Of course that's exactly what people always say and said at the time when this was modern music, like: Real music does not need electric instruments, loud amplifiers and manic screaming! The means used really don't matter, they were just as keen, or pushed by record labels, to produce 'hits'. Styles and fashion are ever-changing, business not much. I guess the main difference is that nowadays most artists and producers try to find 'the formula' for success instead of being actually creative and just taking a shot at something great happening.

There was no template back then, these guys were creating a new genre of music. Their creativity and their skill just breathtaking. So good to see your face relax during the song. I'm one generation ahead of you and I remember the first time I heard Child in Time in the late 1990s when it was remastered and relaunched. And guess what these guys still tour, some are dead, but Gillian is still singing. They don't do Child in Time Anymore cause this is really not for 75 yos to sing. But they're still surprisingly great.

The thing that really amazes me is the audience. This looks like a Prozac test panel. I think I saw one of them actually blink. When I first saw the Machine Head tour I couldn't sit in my seat. The bands of the 60s and 70s were creating new paths into Rock n' Roll. Most of them were geniuses ahead of their time, coming together to jam out sonic alchemy. Like freestyle/beat poetry that hits you in the soul like a one inch punch from Bruce Lee leaving you breathless. And freestyle painting the air with music so new and vibrant you swear you could see colors all around you. And it's still ever evolving. But it's as rare as black diamonds these days to find artists that can capture tgat same awesomeness and wonder that was experienced in those days.

My uncle was a huge fan of DP and died far too young at 51. One of his requests for his funeral was that this song would be played. What he didn't know was that the church organist also was a fan of DP. He played the best version of this song I've heard on the church pipe organs with the church choir doing the "Oooooh" parts. I've been to a few epic concerts in my life but nothing can ever top that. He even did the guitar solo at the end on those pipes! If you're imaging something epic: Quadruple that. I just wish he was there to hear it! I already loved the song and the band before this, but that experience just made it one of the most special songs of my life.

Ian Gillan, the singer, had a vocal range of four + octaves, which is pretty huge. It's a similar range to Freddy Mercury. The other thing I find interesting is Ritchie Blackmore's guitar style. It was frequently said he was very egotistical, but in this he is very much "part of the band" making a wonderful driving contribution.

This was 1970 when Deep Purple (w/ new vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover) were re-introducing themselves as a hard rock band... Initially, Deep Purple was founded in 1968 as a pop rock band comprised of studio pro musicians and got some success w/ cover songs like - 'Hush' ... 'Kentucky woman'... But after hearing the music of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin by 1969, the band wanted a heavier sound. Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) wanted Deep Purple to record 'heavy' music and enlisted Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass) to the band w/ founding members Jon Lord (organ/ keys) and Ian Paice (drums) and their 4th studio album 'In rock' in 1970 launched the band as one of the pioneers of the heavy metal/ hard rock genre, alongside Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. This line-up in the 70's delivered the iconic albums - 'Fireball' (1971)... 'Machine head' (1972)... 'Who do we think we are' (1973)... as well as the stellar live album 'Made in Japan' (1972) Unfortunately, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's demanding & unpredictable personality led to difficulties and tensions within the band... it created quite a few line-up changes... Ian Gillan and Roger Glover were replaced in 1974 by David Coverdale (vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass + vocals) and Deep Purple got even bigger w/ the albums 'Burn' and 'Stormbringer' in '74. However, Ritchie Blackmore ended up leaving Deep Purple in 1975 and formed the band Rainbow w/ singer Ronnie James Dio... Deep Purple hired Tommy Bolin (guitar) for 1 album ('Come taste the band') in '75... but fans were not interested in the band without Blackmore on guitar... Deep Purple split up by 1976 and guitarist Tommy Bolin soon passed away from an OD. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore is considered one of the greatest composers and guitar players... but he could also be difficult, uncompromising and unpredictable w/ his moods... When he was good, no one could come close to his brilliance onstage... However, if he wasn't happy, he would be awful and erratic while playing... When he had his band Rainbow between 1975 and 1984, Blackmore went through quite a few members, include 3 vocalists... One example would be the 1993 live concert video 'Come hell or high water' by Deep Purple, where he was upset w/ a cameraman's position onstage and refused to play half the first song... then, he proceeded to dump water on him while the band played... Keyboardist Jon Lord recalled that he worked hard that night just to get Blackmore to play and engage w/ the band onstage... Blackmore was clearly not happy in Deep Purple and quit soon after... But that 1993 show was in sharp contrast to the brilliance that fans heard on their 1972 album 'Made in Japan. In 1984, Deep Purple reunited the classic line-up (Blackmore/ Gillan/ Glover/ Lord/ Paice) and released the album 'Perfect strangers' for a successful comeback... But the same tensions between Gillan and Blackmore in the 80's led to guitarist Ritchie Blackmore leaving Deep Purple permanently by 1993 (Blackmore currently records and tours as a semi-acoustic band Blackmore's Night w/ his wife Candace Night on vocals) Deep Purple recruited Steve Morse (guitar) in 1994 and carried on recording and touring... founding keyboardist Jon Lord amicably left the band in 2002 to work on classical music projects; Jon Lord passed away in 2012 from cancer. Don Airey (keyboards) joined Deep Purple around 2003... Guitarist Steve Morse recently left the band and was replaced in 2022 by Simon McBride (guitar)... and Deep Purple have a new album out this year titled "= 1"... w/ 2 new singles out now - 'Pictures of you' ... 'Portable door'. Some of Deep Purple's iconic songs: 'Smoke on the water' ... 'Fireball' ... 'Highway star' ... 'Perfect strangers' ... 'Black night' ... 'Burn' ... 'Soldier of fortune' ... 🔥🔥🤘🤘

Great video! I was at Yankee Stadium for Pink Floyd on the Division Bell tour and they did Comfortably Numb and it was epic. Please react to all of Wish You Were Here; you won't be disappointed.

Yeah, so much talent in Deep Purple, especially Ritchie Blackmore lead guitar, Jon Lord electric organ and Ian Gillan vocals. As well as listening to more Deep Purple, you should also check out Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. A Light In The Black is my favourite Rainbow track. x

One of the forefathers of Heavy Metal! Gillan on vocals inspired so many Metal vocalists, Blackmore on guitar the riff master, inspired multiple generations of future shredders, Lord on the keyboards untouchable legend. What a band, live were incredible, just magical!

This song was a hit in the late 60', early 70's when the protests and demonstrations about the Vietnam war (police action/conflict) was at it's peak and people were over the violence caused by it. A lot of the big groups had their (passive) protest songs, checkout any of the groups in the 60/70's. It was a war that was hard to understand, then there was the other countries fighting because America said they had to.

0:58 - I'm always waiting for this dissonant part to see, by people's reactions, who knows about music and who doesn't. If it makes them feel something, then I know they do. 🙂 (don't mind me, I just like to observe people reacting to music)

I was born during the end of the soviet union to young parents. My dad had deep purple and AC/DC tapes that were somehow smuggled behind the iron curtain. One of my first memories is us driving whith me in the back seat, after the soviet union had collapsed, listening to this song and him talking to my mom, how one day he might be able to see them live. I've seen them live twice, both with my dad. I am so lucky my dad had such an amazing taste in music - pretty sure we could still share playlists.

THE BEST REACTION, or at least the real understanding of this song. Indeed, this is a song about the war and the people crying for their children, for the innocent persons death by the war. I really love your reaction, you are a very sensitive person, this is a great song, maybe one of the most beautiful compositions by Deep Purple. But there are more than only sadness, there is also good and happy feelings by this great band, I recommend you to react to some other great songs like HIGHWAY STAR, LAZY, and STRANGE KIND OF WOMAN from their live album called MADE IN JAPAN from 1972. Thank you, it was a pleasure to watch you react through the entire song, your face, your eyes, your arms moving were so special. Thank you again.

At the time when this song was popular, there was also a war in Vietnam! This song was meant to highlight the cruelty of war... Because war is not a means of strength, it is only cruelty...

Great reaction Lily. I like how you emotionally immersed yourself in this performance. Ian Gillan has a hell of voice and Richie Blackmore is a great guitarist and Jon Lord was exceptional on the keyboards. This is obviously a protest song about the war in Vietnam. Richie Blackmore went on to form the band Rainbow. Recommend next the song Highway Star
