I think Steve's "slide ring" was just a big ass thick wedding ring that he would constantly use for his string scrapes.

Another excellent video! I had no idea that there was a modern recreation of the Synthi Hi Fli, that's awesome! I've learned so much from these rig rundown videos, it gives me an even bigger appreciation for everybody in Genesis. I'm looking forward to one with Mike to talk about the Rutherford rig!

@@mattthomasoverdrive4514 Excellent! These videos also go to show how cool and down to earth everyone in the band is, you're really lucky to be playing with guys who are so chill and are also as invested in the music. I hope to find folks like this one day!

I used to have a WEM Copi Cat, I bought a 1973 WEM Dominator MKII amp from a guy and when I went to pick it up he asked me if I wanted the Copi Cat, he gave it to me free as one of the buttons was missing and there was no tape loop on it, he said the tape loops were no longer available but I had a tape splicing kit and so making a loop was easy, I wish I had never sold it, I bought a Boss digital delay pedal and then saw no need for the Copi Cat and so I sold it as you had to change the loop quite often as the coating used to wear off. I have to get one of those shelves for the mic stand, that is so useful.

Years ago when I went to see The Musical Box, I was seated by FOH board, and they had a WEM Copi Cat in the effects loop for the vocal effects.

Are you planing to stream any of your concerts? Because I remember you talking about this in your sheet music video if you know what i mean. And if I'm being honest at first I wasnt really interested but after watching these last couple vidoes about all the rigs, you have definetely sparked my interest. But sadly theres no way for me to attend any of your concerts in person because I'm located in Germany. I would even pay to watch one of your concerts via stream.

We talked about it a little today. It’s a huge learning curve to get it done right, but we are in the very early stages of comprehending it! A lot of infrastructure is needed for it to go well.

Any suggestions as to what pedal or software in 2024 could produce that wonderful HiFly phase shift modulation at 7.28 and 7.58? I have neither the time, money or inclination to add myself to the current HiFly waiting list (!) so if there's anything that the knowledgeable folk who've commented could recommend I'd be very grateful. Thanks!

Before Steve got the Hi Fli he used an MXR Phase 45 for some of that.

D16 Group's Fazortan 2 allows one to customise one's phasing to a large extent, and I've managed to recreate the Hi-Fli's phaser sound in it.

The HiFli is also available as a DIY kit from DEFX. It's a lot of work to get them done and unfortunately they are pretty "small" in physical size, based on rotary controls instead of sliders. But technically one would be able to create such casing and use sliders instead. The H&H amps (and other equipment they made) are pretty common in Europe but probably more rare in the US. The use of those Hiwatt speakers are however key to the tone. Many people obsess a lot over the amplifier circuit but kind of forget that the speaker has the ability to make night and day difference. The original Hiwatts had Fane-made speakers which is different from what the modern Hiwatt cabs have. Regarding the stacking: I was under the impression that Steve never used the Supa Fuzz and Supa Bender at the same time in the same rig. It was always my understanding that the Bender replaced the Supa Fuzz (the differences being that the Supa Fuzz is more like a Tonebender and the Supa Bender is more like an EHX Ramshead muff). And the stacking is Supa Fuzz and Shaftesbury based. Not sure about the 76 tour as I haven't seen his pedalboard, but in 77 he didn't have the Supa Fuzz in his rig anymore and did everything with the Supa bender. He didn't use the chorus or reverb of the JC160 though. I can't hear it on any of the 77 bootlegs. Im assuming the JC160 was just a replacement for the H&H, being louder and driving a secondary cab. I guess he needed that volume given that Genesis moved to arena and stadium gigs on the 77 tour. Regarding Hackett using .8's: were those even available back in the day? I know he uses them nowadays (also because he has arthritis I believe?), but could one buy a pack of .8's back in the 70ies?

Our Steve’s H&H has the Fane’s like he mentioned in the video. I can hear the JC160 chorus on many of Hackett’s live 1977 parts.

Hackett’s chorus on the 1977 tour? Start with the clean arpeggios on the W&W stuff - One For The Vine, Eleventh Earl of Mar, Afterglow - and then once your ears are attuned to that tone you can hear it on everything else he does. We left our Steve’s JC120 chorus on all the time when we did the 1977 tour live and it sounded just like Seconds Out and all those radio shows.

Hackett did have the Marshall SupaFuzz and Supa Tonebender in his rig at the same time. There is a picture of him from I have that I believe is from 72 or 73 on a TV show where he is sitting down where you can see his entire pedal board and the two are used with the Shaftsbury. One this is missing is the Peter Cornish Treble Booster. I don’t think he used that as much of at all in 76.

@@steev11 That unit is not the Supa Tonebender but the Colorsound Octivider octave pedal which you can hear him utilise in (for example) Dancing with the moonlight knight after the tapping solo. They have the same housing and knob layout, only the print is different (purple for the fuzz, blue for the octivider). If you look at the 1977 rehearsal pics, you can both Colorsound pedals on his board (as the Marshall is gone by then).

H and H were common in the mid 70’s. Floyd used the heads. Wilko Johnson used the combo.

good heavens those fuzz pedals are noisy! At least the actual playing masks the noise…I would not be able to handle it without a gate! …but the tones are authentic!
@steev11
@steev11 3 ай бұрын
I tried a noise gate but it kills the tone and cuts off the sustain. Since I ride the volume pedal I can control it somewhat and you are right, it is masked when I play so it works out.
