What magic plugins do YOU use to make your songs LOUD?
@gregfender

Currently my faves are the Newfangled Saturate Clipper into the Oxford Inflator into the Newfangled Elevate Limiter. I'm not entirely certain if using two clippers in series really makes sense from a scientific point of view, but I prefer the sound of each one doing a little rather than either one doing a lot. After watching your video though, I feel like I may still be leaning harder than I need to on the limiter. I'll have to play around with it a bit more.

if you have Pro L, set the attack time to slowest and release time to fastest, and the transient and release controls to 0%. That way you make it a clipper. Also, try to experiment with the lookahead and limiter variants.

How 'bout that v. 2 limiters or clipper and then 2 limiters or limiter, clipper, and final limiter? 🙃
@JulesCalella
@JulesCalella 3 жыл бұрын
This is my first time hearing of a clipper. Is it just a specialized compressor that only cuts the peaks of the signal? (but isn't that technically what a limiter is too)
@djabthrash
@djabthrash 3 жыл бұрын
A limiter turns down the signal that exceeds a certain threshold under a certain threshold. It's like keeping ingredients under a lid by keeping your hands on a lid. You're squashing things. A clipper chops down the part of the signal that is above the threshold. It's like cutting part of ingredient that is above where the lid would be. You're not squashing, you're just cutting the louder/higher part. Not the same.

What if it was Clipper, then Compression, then the Limiter? Sounded good to me. Did like 5db for my Clipper personally

Great video, very nice to have a level matched comparison for once on KZbin :) Question: When mastering for streaming, do you set a true peak limiter at the end set to a specific value (like -1 dbTP) or is a normal ceiling limiter enough in your opinion?
@RaytownProductions
@RaytownProductions 3 жыл бұрын
I HIGHLY recommend setting your FINAL OUTPUT level to -1 dbTP. If it's really loud, you might even want to set it lower like -1.5 or -2 dbTP. The reason being is the transcoding process using in streaming will make errors that can result in some nasty sounding distortion. You can try converting your song to a typical streaming quality resolution like 128 kbps mp3 or something and listen back. If you are ok with how it sounds when exporting from your session at -0.2 or -1.0 dbTP, then just go with that setting. If you want to maxamize your files so they don't clip, check out sonnox procodec - it can be used to automatically adjust the final volume to ensure they won't clip when transcoded to whatever quality lossy codec you want. Hope that helps! Thanks again for watching 😊

@@RaytownProductions Awesome, thanks! And overall loudness doesn't matter at all right? (Even though Spotify for example requests -14 LUFS) It will only get turned down but I assume the track will sound more or less the same as long as the peaks are under control.
@RaytownProductions
@RaytownProductions 3 жыл бұрын
@@MOMetalProductions I've gone back and forth on this a lot. And all the research I've done suggests to me to just make the songs sound as good as possible and let the platforms worry about the normalization. Super loud masters are still extremely common on those platforms and the big names aren't complaining. Just my perspective. Hope it helps!
@MOMetalProductions
@MOMetalProductions 3 жыл бұрын
@@RaytownProductions I agree, especially in metal the loudness is so essential for making a track sound full and powerful. It's pretty difficult to have a metal song mastered at -14 LUFS with peaks at -1 db sound powerful with so much dynamic range :)

yep that's been my end of the chain combo for a couple years now! clipping is the key, i think a lot of people get it confused with clipping on the input when recording, or using daws where you can clip on individual tracks if they go over 0dbfs, if there are still any out there that actually do that
