I noticed you didnt replace the camshaft seals. Would you say if they're not leaking don't mess with them or should they be changed every other timing belt change. I only have 15k on new belt but done almost 6yrs ago with new waterpump. Changed coolant every 2 yrs so no issues there. (82k) Whats your opinion? How did these cams workout? Thx.

I'm on the "if it doesn't leak, why mess with it" side - cams were ok, but it definitely needed a tune and I forgot to check the torque on the cam pully after the first few runs which ended up making me regret that oversight

I see before you took the belt off you said if the marks line up you are at top dead center. So what if you turn that cam pulley and it’s not too dead center on one of the pulleys? How do you put them both to line up ?

Any idea on how much power the cams add, without the supercharger? After tuning ?

In actuality, not a whole lot maybe 10 hp I probably saw about 15 to 20 more with the supercharger. the performance to dollar ratio is pretty bad

didn't they send you cam break-in lube with the new camshafts? It lets the cam lobes break into the tappets and prevents the lobes from going flat due to lack of lubrication on startup.

DOHC Cams don't have the same requirement for break in as those like the old flat tappet cams of an old v8 - The special coating that comes on these cams is enough for break in, but I lubed them up anyways, so they should be good. Many have gotten away with less.

Men i have a werid issue with this motor. Near of the ignition i have a leak when i check i see its not comimg from the head gasket valve cover is under there. And i didnt see anything there i can says ahh this is the issue because there is the block motor and its a tiny oil leak drop.. i dont know if there goes a seal or something. But i only see the hard blocl

It is on here - about a month after installing the new cams, one of the bolts backed out and sheared the pin on the cam grenading the engine - I threw another block in without the supercharger and have been driving it for the last 8 months. Saving the SC for another project or may sell it - haven't decided yet

Hello your videos have me a good bit.. i have a 06 tiburon.. but i have a question.. im no mechanic so please forgive me in advance lol I had the heads reworked & new valves put in .. so what can i do to make sure i dont screw the new valves up when im installing the cams and tightening them down? You just have to make sure they are in sequence. Hopefully the engine was positioned at TDC, then it is easy to eyeball where the cams line up based on the timing marks.

How did you get the left Side stay in place without locking it out. On my car it kept snapping forward. I had to lock it using C Clamp.

There's one little sweet spot where it will stay otherwise it rolls over

Excuse me bro. I have a huge question. After performing this installing on my vehicle. I was able to successfully line up marks and remove the pin for tension, but after when I tried to turn the engine over a couple times to finish my day. I wasn't able to turn the engine over more than a about a quarter of a turn before it locked or hit something. Any idea what it may be I did wrong?

It is possible that you might be off a tooth on the belt. Now that you have tension on it, double check all the timing marks - the front cam likes to rotate forward when you put the belt on

Good idea to do while it's out. Just did my Outlander, nightmare as a few bolts seized for alt, and the serpentine belt tensioner seized..not a fun job, but cheaper than an engine.

Hence the reason I pulled everything - just makes the other aspects so much easier - I wasn't looking forward to installing the cams with the engine in the car, but 8 years after I bought them they're finally in there

I had an aftermarket camshaft for the power increase. There is no need to replace the cam during a timing install.

Can you explain aligning the cams with the chains?.. Guess i should also make the closest to frontof vehicke is left bank correct? I am working on a 2.7 but a kia sportage if that changes anything.I understand the marks on tge crank and aligning with the valvecovers...As far as the cams im lost...besides far passanger back is #1 cylinder... I actually mixed up cam caps as well the aligning the cams info. is what i need yesterday..thanks in advance

Hopefully you kept the cams in the appropriate pairs... Look at the chain for the cams and you should see two miscolored links - they line up with the notches marked on the cam sprocket - I don't think the cap order matters, it was just a precaution I took. Getting the intake cam in the right place is pretty easy, since it is hard to mix up, but there aren't any markings on the exhaust, so you'll have to inspect the events on the lobes to tell the difference. - or you could guess and turn the engine over by hand with a wrench and see if it goes the wrong way like I did. I'll be around the computer a few more times today, so if you have any follow up questions, I can help where I can

Thank you for your quick response as that means so much... You should also include those steps in your next cam swap install..yes ive mixed them up but they have letters and numbers starting with L& R so they gotta be left and right bank !! But i understand the dark links and the lines on gear should and do line up with eachother but WHERE SHOULD THEY BE POSITIONED?..Facing Away from eachother? ..level with top of head on each side? Heres my rant ..But this kia has been a nightmare and your only one ive found installing cams and I thought alot would bemd valves and need this info?..Maybe shop has it done for them... This was by far the biggest repair ive attempted and let me tell ya its been my direct cause of anger....Ive done so many things wrong and I should make a video what not to do bit seriously embarrassing but it started with not labeling all the bolts.( which alone can be anyones downfall as so many that are so close but only work for that spot ).I.e. Side cover and waterpump..... Loosing few head bolt washers and new kit didnt provide..pinched throttle or speedo line and not seeing until heads were torqued lol..actually not funny pulling heads and buying new gaskets but yup...how about struggling with back exhaust manifold and cracking / breaking it which is also a cat ... Overtightning cam caps and breaking bolts..plural..1/4 inch drive from now on.lol well fixed and learned from all that..Hopefully i didnt bend valves as obvisiouly didnt assemble correctly and i was turning by hand but would stop..I like to think i was semi gentle and cautious..except when pulley needed to come back off and when i actually asked for help as thought cam gears were secure when trying to manually pulling pulley off (claimed he was mechanic for years this older man is only reason I trusted anything that could jeopardize this ongoing nightmare ). Guess well see and buy a impact if this is needed again so learning the hard way as please use these examples if you like in your next videos..Never claimed to be a mechanic..Just the position of those cam links n gears and I will forever be greatful .

A flathead screwdriver will do it. If you have some cash, you can get a seal removal tool. Its a sharp tool that looks like a medieval torture device. Runs about $15.

Are the exhaust cams in each head the same?

Each cam is different - you wouldn't want to put the right cam in the left head - the timing would be 180 degrees out

Yeah I found that out lol. I accidentally swapped the two exhaust cams. They are actually the same just clocked differently. Running good now. Glad I didn’t bend valves. Brand new heads

There's a guy on youtube who got a plain label timing belt tensioner. It lasted around 3000ish miles or so before he started hearing a ticking noise. It was THE TIMING BELT FLAPPING because the tensioner had FAILED. He replaced it at 4000 miles. FULLY EXPECT that plain label stuff to be literally made in peoples garages.... korea is a strange mix of serious wealth with asian poverty you'd expect in a poor asian country. Corruption?? They had a shopping center collapse in the early 90s. Investigations started. They uncovered that 95% of multi storey buildings had been built incorrectly with underhanded methods often bribing city planners and building inspectors. Only 1 in 20 were built with no bribes or corruption. They ALSO found that only 2%, that's 1 IN 50 where built to the correct standards with no shortcuts..... so how are these no label aftermarket parts and ebay crap for hyundais going to be..... the only piece of advice I saw from an HONEST hyundai technician about hyundais, was always get genuine hyundai parts. And I assume that would include well trusted brands you also know of. I wouldn't be surprised if ebay oil filters for these are just hollow bean tins with a nut soldered on....

The gates timing kits are absolute garbage . The only part in this kit that's american made is the belt . Everything else is cheaply built chinese crap
