The thing I love about Gretsch is that they just kind of sneak up on you. I don't know how many people start their guitar journey with a Gretsch, but I would guess fewer than most. But you kind of see them around... not sure if you like the look, but you're probably a bit curious... and then before you know it, you pick one up to mess around... maybe an electromatic or something. It's impressive, fun, and best of all different than what you've been playing... before you know it, you're researching Penguins and Falcons with such vigor that Sir David Attenborough has taken notice. You're trying to juggle your finances and justifying the small fortune it takes to acquire these mystical beasts. While there are numerous wonderful guitars out there that aren't Gretsch's... it often feels like a Gretsch just adds something to the playing experience. They are not for everyone... or at least for everyone right now, but I think as you continue your guitar journey, they do become something most of us will appreciate and even cherish as guitar players.
@jkf91679 ай бұрын
I always thought that Gretsch would never agree with me. Too plinky, too fragile, too gaudy, etc. Boy was I wrong! I got an Electromatic 5422 at the beginning of the pandemic, and after having it set up by a pro, it's easily my #1.
@GamerPastHisPrime9 ай бұрын
@@jkf9167 that’s awesome! I got a 5655 Jr (like the smaller bodies), and same thing. The blue with gold hardware drew me to it, and then I had to take it home. I ended up adding a TV Jones Classic in the bridge and SuperTron in the neck, and it’s definitely a great little guitar. That was a pain in the ass to do though, lol as I did it myself, and I’ll probably never work on a semi hollow again after that.

Love these Gretsch tones, and been wanting one since watching the Hermanos Gutiérrez & Julian Lage videos. Plus there's the Soundgarden / Chris Cornell connection to them. They are one guitar than can get away with being a bit bling. I don't know if I'm such a fan of white guitars, usually. But ... then I liked Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster so much I kind of got into the white + shiny gold combo. White + gold is a nice combo for a heavy Les Paul too. And the white Baum Wingman & Celestor with the gold pickguard look awesome too. There's three electric guitar shaped holes in my collection, on is Gretsch shaped and white+gold coloured, the other is Firebird shaped. An affordable 12-string, like a Danelectro, if one shoes up second-hand would be nice too... just bought one of these Electromatic Pristince Single Cuts, in White Gold. Couldn't resist, looks beautiful and the sound has such character.

Those Gretsch Filtertrons,just something about them, they're so unique, Crystal Clear articulation, yeah they don't sound quite as good with a lot of drive like some humbuckers, but clean and a little "bit" of overdrive they're so unique and magnificent. But that's why we have a whole bunch of different guitars for different applications!
@jkf91679 ай бұрын
They sound better with a lot of drive than most humbuckers because they have clarity and cut. That's if you're not feeding back uncontrollably on a Gretsch Hollowbody.

@dog62 I recently started playing an Electromatic 5422 as my # 1 after years of Fenders. I like the fact that the midrange on the stock Blacktop Filtertrons is really snarly. I'll admit that that guitar doesn't really do "heavy," which I attribute more to the hollow body than the pickups, because a Jet with the same pickups can sound pretty dense. It does mid gain like AC/DC perfectly, though, and makes good fuzz noises as well.
