It’s when his kids joined in that I was really moved. I love the culture and traditions, but what I love most (for any family traditions) is that the kids join in and learn their heritage and are able to share in the joy and family togetherness.❤❤❤❤

Actually, that is a myth. There are Hakas that all Maori can participate in and then there are Male and Female only Hakas. It could be that this is a general Haka or it could be that Jason himself is NOT Maori but Hawaiian, and he may have done a Haka that is for men or learned the male part that his daughter emulated. I would think, hope? that some of the dancers with him actually are Maori and would not have chosen a sacred or male only dance that would offend anyone.

It isn't his culture. He is part Hawaiian. The Haka is indigenous to New Zealand, specifically, the Maori people. He is appropriating another ethnic group's cultural identity. He says it represents all Polynesians, but the Maori don't see it that way.

@@harlowesadventuresinwonder1564 are you Maori? Just curious. lots of people like to accuse others of cultural appropriation when they have no culture of their own.

@@pamcourter9186 Pam, there is no such thing as a person without a culture of their own. We all come from somewhere. Assuming someone has no culture is in itself racism. I come from a Finnish mother and German father and am proud of both of my heritages and histories. I have been to Finland many times and speak the language and know the culture well. I also know the deep history of my German family that had been in the US even before it was a country and our family's proud history. I know about Maori culture and the differences between Maori and Hawaiian culture because I received my Anthropology degree under a professor who lived with and studied the Maori. While there are some who will say that they are all from the same ancestors, there are many including Maoris on this comment section and other videos of this same Haka that will tell you that to them it is like a Swede saying they are Norwegian or Icelandic. While they have similar ancestral roots the cultures are still different as are the languages. It isn't the same and as the Haka is very culturally identifiable directly to a particular oceanic people group it is appropriation even if he is 1/2 Hawaiian to lead people to falsely believe that either he is Maori or that the Haka is Hawaiian. What if the Maori started dancing hulas? Some would say little but many would not appreciate a very outward symbol of Hawaiianess being appropriated and leading outsides to believe it is Maori.

@@pamcourter9186 Actually everyone has a culture and ancestry. We all come from somewhere and to assume someone is without culture is incredibly short-sighted and racist. I have a Finnish mother and a German father. I have been to Finland and visited family often and speak the language and know the culture. My father's German family has been in the US since before it was the US. They have an amazing Pennsylvania and Ohio German culture. I have learned German and know a lot about both the culture back in Germany (both high and low) and cultural differences with Germans in the mid-west. I am proud of my heritage. I also got my anthropology degree under a professor who studied and lived with the Maori, so I know quite a bit and I also know some Maori people. Some will tell you that they all have oceanic roots and are related somehow, but most will tell you that they are very different cultures with different beliefs, norms, language, and culture and each should be respected, Most Maoris see as if someone from Denmark said they were Norwegian or Swedish. They all have the same roots/ancestry but have different languages, cultures, etc. The Haka is so well identified world-wide that most do not appreciated someone using or claiming it without attributing it properly to the Maori because it is more than just a dance and has spiritual meaning. How would Hawaiians feel if the Maori started doing Hulas? Some might say nothing but most would not appreciate it.

You tube is full of people like yourself who watch one or two videos that have something to do with the maori culture and all of a sudden ...."I love the Maori people of New Zealand. They are a most wonderful people. Honest and proud. They are so beautiful that it brings tears to my eyes" Here´s a couple of headlines to help support your love of the maoris: News from the Rotorua Daily Post: "Child, 2, dies after Rotorua driveway accident, family member steals from doctor trying to save child's life." As hospital staff tried to save the life of a 2-year-old boy run over in a Rotorua driveway, a family member swiped a doctor's two phones and a bank card and went on a spending spree. The child died a short time later but Melissa Herewini (A MAORI) had already taken the bank card to four stores in Rotorua and bought alcohol, food, petrol, phone credit and cigarettes. News 24 headline: "Shock over Maori infant brutality" They have been scalded, burned with cigarettes, raped, had bones broken and been beaten unconscious, sometimes to death. Horrific cases of Maori youngsters - some under two years of age - being tortured, abused and KILLED BY MEMBERS OF THEIR OWN FAMILIES Among the grisly headlines that have dominated the nation's media over recent weeks are stories of a 28-month-old Maori girl in a coma after suffering severe head injuries, a broken arm, cuts, bruises and cigarette burns over most of her body. The toddler's 52-year-old grandmother was being held in prison on assault charges. Police in the central North Island town of Carterton are investigating the death a week ago of 23-month-old Maori girl Hinewaoriki Karaitiana-Matiaha who was sexually abused, scalded with hot liquid and beaten before being taken to hospital by relatives. The child, who was put in the care of her grandmother by the Child, Youth and Family Service after consultations with the toddler's family just short of her second birthday, was dead on arrival at Masterton Hospital late on Sunday, July 23. And last week, a coroner in the east coast town of Tauranga found that two-month-old Marcus Te Hira Grey died from a brain haemorrhage following a severe beating by his father. These cases follow the recent release of a report into the gruesome killing last April of four-year-old James Whakaruru, beaten to death by his stepfather for failing to call him Dad. The stepfather had been jailed once for assaulting the boy, but the youngster endured a lifetime of horrific beatings, despite being under the eye of various child welfare agencies, and his hellish existence went unnoticed. The proportion of extreme cases of brutality towards children among the Maori population - which makes up about 15 percent of New Zealand's 3.8 million citizens - is far higher than for any other ethnic group.

On average there is a haka performed every 37 seconds in New Zealand. A haka used to be something special but nowdays they find any old reason to do one. Cuzzy Steven has arrived at the airport....let´s do a haka. They opened up a new library at school.....let´s do a haka. Auntie Moana just made her best banana cake ever.....let´s do a haka. Ooooo watch out Mr cameraman. This shit is sacred and you are cursed now because you stood in front.

Enjoyed the Haka, the only problem for me from a cultural point of view is that his daughter did the male actions like her dad and her brother. While the women also take part in the Haka, a lot of their movements are different to that of their male counterparts. Culturally it would have been better if she had followed the women present and stood with them.

@@pechaa Thats a weird comment to make. Traditions are what keeps culture alive and “evolving traditions” are what can ultimately lead to lost culture. Based on your view, in a few hundred years time if the Haka has “evolved” into performing it balancing on a keg of beer that would be ok because it had “evolved”

This is how culture and human evolution work. The dances you think of as “original” were also shaped by other cultures, fads, and time. Trying to hold cultural traditions static will kill them. Each generation contributes to the whole of the tradition.
