Thank you for taking the time to go to this lima site 85 and sharing your clips. See, I was born at the foot of this mountain, on the north side. The steps are on the south side. CIA lost it to Pathet Lao in 1968. The local people who sided with the CIA had to flee as a result of the fight. Hundreds if not thousands of people who fled from this place have now lived in America. I have been in the States for 37 years and returned to visit this site a month ago. It sure was a historical place.

Well thank you for sharing your experience, this mountain is not just beautiful but very sacred in my opinion. I have been there twice now and likely return again has the view is quite spectacular. Thanks for watching and Laos is a beautiful country.

Thank you for the video. My great uncle was one of the men stationed there when it was overran. To this day, he is still classified as MIA.

Sure that's from a helo and not one of the An2 Colts that went down or the A1E Skyraider that went down there in 1968? It wasn't just the Pathet Lao that attacked the site. PAVN/NVA was very much involved with the majority of the forces coming from PAVN/NVA creating a roughly 3000 man strong assault force. Sappers and commandos scaled the cliff walls do disarm antipersonnel mines and quick fuse grenades under the cover of an artillery strike used as a diversionary tactic. The PAVN/NVA commander on the ground's after action report is readily available if there are questions regarding the involvement of the PAVN/NVA.

@@Marauder-xy5sg thanks for the info, I was back there last November and there were members of the American army still looking for bones for the MIA. It's a very special place for me, and I plan to return again in the future.

Question, how difficult is it to travel in Vietnam from Laos with a motorcycle registered in Thailand? I want to go to Dien Bien Phu. @@mikefreeriderAsia
@mikefreeriderAsia
@mikefreeriderAsia Жыл бұрын
@@georgemcmillan3360 you cannot cross into Vietnam on a Thai registered motorcycle from Laos. You will need the use of an Agency, and legally the agency must be traveling with you , so if you are riding solo it's very expensive. I have taken three major trips to Vietnam from Thailand but always in groups of eight plus Riders, max 12 . The other option is just to go there and rent then you're free to ride anywhere. Doesn't make a lot of sense but those are the rules

@@mikefreeriderAsia okay, I met a group of Thai riders that went to Vietnam through Laos but the operative word is “group.” They must have chipped in and hired a guide.

@@mikefreeriderAsia On second thought.. it was not failed intelligence, the unit on the Hill was disposable, Americans knew this was going to happen, but the flightcrews over Vietnam were more important.. Other unethical (?) high risk missions during the War include most of MACV-SOG operations.

@@andersfant4997 Correct! Richard Secord was a commanding officer with a lot of knowledge and experience in Laos. He requested more defense forces for Lima Site 85 including Green Berets but was denied by the US Ambassador for Laos who was running the operations. He didn't even want any weapons at the site. Secord was insubordinate and got the site a few light weapons, mostly M-16's, some grenades, and pistols. They needed a lot more.

@@SpeedyBlueBiker1 Terrible sitiation for the men on the Hill, they knew that an attempt was inevitable.. Not that diffetent from the many Firebases in Vietnam, Kate was one of them, remembered for the heroic action of Captain Albracht.
