In my opinion when a gymnast can make the skills on beam look like simple skill on a spring floor they deserve gold. Lilia was amazing here!

This beam was pretty good...scoring was just weird in 1996. Lilia deserved the gold but some other issues of score were in play. This all around was lucky that Lilia won otherwise Im sure there would have been an investigation. How Mo scored a 9.800 on beam or how Lilia scored an 9.8 on bars in this competition is crazy.

Agreed... but they also dramaticize everything. So if like one person fell.. "She overcame such adversity!" or if she stubbed her toe.. "This reveals the dangers of the sport!" lol Tim and Elfi are SO ANNOYING. 99% negative comments.

Elfi is a senile old hag who sucked at gymnastics, and sucked even worse at commentary. Fired for her ineptness. Never made a Canadian Olympic gymnastics team despite that we were really weak, yes missed a chance of the team with the boycott in 1980, but tried and failed in both 1984 and 1988, so may well have missed in 1980 anyway too.

@willsbob123 I agree with you, though I think that the commentators just try to keep the broadcast from having dead air. They feel like they need to talk at some point. Elfi's comment wasn't nearly as bad as John Tesh's comment about Shannon Miller's bar routine during the team final: "And if the others were great, she is quintessential bars". I was like, "um....what the f did he just say? That doesn't even make any sense!"

That first thing the commentator said, I've actually always wondered about that-like in this olympics. Seemed like all the US girls were just off this day,and I had wondered what would've happened had they not been, and I didn't even know that it was a similar situation at the Worlds.Not that she isn't amazing-I mean, how is it even possible to point your toe that much and that perfectly!

@custardaghost totally agree with every word you said there. Elfi is a fool and these three are an embarressment that typify the arrogant bush-administration period (I realise this was not bushs time btw) that made the rest of the world so fed up of the USA

This score was very reasonable, unlike her much overscored bar routine. I like lilia and she deserved the AA but please...

She was way underscored. She was underscored on beam the whole Olympics including the event finals where she should have won.

If anything she was lucky she got a silver medal as she missed a combination she usually does and had a noticeable wobble because of it.

Exactly, it's like ''oohhh, a Chinese gymnast on the beam or bars, let's pay just a little bit more attention to that particular routine'' It's bull!!! Apparently she was afraid of that dismount? And with a, like you said, monstrous hop backwards she STILL scores 9.800?!? That means, 0.100 for the hop, and 0.100 for the aditional deductions in the whole routine WTF! Her routine wasn't perfect!
