The second instalment of how to improve an old Lima DMU. It covers buffer beam pipework and screw couplings, adding extra pickups, interior and exterior detailing and of course weathering.

Thanks Stevie.....for my current project I have simply cut some buffers from thin plastic using a domestic hole punch. Once painted, at normal viewing distances they don't look too bad, Keith

The final result is definitely worth it, very impressive modelling! You have an excellent channel too. Regarding the windscreen wipers and perhaps some more details, I know that you can buy Dapol class 121 spares from DCC Supplies for not too much money (I think for about £4 for a pack of 2 wipers if memory serves). There are a good selection other parts available to buy too, which I’ve always found handy in the past for various modelling projects! I know what you mean about the cost of all the extras but in this case the only purchased items were the windows...the rest came out of my stock box. I notice that current Bachmann 2 car DMUs sell for North of £200 so I am well pleased with my efforts, Keith

The tiny Lima buffers can be pulled out and replaced with Oleo buffers from Peters Spares. They make a world of difference.

Most of mine were fixed solidly to the buffer beams so I left them as they were to minimise damage when removing them. Since then and being a bit of a bodger I have found that a hole punch and thin plastic makes excellent replacements. I simply glue them over the originals.

I've always added pickups to wheels with traction tyres as well. You'd be surprised how much flange contact can improve reliability too.

Interesting....although because of poor soldering skills I have always shied away from adding wires to motor bogies. I might give it a try in future though, Keith

@@KV12543 rather than thick wire that you used, just use enamel wire, perhaps off an old speaker or transformer. Solder it to the surface of the pick up first, then superglue in place with activator if necessary. I cut and form the whole pick up from a single piece of beryllium copper, although as you said phosphur bronze holds its.shape too. It's so neat it barely needs painting in

Once you could get these drawing pins which were almost the correct size for the large round buffers printed they looked great and cheap
