Watching this is oddly relatable and a painful cringe. I remember crushing on someone for years and my friend knew it. She was very pretty but he would call me once a week or so. I thought he liked me. Then one day I showed up to the hangout and they were a couple. I couldn’t help but stare and my heart felt so completely broken. I wanted to go home and cry but I was stuck watching. She ended up breaking up with him shortly after that and dating someone she was more attracted to. It still felt like she did it just to toy with me. I long forgot about it but watching this clip brought back such a buried memory

i always feel bad for lila, especially the life she has to endure but with this situation i feel even worse for lenù. i haven’t seen the show but in the book she treated lenù in such a horrible way. even made fun of her and teased her for spending time with nino. and while it’s completely true that lenù always denied her feelings toward nino, i feel that if one is truly your best friend, you’ll know. and also nino is a bitch for cheating on nadia, while he hates his dad for cheating on his mom.

Lila has always been horrible and Lenu makes me so angry, because she allowed Lila to treat her like shit. Lila is a horrible person and it's not excuse that she has endured violence and trauma in your life, it is not Lenu's fault that she could keep studying and Lila couldn't. Those two Nino and Lila are not a beautiful couple at all, they made Elena suffer and Elena didn't deserve it Lila is selfish, she always enjoys being a princess Nino is an immature and double agent Instead Elena is good and nice But in the penultimate episode Antonio (Elena's ex boyfriend) did well to beat Nino because Nino deserved it.

Exactly! Lila always becomes a b*** when she gets too much attention or no attention at all. She’s a sucker for praises. She’s become full of herself since always everyone has said “you’re smart you’re beautiful” while Leno has zero self-confidence and thinks she is no good. Lilo knew about Lena’s feelings and didn’t give a damn. Every time she feels she’s losing the battle she fakes a few tears to convince Lena who’s too kindhearted for her own good.

Everyone in the show says that she does always what she wants, but her life is basically doing exactly what she hates. She doesn't care about praises at all. She is the true representation of a victim of a patriarcal society ( Even tho the show is old, In south Italy it's still a big thing especially in the countryside). In reality, Lila is a victim of the terrible circumstances she had to live with. Nino is the true douchebag.

@@leodeca1591 I may understand her more than many other people on the internet. I grew up in a patriarchal country. you mustn't see the story as a modern person living in democracy and equality. Every woman in that series is a victim to their system, Lila is in no special situation more than others. And being victim to the system doesn't justify every action she took. She can't do whatever she wants and hurt whoever she please to satisfy herself just because she's a victim. Nino is an absolute douchebag no argue on that. And lilo claimed she knew about his nature pretending to warn Lena all the time and pretending he despite him even though she knew how much Lena loved Nino. Nino was an asshole in 99.99% of time but he was right one time. And that's when he told Lila she can't speak up her mind about things she doesn't know about in their last argument. No matter how smart she is, when she doesn't know what's happening in the world and doesn't read any news she can't expect to magically be right on everything. And when Nino told her, for once someone had questioned her wits instead of baselessly praise it and she couldn't stand it. She's used to being praised and be called smart and the best to be wanted by all. I felt sympathetic toward lilo in the first season and early in second season but not the rest. Lilo used Lena in every way she could from when they were children to later on. From when she took her to the sea when they were kids to when she forced her to help her with the fake break up letter. that time when she went to the dinner party at Lena's professor's house with Lena, lilo humiliated Lena in front of stephano just because she couldn't engage in the conversation. She humiliated her for talking about world peace with Nino and then later on tried to do the same because she was with Nino. And still Lena stayed loyal to her no matter how much she humiliated her or what she would do. Lila may be a victim of patriarchy like the rest, but she has done to many bi***ING to be excused.

@@staralipour-kashi5312The story it's not only about the patriarchal society, it's also about the Organized crime that oppress the southern Italy area. I agree that she is over the top at times, but the cool thing is the "rebel" view she has towards the patriarchal society and against the criminals. While all female characters accepts that that's the way the world goes (which is not true as Lenu finds out) Lila is ahead of its time and she sees that everything in that place is wrong. She is extremely jelous about Lenu as she managed to escape that countryside reality while her (even having more potential for success) didn't. One way or the other that jelousy still manages to push Lenu above her capabilities. She has all rights to bitching in these circumstances, her life is so sad and full of hate all around her. The time with Nino were probably the only time she felt freedom. You could argue that she used Lenu to get to him, but Lenu being at the time a very closed character always denied her love for him. She is a very controversial character, no doubt. I love this show. I grew up in the same areas and most of the things happening in the serie still happens today. It's so real. All of these characters are still part of the Neapolitan culture. Maybe I simpatize for Lila because I've met real life characters that resembles her.

Laura D'Onofrio I definitely don’t believe that. Lenu made it obvious she found him interesting and any close friend would realize she was fascinated by him, and there were also several major hints that Lila purposefully went after Nino. She didn’t take up reading because she wanted to be more knowledgeable; she saw Lenu being a part of stimulating conversations and realized she was academically behind and couldn’t impress an educated man the same way Lenu did. The things she did and said during their affair also made it evident she wanted to hurt Lenu, (for what reason I’m not sure....jealousy perhaps?) such as sarcastically saying, “You’re my dearest friend and I hope one day you feel what I feel right now,” as well as going into detail about their plans to sleep together. It was so blatant to me that she knew (and I feel the show wanted to present it that way as well).

I'm reading the book right now, and getting to this part, and ohhh my gosh, you are RIGHT!! I just hoped that this wasn't an intentional line crossing of EVERY FEMALE FRIENDSHIP!! Lenù always denied liking Nino when Lila brought it up so I don't think Lila did it intentionally to hurt Lenù. At least in the show they made it seem like Lila really fell for Nino and he had always liked her. It never seemed to me that she did it to make Lenù feel bad.

i think part of her did it intentionally. she always envied lenu cuz of all the opportunities that lenu got and lila couldnt have, even though lila had probably had more "potential". there was a very sinister side to Lila.

Oh LILA KNEW that Lenu loved Nino. Lenu denied it but Lila always teased her. Lila has a high emotional intelligence and knew better. But Lila’s motivations were two fold: I believe she really did fall for Nino, but a large part of why she did was because she enjoyed taking something from Lenu more. I know these motivations. I’ve seen these situations play out in real life. This is classic girlhood, cruel friendships rife with competition and internalized misogyny.

@@miskay5526 Yes, I do believe Lila also always cared about her friend, but Lila went through so much abuse in her life (even as a young kid in her home, anyone remembers how her father threw her through a window and she broke some bones, but just got up and continued to be stubborn?) ...But she NEVER submitted to or even tried to placate anyone, she always tried to stay true to herself but it still must have caused her enough internal struggles and pain that we never really see, as we don't ever see inside Lila, we only experience her througn Lenus narration. Both girls are so different in the ways they express themselves, and how they react to the world, yet they have so many similarities. Maybe Lilas friendship with Lenu also symbolizes her relationship with herself somehow? Lila ends up being self- destructive and sinister a lot of times, but I like her more that some others, more self- righteous characters.
