Dicky has always been criminally underrated in my opinion as a rapper, he actually tends to drop some crazyyy ass bars in so many songs. But he tends to lean on that comedy more as it's what he knows best and makes work even if his jokes don't always hit, you can expect some form of bars from him after to pick back up the song and reel you in again. Pair it with the videos, I think he actually is really smart sticking to this style of music. He could go full out MCing if he really wanted too, but why change when you are already yourself and succeeding? Nothing but props for dicky staying true to himself.

The part of the song where Scru really starts to get into it is the portion that was featured during the episode of Dave. The part where he criticizes himself for trying to rap fast is a reference to something Benny Blanco told him earlier in the episode. My favorite part about Lil Dicky is that his bars and style are true to his upbringing. Hes a goofy dude from the suburbs, corny as hell but keeps it real. He raps based on his authentic experiences rather than be a poser and go off about a life he doesnt know about.

As someone who’s current with the show, it’s interesting knowing Dave’s ethos/pathos better now, where he views himself in “the industry,” and what he would say to being “not as committed to rap” opposed to his other ventures. Speaking of which, “The Music Industry” vid he dropped is a nice tone-setting intro to the HAHAHA vid if you wanna check that out in your own time. I love the soundtrack (some of my enjoyment of the songs is tied to my love of the show), but here are the songs I think stand alone from the show that you’d enjoy: Honestly (highly recommend), Harrison Ave (music video), Second Coming, Still Freestyling, and Hearsay. I can see why you’d think he’s not as dedicated to his craft in music, he hasn’t dropped in years and it feels like the music has taken a back seat to his show. At the same time, I’m the show, which is based on his real life, he’s such a perfectionist and so meticulous about the music he keeps holding off until he drops music. That’s what the whole 2nd season is about I think. So I think it’s a mixture of working on the tv show and just being so anal about having his music sound perfect that makes it seem like he isn’t completely tuned into the hip hop.

Lil Dicky is in all seriousness one of the best artists of this generation, he may be more focused on comedy but if he wanted to go all in on music he could, and when I say artist I mean outside of music as well - he as able to make his own TV show about his life, he's done everything on it. He's so talented and his rapping is ability is just amazing compared to 98% of the other rappers out there. He's over-hated and underrated because people don't take him serious but the way he moves shows how serious he is. I don't think his commitment to hip-hop says anything about his character, nor can it be sued against him at this point because he trying to expand on his passions and has less time to spare, he's informed and appreciates the history of it, you can tell he loves it because of how he interprets it into his show and you know he works on his ability often whether he drops music or not because nobody can keep their flow, metaphors, and overall skill that good without doing so.
