There's a trick to doing the delta engine. When you release the tensioner on the belt the cam closest to the firewalls gonna be off one tooth. To solve this align that cam one tooth off so when tension is released it lines up perfect. Always roll engine over by hand twice to see if marks still align

@@milo1102 You turn the firewall-side cam one tooth toward the radiator (clockwise). When tension is applied to the timing belt, the firewall-side cam will rotate toward the firewall (counter-clockwise) and the timing marks will line up.

@@Lilmiddwest This was helpful as I'm preparing to do a timing belt replacement as a "hail Mary" attempt at fixing my Tiburon's engine at least for the time being - it's developed a slight knock that was originally only detectable at ~1500 rpm, but is now also present at idle. I bought the car well-used (180k miles on it) and after doing a bunch of cosmetic and electrical work on it, I replaced the valve cover gaskets, vacuum lines, spark plugs and plug wires. It ran fine for about a day after that, after which I noticed the knock. I decided to change the oil, thinking it might have run its course, but during that operation I found some metal residue in the oil and around the groove at the top of the oil cap hole. Now, *some* amount of metal is "normal" as there's some grinding happening when the car is started after having sat for a few months (it was barely driven for a year before I bought it, and I had it sitting for about three months while I fixed other stuff), but I'm worried that the old engine might have chafed a bearing. In the best case the knocking is coming from an old timing belt tensioner or worn water pump bearing - so I'll do the timing belt job first to see if the situation improves. If it doesn't... well, then it's time to pull and rebuild the engine. Replacing the timing belt with the engine still in the car is going to be a bit of a major pain, but a lot less so than pulling it out completely. The Tiburon might not be fast or powerful, but it's a nice enough project car that I'd like to keep it for a few years.

@@peterjohnson9438 there shouldn't have any metal on oil cap. But there is something went bad. Hyundai 2.7 engine are cheap and not bad to reseal engine. I'm still waiting on mechine shop and I can show building engine. Hyundai Tiburon is nice car but aftermarket support sucks because Hyundai owners are cheapass a big reason why a lot business went out and or discounted parts.

none on the oil cap, but some in the groove that's behind the cap seal.. I honestly don't get it, but that's where I found it. I also found some shiny in the oil I dumped out, though not enough to create any kind of clump on a magnet. I'm going to go autopsy the oil filter; if that looks like a unicorn's flesh light, I think I'll start prepping for a teardown.

I just show if you are 180 degrees of timing you can still timing it. Remember the camshaft turns half as fast as the crankshaft. I been running engine few hundred miles without any issues

But if I am replacing it myself, I should make sure what I have before hand is lined up with the marks first, and continue to keep the Marks lined upbu installing new belt,,, right? I am thinking of replacing it because I have misfires on 1,3 and 5. And one forum said that this may be due to the auto tensioner leaking oil??? I thought that woulda screwed timing on all cylinders?? Then looking at how I have it all off, maybe the even side of cylinders may maintain their teeth but the tensioner side may slack a bit?? I been beating my head over this misfire thing!!

@@km6344 to be more comfortable just line up marks before removing old timing belt. Well factory recommended to replace timing belt at 60k or 5 year whichever comes first. Misfiring is on rear of the cylinder 1,3,5 it could jump a cam tooth but I'm not 100%. I would recommend replacing timing belt and water pump at the sametime.

Had a intake vacuum leak this last week after putting my 2.7 Tib back together. The fel pro gasket was upside down. Engine shaking like crazy. So I made a vacuum smoke machine with a cheap soldering gun, pasta jar, rubber tubing, baby oil, and old cotton socks. Found the leak at the plenum. Put a new gasket in. Thing runs like brand new.

@@Lilmiddwest yep bro. The original gasket was flattened overtime. I didn’t notice the Felpro was slightly concave on one side when I reinstalled. Once I found the leak with the kit I made, I pulled the plenum, and it made sense. I thought it was because Amazon sent it bent in a crappy box, but that didn’t make sense in the leak. The leak was out of many parts of the intake seal on the plenum. It was the whole gasket. When I stared at the new Felpro I saw it. The concave side must go facing down into the holes. Once I flipped the new gasket, and put it back together she purred like a brand new engine. Full satisfaction after putting so much time into every detail of my valve cover gaskets, cleaning, painting, hoses, replacing things along the way. I spent 2.5 weeks sanding, polishing, cleaning, torquing every bolt to spec, changing parts, fluids etc only to have a sputtering shaky engine at the end. It was frustrating. Code readers said it was MAFS, oxygen sensors, and other codes. Actually All caused by one gasket upside down. I’m meticulous in my work, so it was a huge sigh of relief when I put her back together, and the engine was so quiet the only two things you could hear were the beautiful ticking of the valves opening and closing, and the cold air intake whistling a Beautiful tune of air into the pipe.

I've done this job, same engine and had the same cam move that one tooth out. I removed the tensioner reset the pin and aligned the timing marks again then installed the tensioner and pulled the pin and the timing marks all stayed lined up. Also FYI the cheap kits from Ebay and Amazon have very weak tensioner and not worth using they are junk! The rest of the kit seems to be adequate just the tensioner is crap.

@Lilmiddwest Gates is the oem maker of Kia timing belt. I ordered all oem Kia timing belt parts and belt says Gates with Kia & Hyundai logos. "Powergrip HTD". Changed timing belt 2018 but only put 14k on it. They say 5 yrs or 60k. Not sure if it needs a new one but nervous to let it go. Opinion?

If your belt break then you will have bent valves. You need have crankshaft in the position. Camshafts can be at right marks or 180 degrees off like I did in the video

Before you turn engine you cut them off just there help stay in place. Left cam should be one tooth to right of the mark before you pull the pin.

I did it but I got this weird problem. My timing is good. NO CEL. When I start the car up it takes like 15 mins to start up. Then when it starts it idles good. No misfires or anything. Nothing wrong. Then if I touch the gas pedal it just dies... Everytime. I changed the fuel pump, the cam sensor, throttle sensor, I changed every sensor you can name. No leaks either

@@Lilmiddwest I figured it out the other night late at night u gotta advance the crank 1 tooth 5 degrees and the rear sprocket turned about 2-5 teeth forward route ur belt crank idler water pump then last rear cam then wrestle the belt over the main tensioner idler pulley and it lines up perfect!

Bought a used engine after mine had a rod knocking after 285K miles. I asked the mechanic to replace the timing belt on the purchased engine. When he started to change the belt the timing marks were not lined up. Off by about 2 inches of the cam gear when the crank was on the mark. The yard where I bought the used engine said that after the engine had been running the marks would not be lined up. My mechanic said that he would not put the used engine in my car because it would not run and would just have to be removed and did not want to charge me to take it back out and put in another one. Can the timing marks be off that far and the engine still run? It was supposed to have come out of a wrecked car and was running at the time of the wreck ( I am told by the owner of the yard I bought it from). My engine with 285K on it still has to timing marks lined up correctly.

Well it can be damaged or off timing. You can just if you have time crank and cams. And see if it rotates and check cylinder leak down test.

Used a lot Patrician oil and work it back and forth. If you do pull the threads then you can put a Helicoil. I replaced water pump when ever I do timing belt.

I used an impact drill with high amps and it knocked it off like a piece of cake. I tried by hand and I couldn't do it (had a wrench near the mount to block).

Yes there 3 timing marks. I'm just showing what if they are not timing right when you get one. We don't live in perfect world. If your engine and you going to do it of course you want to algin before you starting it apart. I have a lot hate because Camshaft are 180° out algin and why engine still running fun and no one says anything about it.

I'm going to have my brother take a look and make sure the timing is good before I take off the old belt. I'mma put the water pump in tomorrow and quite surprised how far I got on my own, I'm literally 50% done. Already have the engine jacked on the oil pan with a 4x4 and 2 jack stands, with the tire and 4x4 as a backup just in case (because im paranoid). My old timing belt had a tiny tear off of it (I found out because I changed the front valve cover gasket) So I want to get in tip top shape. Old spark plugs were DONE. So I'm really excited to see how it runs afterwards. I was told it will be like new and run very good after the timing belt and water pump. I did had to crank the engine little to get the marks to line up (and they were perfect). Tomorrow I'm going to turn in 1 or 2 times to make sure their aligned and have my car mechanic friend check it out before I take off anything.

Did the engine rotate??? Don't matter if it's 180 degree off. Still rotate. I done few engines like that some were 180 off the mark and on the marks what's the difference?

Because a lot oil leaks and weld oil bung for turbo return line. Free music better then nothing

Estou com uma pra montar um cabeçote por conta da gasolina um cabeçote deu problema eu medi a compreensão primeiro cabeçote deu 170 o segundo da frente onde fica o radiador deu 2.3 deu 40 na medição da compreensão 1 deu 100 eu fazendo um cabeçote só o outro está bom posso montar sem problemas porque na medição deu ok sou do Brasil me responde ai meu brother é uma santa fé motor 2.7 também

sorry your portuguese is not translating good to English or Spanish.. you might have to check your piston rings and valves. But i dont really a good answer because i never had that problem yet and fix it .

No you don't I done few timing belts. Chain don't stress out like other engines. Only time I did to regrind my camshafts

I’m pretty sure I bent up all my valves cuz I forgot to time the crankshaft and the cams 😭

These engines are the easiest to replace timing belt kits , but don't use a gates kit as they're garbage
