For example, if it leads to Dunn reviewing video of games and getting on zoom to walk Crusty Sideshow through coaching errors she made and what she should have done differently, Sides might stop making the most obvious errors. It still wouldn't make an incompetent coach competent overnight, but if Crusty Sideshow knows she's being watched and held accountable, it could improve matters.

At the time Dan asked Dunn about it, he might not have yet learned about the thing with Angel and the Aces. But this still could have been the seminal moment that lifted some of the abuse. When Caitlin came in it changed the dynamics and style of their games which I'm sure Sides wasn't prepared to handle and had been trying to "figure it out." The truth is, unless Sides can adjust her coaching to fit the new team, she won't have a team to coach at the end of this season when her contract is up.

Humbly, Ben, I disagree. That clip with Dan is several weeks old. If you listen further she talks about Caitlin having to fit into the system. I contend the 'SYSTEM' is the one Lin and Christy agree on. My one proof that is obvious, why are we seeing the same things 26 games into the season. I state emphatically, that if Lin was serious about not seeing on the court what she approves, Christy would have been gone already. That she is still there, tells me that Lin is seeing the improvement. Don't kid yourself, winning games is allowing the glaring issues to be masked and not addressed. What are examples. The half court is not a full motion offense. The screens and picks still are not as numerous or effectively being done. That is all coaching. The putting Caitlin in the corner with no offense run for her for stretches of up to 4 minutes without touching the ball. Having Erica wheeler in the game at the same time as both Caitlyn and Kelsi on the court. The important last possessions not having Caitlyn or Aliah take the last shot, or at least run plays where they are involved to making the assist. She finally has Lexi and Katie Lou playing instead of Grace and Kristy. nd Linn had to approve the dropping of Celeste Taylor, a defensive specialist that never saw playing time. And speaking of defense, the Fever only display and run one defense all the time. No, Lin and Christy are saying and seeing the same thing. That is why i have put in your comments previously that both Dunn and Sides need to go. I would offer either Cheryl Miller or former Iowa Coach the GM, and let them bring in a professional coach that is in board with a game plan to success going forward. That is the only solution. If things were changing for the better, we wouldn't see the Caitlin shows of emotion and anger during games, or looks of bewilderment, knowing her coaches don't have a clue.
@NADRIPmusic2 ай бұрын
I agree with your larger premise. The system resulted in a 160% improvement in wins last season, and is on pace for another dramatic improvement in wins this season, and meeting the team's goal of making the playoffs this season. These are indisputable facts. I also agree that all the other things you mention did happen. I, however, disagree that these are bad things. You personally, based on your subjective views and whatever understanding of basketball you have, might not have liked them, but I understand why they were done and agree that's it a valid part of the process that Dunn wouldn't be upset about the way you are because she would have more information and insight than you do. At a minimum, we cannot say for a fact that these individually are bad or good things, only that the team continues to win more (fact), CC continues to improve dramatically from the start of the season (fact) and the Fever as a team continue to improve as evidenced by them individually and as a team setting many records (fact). I emphasize the team aspect because it takes both ends to make an assist happen, for instance. I probably could get into every little thing you mentioned and tear it apart and show why it's actually a good thing but not knowing your level of basketball knowledge I'd have to start with very basic things and it would take way too long to cover them all. I'll just use as an example that Celeste Taylor had, according to the assessment of Fever coaching staff, numerous "bad habits" on defense that she got away with in college but would take a long time for her to unlearn. Still, she was intriguing enough that they carried her a long time, but finally decided they'd rather keep Grace Berger and Victaria Saxton over CT which tells you something. You can also see that CT was, after a LONG time as free agent, later picked up on a 7-day contract by the Phoenix Mercury right before they played the Fever, because the Mercury needed another active player and also apparently to get some insight into how to beat the Fever and CC, but that didn't seem to help as the Fever won anyway and CC personally burned CT easily multiple times in that game, demonstrating why the aforementioned "bad habits" CT has are such a liability, and that CT did not shine for the Phoenix Mercury in that time or assert herself as a great defender by WNBA standards, just as she had not done so for the Fever. So it seems your entire subjective reasoning for listing Celeste Taylor as a coaching issue is because she was considered a good college-level defender, when we all know that college skills don't always translate to the pro level. But all the FACTS we have for her as a pro support that the decision to cut her was reasonable. Again, it would take way too long to similarly go through every one of your petty offenses you list which obviously don't stop the Fever from winning or continuously imrproving, but they are all equally as silly if you had more understanding and basketball knowledge.

Bluder or almost anyone else! How about Bluder as coach and Cheryl Miller as GM through the 2025 season? I think C Miller is over the top with some of the $ demands for the WNBA that she has commented on. But at this point almost anyone would be an improvement. No other WNBA coach prowls the sidelines with arms flailing and grabbing the players, unable to speak positively about all of your players (not just your pets) throwing the players to the curb in pressers...and the GM, she should have been vocal before the season started with the ridiculous Fever schedule to begin the season! C Sides take a lesson from L Trammell after the Wings beat the Fever before the break, that is how a coach should handle a postgame presser and how to speak about your players. Both GM & Coach Sides need to walk, and where is the owner through all this? Why hasn't anyone been able to interview him? Amazes me that the WNBA seems to think that the "Fans" are all wrong! Sure the same "Fans" that spend their money to sell out arenas, have driven merchandise sales to all time highs and spend their time commenting on forums such as this? I really like BD, but the man would have starved on this platform (covering WNBA) last year, who wants to watch/cover/comment on a halfcourt game played by a bunch of slow, old lesbians and hateful ego maniacs that are not relatable to the vast majority of fans? We want to see a fast paced game, no prison yard thug ball, no foul/racist name calling...just basketball. And why did the Commissioners (NBA & WNBA) allow the committee to select the "same olds" for the Olympic team? Players that have been chronically injured the past couple of seasons, players that have not played enough (any) minutes this season to justify them being on the team, players that have publicly and OFTEN showed disrespect for this USA yet are "chosen" to "represent" this same USA in the Olympics?

Both the coach can be bad and the general manager can be bad. Both things can be true at the same time. We know Sides is bad, we all see that, but the team put around Caitlin is bad from Dunn.
@shf45922 ай бұрын
And I don’t understand why if the Mercury could put Celeste Taylor on a 7-day contract since Taurasi was hurt, why couldn’t the Fever have done the same since Temi has been hurt and unable to play for several weeks? They could have gotten someone like Monika C, who played with CC at Iowa and knows how to run & catch her passes. Dunn didn’t adjust for Temi’s injury just like Sides makes no adjustments to her game plans when they are needed.

Hey Ben Daniel, I have only listened to the first 1:10 of your podcast . . . and I was thinking the exact same thing. However, I feel as though Lin Dunn didn't even know or realize that Caitlin is a one-of-a -lifetime- generational athlete that she is until she saw how easily Cheryl Miller was able to coach Caitlin and the other young talent in the all-star game. And the young all-stars so easily beat the Veteran Olympians with a higher quality coach/ leader. People like Lin Dunn don't worry about the 'small stuff' and until the All Star game she realized how much she had minimized the Caitlin / Christie situation. Now that other teams and owners have started vocalizing their interest in Caitlin's talent, reach and influence, Lin is realizing that her only way to retain any good or great player is to have respect & credibility with these young ladies. In Caitlin's case, nothing is tying her to Indiana, especially with the leagues new 'expansion rules'. Christie Sides should have already been feeling the heat of intimidation. The part I don't understand about the WNBA is that a simple coach. like Christie Sides is the most inexperienced person in this scenario; but, yet she gets paid 500k dollars. To Lin Dun, I say, "Money talks & BS walks" . . . .

Caitlin Clark is being mis quoted. She was asked if any of the senior players give her advice. Her reply was "I wish". THis question did not relate to during a game speifically but was a general inquiry not specific to any particular situation. She did not say that her coach did not give her advice or instruction. This would clearly be untrue - the quality of that instruction is another matter.
@JE-IC2 ай бұрын
I remember the press conference, it wasn't really clear in the context of the conference what the question meant. It was only later that I saw a report about Angel Reese receiving advice from Aces players while the Sky vs Aces game was in progress. Ie, her opponents were giving her advice while the game was in progress. At the time Dakich asked Dunn about it, he might not have yet learned about the thing with Angel and the Aces. In that interview, it looks like both were lacking knowledge of exactly what the reporter who asked Caitlin that question meant by it. It's a red flag that Dakich's interview seemed to be the first time Dunn had heard about it. Doesn't she watch the post-game press conferences?
@patricialanghurst37982 ай бұрын
I think she was asked if "any of the veteran players,"etc. and she said no, I wish. Mitchell, a veteran player referred to Caitlin as " the kid," and for a long time wouldn't pass to her. Disresoectful, and no help!

You do a great job and I want to see you have at least 500K subs. We need honest sports journalist like you. Thanks. I need to let you know I'm a 68 year old sports fan from Oklahoma that's white. I hate to have to say that but the demographics are important. Fans in my demographic and others, are fleeing the networks and professional sports all together because of the racism and lack of game. We miss magic and Byrd banging away with no fouls. We miss fake real stats where a pitcher is not going toss a snowball to the plate to give someone a hit or a lane to dunk. We saw Women's College basketball remind us of how the game should be played and players like Clark and Reese and many more, showing their skills and battling from tip to the end. We're coming back in droves to watch the WNBA and wanting to enjoy the game we love so much. We have it so close we can taste it. Then what do we get? A bunch of WNBA players that should have hung it up years ago. We get a bunch of WNBA players trying their best to give clear lanes for dunks (that never happen). We see coaches like Sides that couldn't coach a YWCA team. We see WNBA players hate her because she's white and the best chance to make the game the Number one in the eyes (and wallets) of the fans that have left. The WNBA would rather kill it's chance to make a ton of money than let a white girl in the group. They would rather keep the NBA (whose losing fans by the bucket full every day) supporting them (and that will end soon) when they could be making their own way and outpacing the NBA. You speak the truth. If it was against a white player or coach, I'd be behind you, as I have with others that neglected to hire the best coaches (that may be black) rather than keep the same ones that were out of touch of the game. We need you and others to speak the truth even if I don't agree with it. We the former fans will continue to support you because we know you are not bought out by the woke or the Jokes. Keep it up. I may get blocked but this is the reality of today. We want to come back as fans, but we need the league and folks like you to do it

Aah, I'd believe it if I heard Dunn say it herself. It would have been a real game changer if she went public. Did Dunn also talk to Sides about her adjustments and rotations mishap since then? It only got more unpredictable, if she's trying.
@blee302 ай бұрын
Sorry, Lin..... But Dunn shouldn't have to be TOLD what's going on. She should be on top of every word her star players say, and exactly what's happening on the team. She should be extremely involved in the people within her team, not just the numbers
@outsidethegarden2 ай бұрын
she shouldn't even have to wait to have someone bring that interview with CC to her attention. she should have been asking Sides every week, "how's Caitlin doing? how are you changing your plays and your coaching to help her teammates work with her?" and then checking in with CC herself. not expecting her to criticize her coach; just making sure she knows that Dunn is keeping track of how everything is going. management 101: you don't just let your people run things without any oversight, especially when there's a lot at stake. "I trust you to coach, but I need to know what's happening." run the risk of them feeling micro-managed, until you find the right balance. "hands-off" is a risky strategy, when you're working with a generational talent/#1 draft pick, and hoping her teammates and she can work together. and if Dunn didn't know that Sides is basically incompetent, then she's a fool. but nope: "Christie Sides is doing FINE. FINE." uh huh.

I have to disagree with you on this one. Has Dunn been living under a rock?!! At this point we are half way through the season and in took Dan D to call her on the carpet for her to finally open her eyes and see what the rest of the world has been seeing! Did she not care about the health and welfare of her team? Does she know what protecting your investment means? Now she is trying to save face (my opinion). Where has she been all of this time and the owner of the Fever too for that matter.
@craigkdillon2 ай бұрын
Also, it is the OWNER'S responsibility to call the league and other teams to quash the racism, insults, and attacks. The Fever owner needs to sell his team, since he doesn't take ownership seriously. Herb Simon needs to get out of Basketball, if he is going to be an absentee owner.

Ok, Ok, Ok, nobody should be in Charge as a G.M. in any league and NOT be aware of what is obviously happening. The fans, the social media, and the games themselves. Do you NOT watch any games as a G.M. to be aware of your #1 draft choice? The future of your team and league? Does an interview conversation on a you-tube site make you Captain Obvious? I said all along this is big business and they should have a HUMAN RESOURCES with rules and regulations. Even the Government has made laws against workplace BULLYING, DESCRIMINATION, FROM COLOR, RACE, ETHNICITY, SEXUAL PREFERENCE, RELIGIOUS, BELIEFS. How did the WNBA get away with this treatment at all. Then to NOT be aware how your coach is treating the future of your League and Franchise. You are just collecting a paycheck and need to retire, or you are also a WOKE member of the LGBTQ+ Club and give your stamp of approval. Don't buy this line of SH!T!!

Nope. Dunn should have been advocating for Caitlin from day one, and observing her coach fumbling. She should also have not waited until Dan Dakich broached the subject to take action. She responded to Dakich as if she was right on top of things and would get back to him, when in reality she shouldn't need prompting from anyone in order to take action. Also how invested is Dunn in the team when she doesn't even live near Indy? Dunn doesn't get a pass from me. Both she and Sides need to go.

No I think that this epiphany by LD was exactly that. The moment of clarity came from someone waking her up and schooled by whom I do not know, however after all these years in the game for her not to recognize that CC was not being coached right, nor have plan to how to coach her is criminal from the get go.

If that's what happened, good for Lin Dunn. And a word from the W to the players, "Enough, ladies" may have helped. It seems that the race hazing may have been on the way out anyway, like "Okay, we've made the point." During the last Sky/Fever match up, Chennedy Carter behaved herself and even helped Caitlin avoid taking a spill at one point while Angel was civil possibly on coach's orders
