Chocolate Starfish... is such an amazing record. Amazing musician ship and atmosphere. I feel like most people just hated it because of the album cover, title and the fact that Limp Bizkit was EVERYWHERE in the early 2000`s. A lot of people never gave this album a chance. Can you talk shit about a band just because they have succes? I don`t think so. Greetings from Germany :)

It’s the combination of guitars/amplifiers that he was using at the time. PRS into Mesa Boogie rectifiers. Absolutely deadly for this kind of hard rock. I wish he hadn’t stopped using them..

@@littlecozettescrew6818 exactly. I think he sounds too dirty nowadays. Only his clean sound is still good. Mike Smith also used PRS and Mesa Boogie, and his tone was killer.

@@clothbooster Yes, Mike was smart to use the same gear as Wes had..it was the band’s tone. Obviously if something is working well, you don’t come in and change it. As for the clean tone, I forgot to mention that Wes used and continues to use a Roland Jc120 solid state combo amp for his clean tones (these are the 2 smaller combos that can be seen on top of his bigger Mesa cabinets). I’ve never played one, but they sure sound good when Wes plays through them. This is one part of his rig that he hasn’t changed from. If I had to guess, the only reason Wes stopped using the Mesa Recto heads was that other bands started using them too, and he didn’t want to be like everyone else. I think this was a mistake. Sorry for the long technical answer lol..

@@littlecozettescrew6818The Jc120 are so heavy weight wise and loud, even the jc40 but the tone is really really clean, I find it interesting how much the tone change to like a slightly overdrive when he plays live a Fender or Vox Ac30 on loan. I mean, after the Mesa he switched to the Diezel Vh4 and sometimes with the Bogner for Distortion (like in Eat The Day, Tut pt.1) which was in my opinion his peak tone.

It's not playback, Fred just has live vocal effects like compression and what sounds like a touch of hard tune, stuff like that. Likely the same effect settings used in recording the album, so his vocals have a very similar color to those on the studio release. It's actually a pretty common process in live settings for big bands/artists.

Lethal uses plenty of loops, Fred uses a weird vocal stomp box, i forget it's been a decade... But this is MOSTLY live with a few vocal cues pre recorded "now i know why you wanna hate me" ...But even that could've been live if someone was operating the transitions on the voc fx. For me the video is out of sync but its definitely live. They're a tight fucking band.
