My biggest issue with Snape is that he is an incredibly vile person. He calls his best friend a racial slur when she pushes him away for being a death eater. Then he tells her that she is the exception. He also threatened to kill Nevilles pet and punishes him for not letting that happen. He bullies Neville to the point where a child, one who's parents were tortured into insanity by death eaters, sees Snape as the thing he fears most. Not his family dead (like Mrs weasley), not the death eaters, not voldy or dementors or any of the many terrifying things he has seen. Nope. It's his teacher that he fears the most.

I think that there's is a lack of general understanding permiating through the Gryffindor Trios friendship where, despite being friends for years they still showcase that they misunderstand each other even when it's completely nonsensical. A better version of Philosopher's Stone would be about these three kids who come from very different backgrounds to learn to cooperate and understand each other which would then serve as a base for their future friendship. With disagreements only coming because of circumstantial plot stuff and always noticing when one of them is going through stuff from then on. I still don't like the fact that Harry and Ron never seem to realize that Hermione could face being excluded from the wizarding world entirely if she were to screw up solely because of her background.

Also, there’s this thing about Hermione and almost every single woman/girl in Chamber of Secrets is infatuated by Lockhart and keep making excuses for his clear and utter incompetence as a teacher, with Harry and Ron being the only ones who openly criticize him and Hermione being upset when they do. In most cases Hermione is able to see through BS and uses facts and logic to poke holes in stories and theories that don’t make sense, generally being called insensitive, rude, mean or boring when she does. But with Lockhart she somehow doesn’t? Because Hermione is suddenly superficial and obsessed with looks and keeps making excuses for him when he can’t do anything right. Also, I remember that when we are introduced to Fleur De La Cour, Hermione is immediately antagonistic and jealous when the boys say they think she’s pretty and tries to say anything to bring her down in their eyes. And when Bill later gets engaged with Fleur- Mrs Weasley, Ginny and Hermione are still acting antagonistic towards her, with Mrs Weasley going so far as to say they are moving too fast while making excuses for getting married to her husband very quickly by saying that “it was meant to be”. And the real only reason we’re given for why the girls don’t like Fleur is because she’s rude and snobbish, but given how Rowling writes women I generally believe that this how she believes beautiful women act. Stuck-up, snobbish and rude creatures who think the world of themselves and need to be humbled (by a man btw). And that also makes it okay for every other woman to not like them and act like they have hurt them personally somehow.

@@auditect950 Yeah, the more I look at how she writes women and girls a lot just comes across as internalized misogyny which feels very uncomfortable. A while ago I thought it was kinda neat how Hermione is the most competent person out of the main characters (including Harry) but now it just comes across as Hermione taking it upon herself to look after the boys so they don’t kill themselves or get expelled. Also, how so many girls are written emotional and being given very little support or understanding from the people around them. Like Cho being upset after Cedric being killed and being an emotional mess. It could have a set up for sort of relationship or even just friendship between her and Harry as he maybe comforts her, helps her and all that and over the story they grow closer and she’s able to let go of Cedric. But instead Harry just looks like a sick but Rowling just writes as her being too emotional and needing to get over it already. So, to sum up, women are emotional, superficial, nagging, bossy, boring and rule abiding (read: not letting boys have any fun), jealous and just need to settle down and have a family already because that what they’re role in life is. And depending on whether they are ugly or beautiful, they’re likely going to be horrible people who need to be taught a lesson. … yeah

oh dear, that part about snape and teachers being bullies... hits too close to home. my dad was horribly abused by a teacher and still holds it. i went to the same school as my parents did and during an end of the year ceremony he didnt clap when that bully walked on stage (shes still there but mostly as an authority figure and not a teacher for better and for worse). thats a tiny example, but its fucking deep in there and he never talks about any of this, the only time i got info about the details of the abuse (i wont share for privacy but you can imagine) was from my mom as they were in the same class. ive interacted with the bully a few times and i see her as a monster. it probably goes both ways as i have my dads last name and the same facial features, i have no doubt she sees him in me and im just glad i never had any real classes with her going back to snape, to see what is otherwise meant to be a morally good character do something like that... no. it makes me shiver from fear and anger. no child or adult or anyone deserves to be treated like that and acting like its just normal is so, so wrong. while i dont know that much about harry potter as i wasnt ever that into it, i did absorb it via osmosis and those little bits and pieces i picked up about snape have always been so cruel to me, especially now that im older and understand it more. all of this is just more proof that rowling LOOOOVES to keep things exactly the same, but that one example in particular is just too much for me. anyways fuck bullies

Another female character that was bound to be wife and mother is Nymphadora Tonks. She's such interesting idea of character, being metamorph! Come on, when I watched movies and saw her first time I wanted to learn more about her. And then she's just Lupin's wife. Some book fans told me that there is story about her. This story is about her love for old, depressed and kinda pathetic guy who wants to leave her because of his problems. Which causes Nymphadora being depressed too. This is spot on! I remembered reading someone's Facebook post talking about how rewatching the movies made them realized that Snape, for some reason, had always loved and cared for Harry DESPITE that he is shown BLATANTLY making his life and other children that’s NOT in the Slytherin house a living hell! Followed by others commenting how they agreed to this with crying and heart emails next to their comments( Big Yikes). When I opposed this and providing evidence that says otherwise, they just brushed it off and saying they disagree. Like its ok to like an antagonist or villain if their interesting but the defense or justification of clear abuse and inhumane actions is scary to me. Also Jane Elliot is right on the nose and the funny thing is the Birth Dearth suspiciously is nowhere to be found online or if it was, it cost an arm and leg to get the last I remembered.

When I was a kid I loved Ron, but looking back now I think that was a combination of not reading the last couple of books, misremembering the first ones, and ignoring his actual character traits in order to see him as a loyal, funny, down to earth kid who butted heads with Hermione but respected and cared about her for who she was. I think one reason why snape is rotting so badly in and out the fandom unlike other characters that did terrible things is that he never really gets shit for his treatment of children. Take sirius for example, he does something that is ( because of the even larger power difference) Worse than abusing students, sirius abuses his slave yet inside the narrative thats the main reason he gets murdered, the text explicitly punishes him for it so maybe ot makes it easier for the reader to overlook it or at least not be as uncomfortable with him. With snape, he never improves nor he repents for this specific thing, hell, none of the teachers seem to even dislike him~ for it, no wonder he was never even coerced into changing his awful behavior, because no adult said shit abt it (all the complains were about him being a DE, not a douchebag). He redeems himself only in parts, he dies not as a good or kinder person, while still being very heroic and thats not very satisfactory for most readers, I suppouse.

Videos like these are some of my favorites because I love being schooled about subjects that I had/have a vague idea about but could never really figure out how to put into words. It either helps me have a more concrete idea about something I was starting to pick up on and didn't quite understand before or just teaches me entirely new things. I think some of Rowling's disturbing views on child abuse can be seen when examining Dudley Dursley. Harry and Dudley don't like each other, because Vernon and Petunia spoil Dudley and bully Harry, encouraging their son to do the same, and the narrative does correctly portray this as bad. However, when someone who Rowling does want to portray as likable shows up, their response is usually to turn the tables, being nice to Harry and cruel to Dudley, and it's framed as Dudley deserving it. When Hagrid shows up, he physically disfigures Dudley, who is at the time an eleven year old child. A mean one, yes, but still a child who can't do anything to defend himself against a literal half-giant who can use magic. Maybe the pig's tail would have been more acceptable had it just been there for a second to scare him, and then poofed into nothingness, but it was permanent and it was even said that they had to surgically remove it. In one of the later books, Fred and George hide a jynxed candy for him to find, once again using magic to disfigure someone who can't do anything to retaliate. In both of these cases, it's framed as Dudley, who I remind you is literally a child in both of these instances, deserving it, not because of his meanness, but because of his weight. You can tell who is good and bad by which child they like and which one they abuse, not the fact they are abusing a child in the first place. I don't remember a single Harry Potter character actually wanting for Harry and Dudley to get along.

Her hatred for women and cliche writing got explained instantly. Why in the first 3 Minutes? I'm only about halfway through, but your points reiterate my thoughts from last time: A lot of the nostalgia for the franchise doesn't actually come from the books, they come from the movies which do an excellent job of cutting the waffling that infests every corner of JK's writing and they go out of their way to sand down the edges of her *mean spirited* descriptions and events. When I think of the movie adaptations, my feelings are (mostly) positive, though there was little that could be done to salvage the 7th book. But when I actually look in the books? I'm struck by how mean spirited every fucking line is, nevermind the poor writing and pacing. Some friends and I were talking about the "true to Rowling's vision" TV serial of Harry Potter, and the jokes eventually devolved into "I can't wait for a full episode where Harry and Ron are weirdly racist to a side character for 48 minutes and nothing else happens." I'm looking forward to the serial, if only because it will put a couple more nails in the coffin of this series by forcing everyone to admit how mean it really is.

Another thing about Rowling's hateful ideology: The only people without magic that we see, aside from Hermione's parents, are all abusive and spiteful to those who have magic. The Dursleys are the first that we meet, and their defining characteristic is that they're bad people. Mcgonagall, one of the people you're supposed to trust as an authority on the world, said the Dursleys "wouldn't understand him" and that they're the "worst sort of muggles imaginable". The Dursleys aren't characters, they're caricatures, the only one who manages to dip a toe into the kiddy pool of character development being Dudley who learns "oh, hey, maybe being a piece of shit to my family is bad" Then there's Filch. Filch is the only squib we meet in the series (for anyone not in the know, a squib is a person born to two magical parents but doesn't have any magic). His main character trait is that he is cruel. His most well known quote is him mourning the fact he can't torture children. Rowling's portrayal of disability and mental illness is far from good, to put it politely.

It's always fun to watch a new Lily Orchard video, but the fact this came out on my birthday made it super special. Thanks for the birthday present, Lily. :) On a separate note, everything you've laid bare in the previous video about how JoJo can't keep her mouth shut gave me the final push I needed to part with my Harry Potter memorabilia. I dropped off the fandom around the time the last book came out, and I've never felt inclined to come back since everyone and their grandmothers were working themselves up about spoilers and how kids might need to have counseling due to all the death. Back then, I was an ignorant high school sophomore, and even I felt: "Okay, I'm not having fun anymore. As someone essentially forced to read the first Harry Potter book in highschool for lack of better literature, I was surprised by how good some of the ideas in it were. Snape as a character has inspired one of my own. That series is not wholly rotten and sinister. There are good ideas when you get down into it. But that's one of the problems. You have to dig down and peel off all the layers of garbage to get there. Shoutout to people who are genuinely committed to rewriting the series, because that sounds genuinely hellish.

So this is a me thing, but I’ve had to rewatch this for two reasons. One is that Lily/Mikaila (I don’t know whose voice is who’s yet, I stumbled upon this video recently) has a passionate punch with each word, and I’ve been left cackling to myself at some of the quips-“back in the pantry” being the one that caught me the most off guard. 15:04 Urdnot Wrex? Really? I never got the impression he was _meant_ to be morally grey. His whole character is based around wanting what's best for his species. He's not even all that 'toxic' of a character either. He's a man who's seen his people dragged through the mud and shattered for his entired centuries long life. He's jaded and he's got grudges. Wrex also never actually does anything 'evil' any more so than the rest of the Normandy Crew. The only times he ever actually turns on you are on Virmire when you have to destroy a cure for the bio-weapon that's plagued his people for over a millennia in order to stop Saren (at which point you can still talk him down), or in the third game when you already betrayed his trust and sabotaged the second attempt at a cure. In either instance he's rightly fucking pissed with you, and you aren't giving him any reason not to be.

However it is _slightly_ undermined by the influence system in ME1 which could lead to instances like (hilariously enough) Garrus telling you to kill the Rachni Queen and Wrex telling you to spare her. So you _could_ break him out of that role through your own actions In the first game, though unless you knew about the influence system and were actively trying, it wasn't likely to happen. Your point still stands though and I will concede that he's not quite as well developed in the first game.

I think what annoys me most is that it's my dream to be an author but I feel like it's impossible for my kinds of ideas to get published because it feels like an impossible market to break into dominated by nostalgia for book series like this that aren't even that good. Not to say every nostalgic series currently is bad but there are a number that just aren't as enjoyable when you kinda realize the messages in them. It's even more sad cause me and probably other aspiring authors put effort into detail to make sure no weird and gross messages are coming across in writing.
