Either people never thought about it, did not care, or forgot that he's around 18 and Mia was about 14 or 15 when they started dating. I don't mind age gaps, but Mia was too young and immature for Michael. Him pressuring her for sex was slimey too. I liked the other guy, JP I think his name was, she started dating, but the author just had to make him a user all along.
@Nightman221kАй бұрын
@@dustymuffincop I wish that the author had just had JP turn out to be a decent guy who wasn’t using Mia. I feel like Meg Cabot was trying to over completely for the fact that Michael was awful so she had to make JP worse to make Michael look better. At least before the JP reveal he had similar interests to Mia and was close in age to her. Michael made fun of Mia’s interests a lot or thought they were dumb and treated her like she owed him sex.
@dustymuffincopАй бұрын
@@Nightman221k I agree. It sucks that Meg Cabot made JP into such a jerk in an effort to boost up Michael. Michael was slimey for pressuring his girlfriend for sex. As for him being unsupportive, JP was unsupportive maybe once or twice time versus the many times Michael wasn't. Yet Mia still gushes over Michael like no tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if Michael thought Mia's book was cheesy and said what she wanted to hear to get her to like him back. I was disgusted when Michael still made moves on her despite her being in a relationship. It doesn't surprise me since he admitted he was sleeping with a girl with a boyfriend. He also is a piece of work for calling out Mia's dad for their contract but keeps trying to sleep with an underage girl. Michael was a walking red flag with a few good moments.

I had a friend kind of like Lily. I had a "best" friend in 5th grade who stopped hanging out with me the moment my grades got higher and I was making more friends. She told me she wanted us to be best friends back in the beginning of the second semester, then later suddenly didn't want to hang out with me, then she'd tell other girls at school that I was "following her". Apparently asking the person, who said herself that SHE wanted to be best friends, if they want to play with you more, maybe like 2 or 3 days a week, is "following"? I also noticed that she'd only accuse me of following her or get her other friend to "confront" me if I was playing with someone else the day prior when SHE wanted to play with me all of the sudden. She was rotten. She was fine with me when I was a shy loner known for finishing my work late, but once I started making more friends and doing better in my classes, while she was still doing badly in school, suddenly I was a burden to be around.
@snowangelncАй бұрын
I had one like that too in elementary school. To everyone we were best friends, but in reality she considered me her personal property. Any time I tried to play with someone other than her she would sabotage it by using that free time to go around to all of the other girls in our class and making up lies about how I'd told her I hated her and didn't want to be her friend anymore. Then she and a couple of other girls would come over to me, her in tears and the other ones with their arms over her shoulder, and then berate me for being such a terrible person. Then all of the other girls would have nothing to do with me until I appeased her by going back to playing with her. I remember one time trying to stand up for myself by calling her out on what she was doing and staying with the other kids I was playing with, but it didn't work. We were playing a game of foursquare, and I was waiting my turn in line. Out of the six or seven girls playing, they all gave the ones behind me line 'backsies,' and then did the same every time another player had to go out and had to get back in line, making a point of letting me know that I was not going to be getting a turn to play. The obvious question was that if they were so concerned with punishing someone for not playing with this girl, why didn't any of them go play with her. Looking back now I can see that we all knew that she was a clingy, controlling, insecure leech. The thing was, as long as she has someone to latch onto she would be satisfied and leave everyone else alone, so I got to be the sacrificial lamb. A big relief finally came in eight grade when her dad got a new job and they ended up moving to another state, but it didn't end there. It was a small town and the pool of potential friends didn't change much from elementary to middle to high school, and it had been established for years now that I didn't socialize with any of these other girls and they didn't socialize with me. That's a difficult cycle for a young, bullied teenager to break all on her own

I love this take! I just rewatched this movie last week, and Lily’s mouth always got on my nerves but I never realized just how shitty of a friend she was to Mia. I’m so glad Mia got a boost in self-esteem, especially by the second movie. But I’m glad she did so in this movie without Lily’s encouragement and affirming like a true friend would. And I’m glad she told her to shut up when Lily kept going on and on about Mia’s new look. Lily was truly miserable and needed therapy.

Lily was envious and wanted Mia at her level. She didn't want her friend to surpass her and feared that she would get left behind. I understand her not wanting to lose a friend but she could've have talked to Mia about it. However, to expect Mia to dim her light shows how insecure and envious she was. She was envious of popular people not because they were mean but due to her social status. She felt that she was valid in her feelings and got mad when Mia didn't tell her everything. Mia had a right not to tell her everything, She was negative about everything its one thing to weigh the pro's and con's ,but she was one sided and was always judging. I had a friend that was super negative about things others did no matter how positive it was. However, she wanted everyone to support her poor choices that would always backfire. I recalled calling out her projections and left her. She would make snide remarks about college. She was bitter because I graduated twice and she dropped out. She didn't even try when encourage, she definitely prey on your downfall. However, I called out all of her failures and made a remark that my failures always shows effort but pays off. I agree with you on leaving people like this alone; some people change and some don't but once you cross that line with me its over. I forgive my friend that was like lily but I don't trust her. My advice is that we all have ups and downs but having somebody around that is hyper focused on you failing is weird. We've all had moments to where something didn't go as planned. These people want to focus on your failure but can't stand when you mention that romantic relationship, poor grades, losing something, and job loss of theirs. My ex friend lost all of her friends and she didn't have many to begin with. She would constantly try to belittle things and then copy cat it. There are signs please don't ignore it. She went from praising my every move to attacking it. She has lost multiple jobs, pets, cars, home , and boyfriend. My life and others lives were better because we took accountability, and we understood that it's better to fail than to have not tried. The crazy thing was even during my dark moments I was happy for her. I think this was why I got the better end of the stick, you can't lost when you're pure in your intentions. She lied about most of her blessings and they were always short lived, mostly bad karma due to her ways. She also tried to sneak around with a mutual friend's boyfriend. She almost got beaten up and recently she posted about getting cheated on. She also asked another mutual if she cared if she dated her ex. She always wanted what other had or has which is a red flag. she would try to sabotage people big event by purposely not showing up. She would call them and talk about herself and her events that she planned. Her parents ended up not attending her graduation at high school. She also ditched my friend's prom; He asked her to be his date and she waited super late to tell him she isn't going. She didn't congratulate, me until 3 months later after finishing college. My mom couldn't stand her and now I see what she was picking up on. I haven't returned her texts messages and this happened in 2019. She's famous for tying to come back after people cut her off.

Making Mia cry and not immediately stopping and apologizing is what cemented it for me. I’ve seen friendships where either one or both friends tag on each other or look like sarcastic a-holes from the outside but the difference is when one person accidentally took their friendly banter too far, they acknowledge their mess up and remedy the situation because they don’t want to actually hurt their friends. Lily wanted to hurt Mia. She wanted Mia to feel bad about her new look.

Does Janice from Mean Girls count? That girl is so wrapped up in her identity as the "anti-regina" it hurts. Then again upon a rewatch you notice that Janice and Cady don't actually come off as friends at all, they barely get to interact with each other outside of school stuff and before infiltrating Regina's group that they don't really get to interact as friends, meaning when Janice later calls out Cady like she has abandoned them, i'm like, girl the only reason you two hang out was because of your plan to destroy Regina. Make up your mind! Then again i don't mind this character archetype it does provide conflict between characters, AS LONG as they get to be called out for their bs behavior and make up efforts to become better people.

I never became successful like Mia, but I was used to having my smaller successes talked down or my interests and behavior mocked and policed. I cut ties with this friend gradually after middle school and we don’t speak anymore. I think i kinda see what they were trying to do with Lilly feeling that once Mia got a glow up; she felt a bit threatened. But i dont think they wrote the character too well and way too toxic.

I never liked Lily she was pretty annoying and just a jealous of how pretty Mia looked after her make over .At least Micheal was nice about it
