Watch the full day in the life video if you haven’t already ! This is what a real #dayinthelife of a retail #pharmacist looks like before and during the pandemic. There is no shortage of pharmacists, there is just a shortage of pharmacists that refuse to continue working in those poor conditions leading to cut pharmacy hours at Walgreens, CVS and Walmart. Basically a PharmD -iary of why it takes so long for your prescription to be ready and why the pay or bonuses are not worth it anymore. There is so much more beneath the surface of #pharmacy and the ugly work conditions many pharmacists, technicians and #healthcare workers face daily.

That they do. I call them out directly if they do. Tell them exactly what I think. That I need the 30 minutes to eat well, to stay healthy, so that I don’t need to visit pharmacies or doctor’s ofc. I’m 40 and that strategy along with a serious fitness regimen has worked at achieving that goal, and much more. I stop to eat later in the shift. They need us too badly to complain about it.

@briansc8776
@briansc8776 6 ай бұрын
@@quandalequindinglequintavi5160 pharmacology is certainly relevant to pharmacy practice, but a pharmacologist studies the effects of drugs/chemicals in organisms. Much of the time, they are establishing dosing limits, solubility, viscosity, interactions, etc. A pharmacist is one who uses a relevant level of pharmacology, along with state and federal rules in dispensing, to get the medications to the patient. Pharmacologists are not usually working directly with patients, but pharmacists certainly do in most cases. Their roles are, therefore, very different. I’m assuming you mean you’d like to get into pharmacy as a pharmacist? The definition of “overworked and underpaid” has rapidly evolved since the pandemic. The demand for output of prescription services is quite high, but the reason for the “overworked”reputation is because corporate pharmacy chains slowly wanted to get away with cutting staff hours. Sometimes so they could simply give themselves a steady salary increase every year. With this, the amount of duties falling on pharmacy staff increase per staff member. This depends on the location. I’ve worked for relatively slow chain pharmacies, but very busy small health system clinic pharmacies as well. If you work for a chain (as of right now), chances are you will be overworked. Underpaid? Not sure about the story behind that. An area with high cost of living should mean a higher wage, so a lot of that is somewhat balanced despite what some hear. The chains don’t pay quite what they used to starting out, but I wouldn’t necessarily describe those in my field as underpaid. Your student loans will be hefty if you don’t do scholarships or pay some of the tuition through school, but it’s more than doable. I can mainly speak from the outpatient side of things. I did a brief stint in an inpatient hospital setting that required heavy clinical collaboration with nurses and physicians on the floors. Some think that’s glamorous (not my cup of tea). I do retail/LTC for an independent, and it is leaps and bounds beyond the slave rolling at a chain. We are well staffed, the expectations are realistic, and we thus take care of our patients well.

Pharm tech here. The struggle is f’ing REAL. Got our hours cut drastically earlier this year and have been barely been able to keep up with the demand. Our store is the busiest in our district, doing over 1k scripts a day. We just barely get stuff done on time and corporate is cutting our hours even more next month. Weve lost two pharmacists from this and two more are gonna leave soon too. And I dont blame em. This shit is insane. I always, ALWAYS appreciate the customers who understand what we’re goin through. @@originalunoriginal4055 because the company is saving money that way and they can report “record profits”. More money for the ceos and looks good for the investors while we have to do the work of at least 3 people at once. People wonder why pharmacists are making mistakes now. Its the greedy ceo’s faults. These retail chain pharmacies are profits over people and give less than a sh*t if people get the wrong med or something as dangerous because a pharmacist is overworked and exhausted because the company refuses to hire or schedule more pharmacists for that shift (and then dares to complain about not being able to retain pharmacists!) I actually really love this job despite how much I complain about it. I love being able to help ppl with managing their scripts and work out insurance issues since insurance is waaaaayy overly complicated here in the states. I just wish my colleagues and I were actually fairly compensated for the insane amount of work we put in each day. We did 6k scrips this week already and its only wendsday morning lol. Sorry for going off at you in this comment I feel very strongly about this and want more ppl to be aware of whats going on behind the scenes at their local chain pharmas. Its not pretty :(

Yep, after 5.5 years in this profession I am done. It is a hard job mentally to begin with, add onto that COVID happening and vaccinations, drug shortages, heavy workload, opening of minor ailment prescribing (without additional compensation or staff), customers who want their questions answered in 2 seconds, customers who think this is fast food, customers yelling at staff, non stop phone ringing, no lunch breaks, insurance restrictions, insurance audits, shitty computers/software issues, regulatory changes, underpaid assistants, co-worker burn out, unreliable staff, etc etc etc. I can't handle it anymore. It's just become way too mentally taxing to try to do the job, let alone do a GOOD job. Going to have to push to save a bunch for 1 more year and change profession ... It's sad because pharmacy itself I like a lot. The rest ... it's just too much. After speaking with some older coworkers, one of which is close to retirement I can confirm that pharmacy has changed drastically. They are close to retirement but have said they don't know how us younger colleagues are gonna make it for another 30 years :(

There will always be difficult customers. I use to be a store manager and had to deal with unruly pharmacy customers because I didn't want my pharmacist to have to deal with them. They will complain and make a scene about anything. I once had a guy that came in on a Sunday trying to pick up a prescription. The pharmacist explained that she would have to call the doctor's office, but since it was Sunday and that they're closed, there wasn't anything she can do to help him. He started screaming that the pharmacist was racist. I ran back to see whats going on and pulled the customer to the side. After finding out what was going on, I calmly explained to the customer that we'd have to wait until his doctor's office is open. He then screams "If I was white, I would have my medicine by now". (He was Black by the way). After a few minutes of this, I just kicked him out. He threatened to take his prescription elsewhere and I just told him "thanks".

The last time they cut help every one of the 22 district managers in the south resisted, EXCEPT my dm. They cut this time another 10%, my dm said we can cut 20%. My dm , a pharmacist had never worked in a retail store. When he did this several techs in his district quit including Both experienced techs in a nearby store. My dm who didn’t give a d about patients safety , took my one tech , already down from two. I told the b this is unacceptable! He said that’s the way it is. This was on Friday. On Saturday I told him I would not be at work on Monday. He said don’t bother coming in tomorrow either, not to complete the two weeks notice. I said ok. About 5 minutes before closing he called and said would you please work Sunday. I did. I knew it was the same no matter where I went. At 62, I went ahead and retired , 7 years before I had planned to. I don’t regret it, but I didn’t plan on it.😅

So would being a pharm tech at a hospital be better?
@lilitmac
@lilitmac Ай бұрын
I suggest looking into PBM or work from home opportunities with hospitals, insurance companies or even cvs, technicians are able to process claims, RXs, requests from home and don’t have to deal with anyone. I have lots of pharmacy technicians working with me from home and everyone is very content

Dang to know you went to school for that, I figured you would have known what you got into .. the pharmacy is the last place anyone wants to go to let alone work there. Besides in my state you don't have to go to school for it they pay for a course for medical knowledge while you work there. I think some people need to explore other states if they want something specific

period… and I don’t deal with blatant disrespect or ignorance… I always tell the ignorant ones that come in and act like we are a fast food joint they can transfer out as we deal with meds that can cause harm and even death if given the wrong thing.. Not risking my license because you have no manners or can’t comprehend the consequences of a misfill… The same ones acting like dicks be the main ones wanting to sue when they get the wrong thing.. gtfoh….

First off you not supposed to be recording anything in a pharmacy. Without company permission. So you might need to stay resigned.

@@M.T.B.462 I'm talking about the way they work vs how a nurse has to work. I've been hearing stories from some pharmacists on social media about their tiresome working conditions and it sounded alot like how I used to hold it down at starbucks which is basically fast food coffee. I could change the joke to say fast food doctors or something if I underestimated how much a pharmacist does in their job vs a nurse, but idk what else you want me to do bout that
