially less expensive fabric.
