Lima Class 101 DMU: Donation Overhaul

Martin who sent me the Bachmann 158 and the Lima Eurosprinter to repair recently has very generously donated this hardly used, boxed Lima Class 101 DMU in Scotrail livery.
I've been after a Scotrail DMU for ages and Martin said he didn't run this anymore so would I like to have it as a thank you for repairing his locos.

Hi Bill, I do enjoy the nice touch of running into the shed to be repaired and coming out again after the work is done. The four keen lads on the fence moving about also adds a nice touch of realism.

Well I must say that Martin’s donation of that Lima 101 was absolutely awesome 👏🏻 You deserve it as your channel is so helpful to so many model train enthusiasts 😀 When you think how much new models cost now and the cost of living crisis it’s a real shame that the likes of Lima went bust as they are a great alternative to the perfection that the likes of Bachmann are trying to achieve at a massive cost 🤔 With some cheap modifications and good servicing the results are fantastic as you demonstrated on your channel. Brilliant donation bill, and we know its gone to a good home, really like the touch of the workmen all lined up the watch the locomotives first run, you do the same when the come out of the shed. Great video, nice to see an old Lima model getting some love. The majority of my diesels are Lima. Great idea using guitar string for extra pick ups! Lima always run reliably if kept clean and extra weight usually helps in most of their models

Always liked the Metro-Cammell dmus (BR Class 101) - and you have got a good one there, Bill. I would be tempted to remove the outer couplings on each car to improve how it looks. Probably worthwhile investing in Hunt’s magnetic couplings - they seem to be quite a popular modification. As do Kadee’s, but they are a bit more involved. Chadwick Model Railway did a good video on the differences of the Kadee types which might be worth a look. Best wishes from down here in Merseyside!

Hi Bill, great video as usual - very interesting to see how the extra pick-up was done. I have two Lima 'Westerns' and have pondered long and hard how to add an extra coupling and now the problem is solved by watching your video - am going to get the drill out now!!! Many thanks.

That is a great fix, one other thing I would do re the couplings, is get rid of the front couplings, as I would never use them. Oh and perhaps add some figuers inside. And if pos a driver. Wonder if working head and tail lights could be fitted? Just wondering do you stillplay your guitar(s) ?

You’re right about eBay. With manufactures raising prices ups the 2nd market prices. There are bargains out there but it it’s getting difficult. Great video again enjoy your DMU.

Feel free to make your own mind up, but I can recommend the magnetic couplers from Westhill Wagon Works. I'm slowly but surely (to spread the cost) converting all my rolling stock over to them as I hate tension locks. I did invest in some 3D printed NEM pockets, as all my rolling stock is second hand and ancient, but it's just as easy to glue the couplers onto the bogies, having worked out the height and reach required. If, I suspect, you're never going to sell on your DMUs, you can suit yourself. Cheers

Hi Bill, very enjoyable, especially as I have a good number of old Lima locos still hard at work on my layout! Much better models than many give them credit for. Agree the extra pick up is essential and have been using some ready mades from Gaugemaster but on a couple of locos are too deep so your ”guitar string” method is going to get a try. Which string are you using? Looks like it could be a G/third?

I usually use a B/2nd usually from acoustic or electric. But any plain string can be used.

What track is your used on the layout is it code 100 or code 75 because Lima wheels don't like finescale track

A mixture of Hornby and Peco Code 100. All my points, crossings and curves are Hornby but a lot of the straights are Peco flexible.
