Yeah, child mortality (and death during childbirth) was so high and such a "normal" thing in those day. And it wasn't restricted to the poor peasants...Queen's & Kings were just like the rest when it came to illness and death.

I don't think they would have called him freak. He was indeed a bit weird personality later as an adult, but he didn't really show signs as a child, as far as I know. And sisters usually had to respect the brother and heir to the throne if they wanted good for themselves after he succeeds, so it's weird to see they show this contempt for him in the series.
