Spanky & Our Gang's "Like To Get To Know You", featuring Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane. It includes rare footage and outtakes. Other members of "The Gang" included Nigel Pickering, Paul "Oz" Bach, Malcolm Hale, John "The Chief" Seiter, Kenny Hodges and Lefty Baker.
This was the title track from the group's second album, which was released in April 1968. The group's name was inspired by the The Little Rascals "Our Gang" comedies of the 1930s that starred Spanky McFarland. Following the untimely death of lead guitarist Malcolm Hale, Spanky & Our Gang disbanded in 1969 after recording several hit songs. Spanky McFarlane later filled the void left by the late Cass Elliot and toured with the New Mamas & The Papas. She continues to perform as a soloist.

IMO this is the best song Spanky and the Gang did. And they had a number of great songs. First time I heard this song on radio, the ending part just floored me. Still does effect me even today, each time I hear it played, 40+ years later. Music was simply awesome, back then.

Well. I am 70. I was 15 when this song came out. It is really the ONLY song from this group that I actually like! And... just like you... when I heard the ending of this song... well...I wasn't floored...I was BLOWN AWAY!!! AND ..... that was FIFTY YEARS AGO FOR ME!!!!! Actually...no. I'm sorry. That was FIFTY-FOUR YEARS AGO FOR ME!!!!!! Around March...by the way...of 1968. I guess I cannot add anymore...at my age! Thank you for your comment

I have to admit the only song I loved and remembered was Lazy Day, and I was 12. It was a big hit in Australia. But now, with KZbin etc, I have become a big, big, fan of Spanky and Our Gang, and discovered so many wonderful songs and clips!!! Maybe not as big here in Australia back then (?) What an amazing talent Elaine is, and the boys, wonderful musicians!! I can't get enough of them now!...and I'm 67! Lol! Beautiful harmonies and arrangements. The more I hear Like To Get To Know You, the more I love it. Am now searching to buy their albums. Thankyou so much for this well thought out tribute to a great band. Glad Elaine is still going strong at 81. Bless you Spanky, and thank you! xx

As CaptKundalani so well put it, "Like To Get To Know You" indeed took our minds off the war. I was in junior high, an Army brat, and living in Japan on an Army housing installation when a girlfriend gave me the 8-track of this album for my birthday. Both of our dads were in Vietnam at the time. Thanks for all of your wonderful comments!

I turned 21 in 1968, my junior year in college. That year brought America the greatest casualties of the Vietnam war. The disconnect between the beauties of a song like this and the horrors of the war was mind-boggling. Luckily I didn't have to go. Glad your parents made it back, and much thanks for their wartime service!

Years ago I had a cassette tape of the group with this song on it. That cut started out with the sounds of a cocktail party (if memory serves me) and one of the guys talking to Spanky, hitting on her. She acted offended and then it segues into the song by him singing, but I'd like to get to know you. I loved it. This group made such beautiful music, poignant at times and others, fun. I am so glad that there is a KZbin where I can listen, smile, and remember.

This is the kind of song that you can't help but fall in love with. I was 16 days away from my 12th birthday when this was broadcast on Sullivan (he said, dating himself). As Jim Morrison once said, "A child is like a flower. His head is just floating in the breeze." Songs like this took your mind off the war and you could just sit in the park with your best girl next to you and not a care in the world. :)

Great job with the video-brought me back to going into nursing school for my first year! And I'm still working as a RN, too--really blew me away. On this day in 1968 {March 24th} Spanky & Our Gang performed "Like To Get To Know You" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... One month later on April 20th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #17 and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100... R.I.P. Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974} and Spanky, aka Elaine McFarlane, will celebrated her 71st birthday in three months on June 19th...

Songs like this helped me keep my sanity while growing up with a pair of loony parents; dad was a WW II refugee from Eastern Europe, major culture clash since I was already self IDing as a generic American kid and my bio 'mother' was a true nut case, and she was part of why I had to 'ghost' my family 30 years ago. We had a rapprochement a few years after but, the damage had been done.

If anyone tunes into this and remembers an intro for this song where the man asks a woman if she's lost her slipper "Excuse me, have you lost your slipper? There's a slipper over in the corner" she responds with "you must be crazy" - it was like a pickup line-smoother than what I describe here and just a great version. If anyone knows of this please indicate how I can hear it again. Lost my album in 90's that had that intro and my cassette recordings of such...it was just cool. I figure it's about an "original" album as it came from the late 60's and my stepfather's.

If I am not mistaken, the episode of The Little Rascals shown from 0:01 through 0:25 was originally filmed back in 1935. In 1935, as few as 0.5% of Americans had television sets, so The Little Rascals was shown in movie houses.

The original series was named “Our Gang” and filmed in the 1930s viewed in movie theaters….fast forward to the TV era and the films were syndicated and renamed “The Little Rascals”. Don’t know if any of the actors made a cent out of this…Was hugely popular with the after school crowd….saw this when my mom got a TV for our humble trailer and have been nostalgic ever since….simple happy times….except for fears of being nuked by the Soviet Union…😮
