Margit has the same "glow yellow and emerge from the ground" animation as a summoned player at the start of his cutscene, it's one of those things that's easy to miss on your first playthrough that is super obvious on your second when you know the twist. I can appreciate how useful they actually made this effect. Made me create a sleep-based character once and I had a lot of fun with it. I ended up ignoring it in my original playthroughs thinking "it's probably useless because Miyazaki hates fun." I'm so glad I was wrong and he actually is dipping more into making strong status effects and magic.

@@munkimoto2294 I'll get back to you because I deleted the game a while ago. The build wasn't really matured or finished, though from memory. It was basically just a cloaked knight build using all the sleep equipment possible. From what I have seen, but not tested for myself, poison and scarlet rot do not interrupt sleep. So, if you feel like you're not above using cheap tactics...you know. I would recommend taking any creative liberty in the build. Mine was just to be a thematic "Dream Knight". I'll post the build soon to serve as a startup for anyone who wants to try one as well.

Level 31 Started as a wretch 20 Vigor 15 Mind 15 Endurance 10 Strength 14 Dexterity 14 Intelligence 12 Faith 10 Arcane Equipment: Sword of St. Trina Longbow Heater Shield Knight Armor set (didn't have confessor's) Like I said it was not really a finished build but I still had fun with it just sleep looping enemies. I just tested it as well, and can confirm, poison damage does not awaken enemies. So, scarlet rot wouldn't either. If you want to make it viable for PvP, the sleep stagger on players lasts just long enough for most charged attacks and even grab spells like inescapable frenzy to land. Of course, creative liberty is all up to you. Use a good weapon for crits like black knife or whatever you want.

This kinda makes me wish there was an "Age of Dreams" ending, where the Tarnished somehow(perhaps by using the burning of the Erdtree to spread some form of sleeping agent via the falling ash and the updraft created by the massive fire) to plunge the Lands Between into a state of (eternal?) deep, blissful sleep. Probably wouldn't make much sense though, as it wouldnt have much correlation with the Elden Ring itself, like the other endings.

Some of the enemies seem to share sleep animations that are only slightly changed to fit their proportions, like the commoner and the putrid corpse. Also the sleeping monstrous bird is really surprisingly cute? I love the way it's mouth opens and closes like it's having little snores.

A lot of creatures in the game are using the same animation skeletons. There a a lot of obvious ones that even share same animations, but there is also a lot of creatures that share the same skeletons but barely any animations. But reusing the sleep animations for those cases just makes sense

I wonder if the prevalence of sleep animations on just about everything in the game ties into the old Spirit Summoning system. Previously, you'd have to put creatures to sleep, then capture their 'dreams' to make them Spirit Summons. Zullie has a good video about it.

The putrid corpses aren't being piloted by fungus, or at least not one that's mentioned anywhere in the game. I think they are afflicted by the same issue the wandering nobles are, being unable to die properly, but in a more pronounced way since they are even more decrepit and have lost all trace of their former self.

Interesting facts I found during my sleep build is this. Enemies that stagger when sleep will keep their combos going until the end. I did found if their combo extends to a certain period then they won't stagger but will still show the sign they have been slept. Enemies that do sleep when doing their combos if extended for a certain period will just ignore sleeping all together. Found this one out on Fat Godskin when he was doing his long poking attacks. If you have the sleepy sword and you do keep attacking after an enemy is put asleep, the bar will quickly refill while they are slowly waking up. This causes them to get stuck in a sleeping loop (Godskins are weak to this) until their resistance gets too high to break the loop. I think this reason is why they put in different bar levels on the enemies. If an enemy is poisoned/rotted they cannot be put to sleep. I found this weird during my Fat Godskin fight when I got him poisoned but he never went to sleep. Same goes for Rot build up. Now I only noticed this with the Godskin since they have high health but it could be for every enemy. Sleep can be easily interrupted like if the enemy falls while doing the sleep animated like in this video but not by being rolled into unless it deals damage. I could be wrong on the rolling fact, not a whole lot of testing into it. The giants used to pulling the chest carts, sleep is great on them as it breaks the chains allowing the player to loot the chest without fighting them. If you duel wield with one sleep weapon and another non-sleep, the buildup is less. Not sure by how much but my best guess is from half to 3/4 of normal build up. If you have both weapons on build up then it will do more than attacking with one weapon. I could be wrong on this as well due to not seeing the numbers since I did testing during a playthrough. All in all, sleep is mostly useless as the majority of enemies that can be put to sleep will die pretty quickly before they do sleep or the enemies that you want to sleep will just stagger or be immune. Sleep is known for the Godskin Duo to make the fight easier so there is that. In PVP it just staggers the player, so if you have duel sleeping swords on both buffed it will stagger them. Making them unable to dodge, use items, attack, or emote.

On the note of dual-wielded weapons: FromSoft recently patched the game to reduce the status build-up of dual weapons further than it used to be. L1 attacks do significantly less status build-up than all other attacks.

very nice that 80% of the deep sleep things are harmless things that would pose little to no threat aside from the runebear. And the things that sleep would actually be useful to sleep stagger for a measly like 4 seconds

I find it hilarious that nobody considered that sleep was being saved for the DLC until it was announced. Fromsoft putting hundreds of work hours, probably thousands of dollars, and painstaking detail into a mechanic that is barely used in their games is downright common at this point.
