Something overlooked in the movie: neither of Rapunzel's parents have a line, but their facial expressions show everything, especially before the floating lantern lighting. This is the 18th year they've done the lantern lighting. It's difficult for them to do this because, in all likelihood, their daughter is dead, gone forever. Yet, they cling together to some small foolish hope that she sees the lanterns and comes home.

That day just happened to also be her birthday, but if it wasn't she could still want to go see what these mysterious lights were about. I will defend this movie until Disney buys a clone factory and grows a Rapunzel so I can hang out with her for a day.

Damn. I've only seen this once and it was a while ago. I'd forgotten that "sound of complete and utter betrayal" line. That's what she has over Lady Tremain. If Tremain tried that on Cinderella, it wouldn't sting because Tremain never bothered tricking Cinderella into THINKING there was genuine care. Gothel's closest counterpart is Frollo (note that both Rapunzel and Quasimodo give a "You told me to fear the outside world, but you're the one I should be afraid of"-esque speech), but I think her manipulation stills outpace even his. Frollo eventually had to resort to following Quasimodo to the hideout. Gothel was so close to having Rapunzel back in her grip, had it not been for Rapunzel's deeply-buried memories. Great villain. Just wish her design wasn't so unfortunate.

Tangled is one of those movies that I love just for what I'm actually seeing on screen and not any of the hype built up around that, whether it be positive or negative hype. I've seen both, and both can be pretty laughable at times with people looking for any reason to die on a hill about a movie, which is why I hated the Tangled vs Frozen debate so much. Because I was just sitting there the whole time wondering why there even had to be a debate, especially since I like both movies a lot. But ngl, Eugene is still one of the best Disney characters to date.

The day she turns 18 is the day of the lanterns, which is roughly a two days after Rapunzel met Eugene. The whole thing with the lanterns is specifically said to be done on her birthday, which is the whole reason the story happens. She even says to Max that it’s her birthday, the day of the lanterns. Rapunzel was still seventeen for a solid portion of the film. It’s only when they finally reach the kingdom that she’s 18.
