So great to know about the technical aspects of Hackett's sound in this specific period. Very nice touch also adding the audio samples for the different effects. This is priceless stuff, thanks so much LWL!

Hairless heart is one of the most beautiful pieces of music that I’ve ever heard on any album. The lamb is beautiful from start to finish.

Hackett said the Synthi Hi-Fli gave his guitar a backwards tracking sound on the song RIPPLES, but I never saw him try that live.

I love this! Most of this stuff went right over my head but it's amazing all the different sounds Hackett was able to create with his guitar. He always looked like the guy who was just sitting on stage not really doing much, but wow, he really was a big part of the early Genesis sound. But I am a drummer, and I can't wait for you to post the drum kit tour. That was one of the most impressive drum kits I have ever seen. Looking forward to it! And great job again!

@TheCorrectAnswer56 ~ Believe me, CA56..we are currently working VERY hard on coming up with as good (and expert) a material for the drumkit of Phil's area as we did for Steve's! We didn't have a drummer, on site, to door the tour...but, my esteemed collaborator Tom Lord-Alge stood in for it, did a great job & we're now adding on to his bit to make it as "chock full" as the Hackett video. Stay tuned! *happy chuckle* xoxo Lil

I have been on the list for a KOT for about 2 months. Now that I see that the owner of Analogman is so knowledgeable about Hackett and Genesis, I am ever more anxious to get my pedal....some day. VERY informative.

As with all your videos, thanks a million times over for all the time, hard detailed work & passion that you put into these videos Lileigh!! Also thanks to Francios & Analog Mike for providing the mind blowing insight.

Just so you know, I check here every day for the next analysis installment. I'm sure you have good reasons for the delay, but in case you thought we didn't care anymore...we absolutely do! I'm so ready to get a closer look at that Phil Collins Premier drum kit (as well as the others of course)!

@hyperboreal Thank you for noticing all my little accompanying aural-nuances, Hyerboreal ! It's is VERY much appreciated - in that it took quite a bit of hard work (and solid research) to match all the individual music bed soundpops to the actual piece of equipment that Steve used in each song used. Francois and Mike were outstanding resources for this, true...but others also provided nuggets of insight and inside information to make it possible. For their anonymous help - I am most grateful!

So interesting and instructive. Thanks LWL and Musical Box. I hear they are great in concert. The electronics are as much the instrument as the guitar strings. Brilliant musical magic.

*reddened cheeks* I do apologize, CA56! I haven't forgotten my promise: I've got all the raw video shot for both the Collins Drumkit (ala TMB) as well as the BankSynths special piece (w/ Gabriel re-mix engineer Tom Lord-Alge, Dave Kerzner/Sonic Reality & TMB's Sebastien Lamothe). But, alas, these past 5 weeks I've been in indentured servitude to the CO Rockies/AZ Diamondbacks - providing audio engineering for their MLB Cactus League Spring Training. One needs to work to support the hobby!LOL

Thanks a lot! Yeah I just realized that when Mike mentioned François' octave pedal we heard Iknaton & Itsacon in the background. But since he has it on his pedalboard for the Lamb, he must use it for a song in the Lamb right? I think in the song The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, in the middle section when Peter sings "though man-made light, at night is very bright, there's no whitewash victim," Steve does those swells and I kind of hear two octaves.

I've been a Genesis fan since 1974, I've seen them live many times, I'm a musician of 40 years experience, but I can't get my head around all the technical obsessions with these videos, I just listen to the albums and close my eyes and enjoy, I really don't care about the gear being used, but people do, and I'll never understand that

+dougie hamilton Hmm. That is curious. Perhaps if you sat down with someone who knows how all of the pedals and effects work, you may just have a moment where you slap your forehead and yell "OH! OK!": It is not as difficult as you might think. Its very practical and easy once you get your head around it.

+dougie hamilton I've come to understand that the electronics are as much the instrument as the guitar strings. Believe me, I, and probably all Hackett and Genesis listeners, close my eyes and enjoy. I even did so the last time I saw Steve perform in Boulder. Even though my eyes didn't want to miss watching Steve and the band. Sublime cellular music.

Recreating the sound with all those old analogue pedals is lost on me. If you could go back in time and witness an early Genesis concert, it wouldn't sound very good. Steve Hackett knows this and what he get's out of his modern equipment is far superior. The Hackett of the revisited tours blows the old one away.

@SuperGrayeagle ~ *grin* luv u 2, SGE. So very, very sorry you missed TMB as they careened through from my state to yours, last October. :-( Phoenix gave them a great reception (very well attended, very responsive crowd, here at the beautifully-restored Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix). They are currently in Europe-but, are set to return to the East Coast, in May. Perhaps you should look to taking a side excursion to NYC's Tribeca PAC to catch their final U.S. concert - on May?! xo Lil

@Lasaril ~ Crikey! We forgot to mention the E-Bow! *smack of forehead, in response* Goes to show there were so many pieces of vintage eye candy..we overlooked one that was there staring us in the face. *hanging of head, in shame* BUT! I did get some shots of it, in the frame...so, I have added some short YT graphics to point it out, my dearest Lasaril (so people can see/know what we are talking about)! As always, thank you for being "spot-on" with all your keen observational skills, Sean. xox

Oh ya I think I hear it now ;) Thanks! Have you heard of BYOC? It's a company that sends you parts and YOU make the pedal, for a reasonable price... I'm going to buy myself their "Leeds Fuzz" which is a Univox Superfuzz (basically the same thing as Hackett's Duo Fuzz). I can't wait to make it!

Hi, P.R. ~ While I cannot provide all of the songs on which Steve used his Colorsound Octivider ...Mike and Francois mentioned (as an excellent example) the "Iknaton & Itsacon" section of "Supper's Ready"...which is the music bed/sound pop I laid under Mike's verbal tour of Franc's pedal array. Hope this answers your question. *kind smile* xoxo Lil

Thanks for reply. So that makes me wonder: what he thought was unique about the sound of Les Pauls back then ( I always associated Les Pauls with quite a macho bluesy sound, which certainly doesn't fit Mr Hackett) and how he has changed his opinion about guitars these days (although I not very uptodate with what he is doing now). But will check out his web site. Cheers! More vids please! ;-)

Oh no I didn't mean to make you feel bad at all. You gotta work and I completely understand that. I just wanted to let you know that your fans are still out there and we're waiting anxiously for the next installation. By all means take all the time you need! I think we all owe you a little leeway as it is anyway.

Hi, MiniPhil....Argghh! I, too, am waiting for not just a "good" drumming expert to be freed up to do the "Analysis: Vintage Instrument Phil Collins" piece with me...but, a GREAT one! (I've met and talked to the superlative Martin Levac - former "Phil Collins" with TMB-about doing the piece with me & TLA. But, we can't seem to get our timetables (& multi-national locations) to jibe up to do it. :-( I really don't want to put up just some "fluff" piece so we must ALL be patient, it seems! XO!!!

is he sending a buffered signal into his fuzzes? he's got that Boss EQ right at the start of his signal; maybe the weird footswitch is hiding some routing that can entirely take the Boss EQ out of the signal chain.

@beatroot09 ~ Hi, Beatroot! Actually (and I didn't know much about this, until I started researching for this video) - Steve has expanded his guitar model Horizons (pun fully intended! lol) to the following models: Fender Stratocaster, Fernandes Burny Pink Strat (join the Fernanded Les Paul Black & Gold), Schecter Strat and more. His website Hackettsongs(dot)com features a truly superb "Guitars & Equipment" info page - which provides some excellent pics of both Steve & his guitars. xoxo Lil

I always wondered how SH got the 'out' tuning on Counting out time...mystery solved. One thing I always wondered too was why SH always played Les Pauls exclusively...most guitarists switch between gibsons, fenders etc depending on the sound and type of sing they are playing. But not Steve, loyal to the Lp to the end.

God, I might as well shoot myself for not seing The Musical Box live when they played down here. I have totaly underestimated them, I hope I'll be able to catch them next time they are in town. I hear they sound even better than Genesis in the old days.. and their drummer is badass! Thanks Leigh, luv u

Even back in high school? Genesis had very few female fans prior to 'Follow you, Follow me.' As a sophomore in '74, I did know a senior girl who adored ELP. Prog-rock was a guy thing back then. Especially King Crimson and Gentle Giant.
