Yes! You can definitely mix colors to add dimension/create the exact color you’re looking for. The best way to do this is to apply a full coat of one color, then go over it with a second color- instead of mixing two limewashes together

I’m curious to know how the Romabio (with regular acrylic primer) has held up vs. the Bauwerk, and besides the greater color choices available from Bauwerk did you see any other notable differences between the two companies?

They both worked great! For end results, not a huge notable difference. But Bauwerk definitely makes it easier to get the process going since it comes all ready to go. Hope that helps and sorry I missed your comment!

This video is awesome and your content is SO helpful!! My husband and I bought an old log cabin and are restoring it for our forever home. We are adding some interior walls that will be drywall, so I am wanting to limewash those, but I'm also thinking of limewashing the ceilings in white to brighten it (low ceilings). I am thinking of brushing it along the wood grain, but wondering if I'm overthinking this? I'm guessing it will be quite alot cheaper to just whitewash it with diluted white ceiling paint. What are your thoughts? My motivation is to get a more luminescent finish. Can you also speak to how durable it is? It sounds like the lime primer makes it stick better but I've run across that criticism, that it can just be wiped off with water. I have kids, so would love to know this too. Last question: does the environment need to be within a certain temperature when you apply it? We don't have heat yet and it drops below freezing at night still. Should I wait? So curious to test it on a stretch of ceiling to see if its a good choice but don't want to jump the gun if that will mess it up. Thank you so much!!!

I suppose you painted it already, but I would have suggested actual slaked lime whitewash, as long as your ceilings are exposed untreated wood.

I haven’t heard of that method, and I imagine it wouldn’t work as well as you’d hope. I’d say either buy a mineral primer or go for regular acrylic. Hope that helps!

Hi Josh, thank you for this information. I have a couple of questions... I am hoping to put lime wash over very old and fragile adobe (that had been limewashed about a hundred years ago. The original has spalled. I want to protect the rest of the walls). Do I need to put the acrylic base on since the original is porous? Do I need to keep the original wall dampened to acceptnthe activity of the brush strokes? Also what temperature range is the best for application? Should I wait until all danger of frost is past? I found your channel while researching painting techniques for hombre as well as"marbling", and I have absolutely fallen in love with the use of limewash - I'd never even heard of limewash before finding your channed. I was a little hesitant about the finish being "textured", until you explained that it's a visual texture, which completely abated my hesitation - so, of course I had to sub your channel. I hate textured walls, and absolutely cannot abide textured ceilings! I'm now in the process of repurposing a FEMA trailer, turning it into a "she shed". I am currently In the "Seek and Destroy" phase of the repurposing process, so I'm not ready for painting as of yet. Since I have absolutely no idea who lived in it, I plan on applying at least one coat of Kilz on the walls - especially in the bathroom (😩 ugh!). Will I need to go over the Kilz with another primer prior to applying the limewash? I apologize for the epistle, but I wasn't very sure about the direction I should go, especially since the"living room" and kitchen areas are not separate rooms, but now I'm really excited about the prospects you've opened up for me - thank you so much for that!!!!! I was also wondering if you could give me any advice at all about doing a marbled or hombre type of paint scheme?

So glad to share the knowledge! To be in the safe side I would use a lime primer after the Kilz. As far as scheme, I think something like marble or limewash is much more timeless and less trendy than hombre. So I’d go in that direction if it were me. Hope that helps!

I got to thinking about the whole hombre vs. marbling scheme, and I holeheartedly agree that marbling would be the way to go - you could add so much more depth with marbling, and I can just about envision how my little shed will look, as well as the "feel", or vibe it would give off - if that makes any sense at all. This is my very first attempt at anything like this, and I was beginning to think that I may be biting off a little more than I could chew, and you've made it so much less frightening - thank you for that!! I plan to do a bit of "binge watching" your channel - you're so talented and creative - without being "out there".

When I was in construction I always heard Kilz made things worse. I accidentally discovered apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle kills black wall mold. Once you've soaked a surface with ACV, scrub it, rinse with a damp sponge, then mist it with a light spray of ACV and wait two hours. Sponge or rinse, and if necessary apply a solution of bleach water 1:4, wait ten minutes, rinse, and dry for several hours. Primer and paint or limewash.

Lime putty alone doesn’t have enough adhesion properties for interiors on dry wall you should be adding casein or an acrylic binder. Great video over all

I didn’t consider or know about lime wash until just now and it’s gorgeous! My bathroom is white wall tiled halfway ( except shower recess is fully tiled) and pale grey tile floors, like in the kitchen the walls aren’t smooth (cement) and I’m thinking this would hide the walls and give it much needed earthiness and texture. Would you paint the ceiling in lime ( use sealant?) but use even strokes so the colour and feel remains but contrasts with the walls? I’m in Australia 🇦🇺 love your channel 👏🏼

Thanks so much! Yeah this could definitely be a good option for you. I would take the limewash all the wall up to the ceiling, as you said. People are often to afraid to paint ceilings a color other than white, but I think it’ll make a beautiful, unique feature in your space. Good luck with your project! @@joshmrivera Fortunately Bauwerk has a shop here in Perth so I’m going to get some samples, I’ll tell them Josh sent me! The neutral colours and whites are what I’m looking at they remind me of stone/rustic houses in Greece I loved so much. Bauwerk colours were used in the exterior of St Mary’s Cathedral here and having a brick exterior patio painted in the stone colours is very tempting! I’m hooked thank you so much 😊

That’s never happened to me. Only advice would be to seal the wall when you’re done if you keep having that problem. Hope that helps!

Sounds like an exciting project! Honestly, there is no right or wrong answer. It all depends on the aesthetic you are going for. Just remember if you end up deciding to apply it to the molding as well, that you still have to do the same preparation as far as priming it.

I would say probably not. The lime has to sort of stick to itself with each coat to create the layers. And how the like is brushed on leaves you with that texture. I can’t say for certain as I’ve never tried or read about it, but I’d imagine it would not be successful. You may just created paint with what looks like sediment in it 😓

I’ve never seen it done, but supposedly it can be used on wood. I wouldn’t recommend it though. Cabinets are such high touch surfaces and prone to dirt and oil. The limewash will soak all of that up. Personally I’d stick to using it on walls haha

Thanks! You don’t need to buy from them but to get the classic limewash texture you’ll need to buy a soft bristled block brush. Hope that helps! Got my first at Home Depot

You can get limewash in a ton of colors. You can order through Bauwerk or another retailer like JH Paints. Don’t be scared to try it, it’s so doable!

Ideally each wall would be done in one go, connecting the “clouds” you make as you paint, but technically you can do it in more than one go. Especially if you’re going to add at least 3 coats. I would make sure to start in a different area with each coat to make sure you get the textured finish you want. Hope that helps!

I definitely don’t think it would be overkill if you did this throughout your home, but it would definitely take a lot of elbow grease! Haha since you can’t use a roller for this. But if instead you wanted to do it to one wall as an accent wall, that could work too. But in my opinion I would look best to do a full room. You can definitely be creative with this though; I did this in a nook in my living room and the rest of the space had regular paint in the walls

Hi, Josh! Thank you for your videos: I'm now a subscriber. We've recently moved into an old house that is at least 75-80 years old. There is an old, very thick paint on the drywall throughout the house with peeling, cracking and chipping in many places. I want to limewash throughout the house. Just how much of this old paint would you recommend I get off the walls first? I'm having to fix nail holes and cracks from settling of the house, too. How do you think limewash will behave applied over the putty I'm using? And one more question, sir: how is the coverage of tinted limewash over existing colors of paint? The entire house...I mean, everything that could be reached with a paintbrush! 🤦‍♀️ ...is yellow. ...walls, window sills, wooden windows, trim, baseboards........ HalleluYah, the previous owners didn't paint the hardwood floors! 🙌 The cabinets were a nightmare to strip! ...3-4 coats of that old, thick paint! ...the top being...yellow. Thank you for your time! I'm very much looking forward to using tinted limewash to breathe new life, figuratively and literally, into this old house! By the way, we're planning on using limewash on the outside, too!

Sounds like an amazing (and tough) project! I’m glad you found this video and I hope you watch part 2 to make sure you have all the info I can give. As far as your specific scenario, I’m not sure I can be that helpful. I don’t have much renovation experience so I’m not totally sure. I’d say if you’re stripping paint from the walls I would strip as much as possible. Then I would patch up the walls/fill holes. Then I would do 2-3 coats of a lime or mineral primer. That itself is white so will help with covering up the color underneath. Then finally you can go in with limewash. Wish I could help more, but good luck !

Hey, I’m not sure if I understand your question. But if your walls are painted with any type of regular paint you definitely should apply a lime or mineral primer first before you begin

I would ask your local hardware store for some help. It’s really hard to say because there are countless types of paint out there and they really vary so much. Wish I could be more helpful, but good luck !

Nope, it won’t matter. Most walls already have paint on them, so you just have to prep your walls properly

Hmm that sounds odd to me, that Home Depot wouldn’t ship it within the US? I’m sorry you’re having trouble finding it. You can try JH paints, Bauwerk, or just Google Limewash and you’ll be able to find it somewhere I’m sure

Hey, sorry if there’s a miscommunication here. So Home Depot only sells Romabio limewash as far as I know. I meant if you don’t see the selection you want from Romabio on Home Depot’s website, you can try a different company’s website. Bauwerk and JH paints are their own companies that sell their own limewash. Hope that helps!

Concrete is porous so you shouldn’t need to prime 👍🏼

I think that would take a very skilled painter haha Regular paint isn’t going to cut it. But there are other alternatives like French wash, micro concrete/concrete, and others. If you’re looking for a different way to add texture I’d just Google it and see what your options are. Hope that helps!

Typically limewash doesn’t leave a residue. That is assuming it was applied correctly, with good wall preparation. Are you having trouble with residue or are you anticipating there will be issues with residue?

About how long do you wait between each coat?

Minimum 2 hours! But if you aren’t in a rush definitely leave your first or second coat on for a full day before finishing it off. I love giving it some extra time to cure and breathe. If you’re starting after 2 hours and you start seeing you’re actually removing some of the prior layer, you may have to give it more time. I think weather/humidity effects dry time just like with regular paint. Hope that helps!

Can a lime wash paint be applied to outdoor planters, plastic or metal?

You should be able apply it to wood or stone, as they are typically porous and can absorb/hold onto it. But for metal or plastic I’d say probably not. You can attempt and let me know how it turns out?? Hahah If I were going to try I would sand, then apply multiple coats lime primer, then multiple coats of limewash, and probably add some sort of topcoat to maintain it. But truthfully I have no idea 🤷🏻‍♂️

Which is better? Totally depends on your goal for the space (and budget). Personally I’d probably opt for limewash/plaster over wallpaper in my spaces

I feel like that’s a hard question to answer. If you want more depth in your color/texture you can choose a base color limewash and a top color. I’ve seen many successful applications where a darker limewash was used first, and then a lighter color painted on top. Another way to add interest could be to choose certain areas to do extra coats on, so some spots will be a bit darker or more rich in color. If what you mean is something else, I’d say maybe limewash isn’t the best choice for your project. You may want to research a different option. Hope that helps

Hm, you mean after it dried you’re seeing lines? You may need extra coats. If the stokes are raised/textured you can lightly sand the area and reapply

Limewash can be used outdoors, and traditionally is used in brick or cement. But if I were you I’d do some research and email the company you want to use with questions. Not all materials will be able to take the limewash. And depending on where you live (weather and sun conditions) that could effect the durability. Generally though, outdoor limewash does not have to be sealed

I’ve heard (on blogs) that it can be used on wood. But I’m not sure myself. You can reach out to the manufacturer and they can advise you. But if it’s furniture or a high touch surface, it’s probably not the best bet. Good luck!

Hi Josh, at first thanks a lot for educating people like me, I need an advice my wall is just finished it's not a dry wall it's a concrete wall plastered with cement it hadn't yet touched by any gypsum putty so far. Can I directly go on the rough concrete surface directly or you want me to apply gypsum putty 1st.

Great question! On their website they have a calculator! When you find a color you like and you are selecting the options to add to cart, under paint cans size you will find a calculator. This should help you estimate how much you will need. Alternatively their customer service is amazing. I actually emailed in the past and simply gave my room measurements and ceiling height and they guided me, and responded very quickly. Hope that helps!

The reason why you wouldn't seal it, you are unable to fix spots easily. Sealer always changes color. So adding more would look different, and might not stick the same.

How do you keep it from dusting off the walls???

I haven’t had issues with it dusting off, except for the first time I applied limewash. I’m not 100% certain, but I think if this is happening then the walls may not have needed more prep to stick better. Or you may have applied the next cost before the undercoat was dry enough. One thought would be to wipe down the entire wall with a rough wet rag to clean whatever dust may be hanging on. If some portion of limewash actually come off in the process, you can do one final coat and hopefully with all of the dust off, last coat of limewash will have the best chance of sticking to the coat under it. Not 100% sure, but hope that helps in someway

Hi, I have some experience with this using an Atelier "Izmir Blue" lime paint in a bathroom. In areas where there is likely to be splash, even just a little water will move the pigment around in the lime wash leaving marks. It need not be dirt or soap to mar the finish. The solution is to use a liquid sealer to make the surface more resilient to water splatter. Just be sure to follow the directions on the sealer, wiping off excess with a lint free cloth as you go.

You can do a matte clear coat. It may slightly alter the color/change the look a bit but you definitely can. They sell come made specifically for lime, but I don’t think you need to find a lime-specific top coat. Hope that helps! 👍🏼

Yes! One of the great things about limewash is you won’t need to redo a whole wall or anything. I’d recommend cleaning the wall with coal and water, and once dry giving the area a light sand to get off whatever leftover grease may be there. Then just paint some clouds over the area. May need a few coats after sanding but should be easy since it’s just one spot 😊

The color can also rub off onto clothes, towels, or hands. So be mindfull of that. Not all lime wash products will be the same.
