Phil Harrison you’ve completely missed the point. Someone like lily Allen with all her privileges cannot begin to understand what it’s like to live a normal life where immigration effects you. For the normal average person, a population increase of 300,000 a year is felt with enormous impact on every single area of your life. From struggling to find a home, a job, a place in a school for your child or even an appointment for your disabled child. For lily Allen, she will never be in the position where she is homeless because there aren’t enough homes, she will never struggle to find a private school place for her daughters and ultimately she probably sees a private doctor, so no matter what happens her children will always get seen by one. She can campaign for migrants and tell us all we should accept them with open arms because it doesn’t effect HER. Bottom line is she cannot be a spokesperson for british society because she doesn’t represent normal life as she’s never had a normal life.

OK. I feel like you've missed the point too. I could point out that immigration is consistently and by all measures shown to be a net economic benefit to our society. Or that in lots of cases (the NHS is a good example), immigrants offer skills that in the short term, we have no way of doing without (yes, we can retrain people but that will take *a long time*). Or that the NHS crisis and the housing crisis is *nothing* to do with immigration and everything to do with government underfunding and an ageing population (in the case of the former) and a simple failure to build and maintain enough social housing (in the case of the latter). But actually, my original comment wasn't really about the individual issues. It was about our basic democratic principles and the plurality of our society. And that's where you've missed the point. What makes 'a normal, average person'? Who gets to decide who can comment on things? Many of the commentators and politicians who have driven our anxieties about immigration have knowingly and cynically exploited misapprehensions over matters like this to political ends. Most of them don't meet the criteria you specify either. Once again, I'd ask; who is allowed to comment? Give me the names of some commentators and politicians who qualify please. For my money, *everyone* has a right to comment. Why wouldn't that be the case? And once again, who gets to decide?
