Shelf space and durability make me plump for the Standard Editions. The booklets in the Limited sets are nice, but you can find most of the text there elsewhere (although I do concede it's nice to have it all in one, handy location). Also, "Standard Edition"? For most other shows our Standard Editions would be Super Deluxe Editions! 🙂

The limited edition sets without question, they are just designed to perfection. I truly believe that these releases are some of the best of any blu ray release ever. Gorgeous design, love the way you open up the inside to find the tardis artwork and they just look fantastic on my shelf.

Well judging from the fact that I still went out to try and find the limited edition sets despite the standard edition ones being out, I think it’s fair to say that I prefer the limited sets. So glad to have them all I know some people say that the limited sets are too flimsy but I honestly don’t care as the packaging feels special, the book holder is gorgeous and the book also has loads of great BTS info

I am collecting the Limited Edition. I really like that packaging, but to be honest, I chose that one because that's what we got at first, and nobody knew there will be a regular packaging later on. As a person who likes to save space (My modern Doctor Who seasons are put in space saving thin plastic boxes with cover art designed and printed by me) I would like to have the standard edition, because I wouldn't run out of space for then this soon :D

I love the standard partly due to how they can stuff so much into such a small package. The only limited ones I collect are the ones that have stories originally broadcast during my lifetime, so that's from Season 20 onwards :)

I wish I'd held out for the 'standard editions' because they're slimmer and sturdier. Like many, I've had the trays rip loose and had to order replacements. I don't need a booklet because my shelves are groaning with DW books that go a lot deeper. Then there was all that faff with discs having to be swapped for the Season 12 set. Bit of a shakey start, wasn't it? That said, it's by far the best Blu-ray series ever produced. We're pretty spoiled to be fair.

I love the limited edition boxsets, they truly feel special. I always liken them to holding a time capsule in your hands; not just a record of "Doctor Who" from that particular era, but also as a record of the UK at the time the show was made - the documentaries, all the BBC continuity trails, actor appearances on chat shows, press clippings etc, make it genuinely feel like a snapshot from that time.

Space saving & picture/sound quality are my main concerns when deciding whether to upgrade from DVD to Blu-ray. I have 4000 disks, so any upgrade that grants new shelf space is welcome. In the case of Doctor Who I prefer the smaller standard issues. Packaging looks more durable too.

I started collecting the limited edition so as I didn't want a mix with standard ones as well. I love the packaging of the limited edition with the internal artwork plus the booklet. They look good on display and having purchased the first 10 box sets I'm looking forward to Season 22 when it eventually comes out. That will leave 15 more releases which I think at the current pace of releases will take another 6 or 7 years to complete.

I do get the limited edition versions, but I'm glad I watched this. The only 1 didn't get was the 1st - season 12. I have a region free American copy and was hoping the booklet on re-realese UK would be same as LE. It's better than US 1, but still not what I'm after

I prefer to buy the Limited Edition box sets but I did miss out on a couple of the releases (Seasons 18 and 23) so I was really pleased that on I was able to fill the gaps in my collection with the smaller standard editions when they became available.

Great video Jason. The Australian limited editions are slightly different to UK releases . They don't have the slip case. I have purchased ones from UK which has cost me probably double than buying local ones. Love the slipcase😆

What sucks is that there was never even the little pamphlet in the U.S. edition which really was a letdown and the discs used the cover photo for each disc as well. There was room for the booklet as the inside clips are present. As for why they didn't do that, it is a mystery to me, but the U.S. fans got a cheaper version of every collection

Hi Jason, it will always be the limited addition for me, for so many reasons, firstly they will only grow in value, where the regular addition won't. I love the art work in the limited editions. It feels more like a archive box sets rather that a bod standard blu ray box set.

We don't get a choice in Region A/ North America. It's Standard Edition only and they relabel this as "Tom Baker - Season Three"

both editions are good but the Limited edition one is better for the box design and the booklet inside. I own both editions of it you should do some unboxing of the standard editions Jason? I wonder when we are getting season 22 Jason it’s been very quiet at the moment I always wondered if the Collection would come in the Steel book range?

Once Standard is out, the Limited can rise to hundreds on eBay. So, get Standard unless you're a billionaire. But, don't wait to get Standard, get Limited if you can. Tip: If youre Australian, both are slipcases, we don't have a fancy little thing on front

Those of us unfortunate enough to reside in the U.S. only get the standard edition. Also, the releases stopped including the cardboard outer sleeve after the first two blu-ray releases.

Great video! Thanks! As I don’t own the rerelease set it’s interesting to see what it looks like. I’m impressed with the scaled down version, though I do like the ‘bells and whistles’ on the original as it makes it feel like a more definitive collector set of the season. I must confess that I don’t read the entire booklet, but like most things I collect I just like knowing that it’s there in case one day I do. I guess that’s all part of collecting when you’re a fan. Interesting note: all booklets have to have a multiple of four as the total page count including front and back covers. Just thought I’d mention 🙂

I have had a couple of issues with the disc trays being loose on several of the limited edition sets. However it's not really something that bothers me that much because the discs are at least secure on the trays themselves. The limited edition packaging still feels like a premium, quality product and I think they're nicer. Plus I really like reading through the booklets (it's the first thing I do when I get my copy of the sets). For those reasons I still try to get the limited sets. That said, the standard edition is a lot more deluxe than I expected, and I might have to pick one up as a curiosity if I see one on offer

Good comparison between limited edition and standard version. Agree that both have pluses - I have been collecting the limited editions - once you invest In either version - I assume that most people would stick with the same one. There is though n logic in collecting both versions. Looking forward to next Colin Baker set. I note that Dr Who is having its first 4K discs - both Peter Cushing not can films. I have always liked these and I anticipate that since Studio Canal is releasing them that remaster will be solid.

I prefer the standard editions - they take up less shelf space. Strangely, Amazon are taking orders for the upcoming season 22, but only limited edition packaging. Don't know where to get the standard editions ? You'd think they would offer both, really.

consider yourself fortunate. Here in Australia, the old distributor dropped Doctor Who and somebody else is making them. on the spine, where it says "season XX" has been moved up 1cm and now does not align with the rest

@@jarnopp I prefer the limited editions. I was able to obtain the season 17 box set here in America. To me it is worth the effort and cost to obtain if you can afford it. Otherwise, the standard editions are an excellent alternative.

As somebody who has bought all the episodes on DVD, buying the Blu-Ray releases didnt really cross my mind. But I really enjoy special features, and I know this is one of the selling points for the Blu-Ray releases. So thank you for the video clearly detailing the differences between the two types of editions. 🙂🙂 I'm tempted to buy the Standard Editions simply because of storage space, cost and being late to the game with some of the releases. My only gripe would be I feel the booklet should still have the foreword/series overview in both editions, but that's just my own opinion...

Hi Jason! I definitely prefer the limited edition sets. They feel really special and I love the big artwork and the image of the TARDIS interior on the inside. I've had no problems with mine so far - touch wood! Last month, I got Colin Baker to sign my Season 23, and Sylvester McCoy sign my Season 24!! They make these two even more special!!

Being Australian, we can slightly different box sets. They started identical but by the third season released they cheaped out on the hardcover packaging into softer card. Not cheaper of course. And we don't get the reissues either, once the box set is gone, it's gone. Given my shelf space issues and preference for Amaray cases that I can replace if broken, given the choice I would swap all my box sets for the simpler ones

@@jarnopp and how! Also, the distributor changed from Roadshow to Sony, so the spine labels don't match. It's all a dogs breakfast. Another reason I'd swap to regular cases is whenever I remove a disc from these boxsets, I fear I'm about to snap it in half! VERY tough to get them out.

I always go for the limited editions for two main reasons: 1. They’re always first, so I’m never in a position of knowing other people have this thing I want but can’t have (ignoring delivery delays, etc.) 2. Most of the things that are removed in the other release *are the main reasons I want the sets at all!* : the facts booklet, the special packaging, and the separate disc artwork.

The Ltd edition packaging is dreadful and they should have gone with the standard packaging from the start - but then I've always detested digipacks for how easily damaged they can become, especially if it's a music CD one wants to listen to on a regular basis. Give me a nice plastic case anyday and shove your carbon neutral BS where Eye of Harmony doesn't shine. I don't know about modern DW fans, but us oldies have many classic TV interests and the Ltd Ed packaging just takes up twice as much valuable space on the shelf as it needs to.

I think I have some sort of unhealthy obsession with the limited edition ones. I have them all and I just love staring at them. The wait for season 22 is something I can't stop thinking about. These sets are just beautiful

It dipends on you're surcomstances.
