I get really cranky at these armchair experts with their ignorant criticisms! Lina Paliughi was a great artist with a unique, expressive voice and was never judged for poor technique or dodgy passagio before KZbin was invented.

Actually, yeah, they were criticized if it was justified. Personally, I like Lina Pagliughi's Amina, and prefer it to others like Roberta Peters. However, even Lina fails to capture the sensitivity of Adelina Patti's rendition.

It's not true, in those times singers were criticised all the time and booed like in a stadium, the problem is that today nobody really knows what the real opera singing should be, when a light voice like Pagliughi's could fill up all the theatre with a whisper

La terrazzini oltre che straordinaria cantante é stata un ottima insegnante : ascoltó la Pagliughi quando aveva solo 8 anni e dichiaró di aver trovato la sua erede, voleva anche addottarla ma non se ne fece niente per via del matrimonio ( il terzo ) della terrazzini, i genitori della Pagliughi non vollero assolutamente la convivenza fra la terrazzini di 56 anni con un marito e una " figlia" di ventisei... Le diede comunque quella levigatezza di emissione delle grandi oltre ad una tecnica straordinaria un peccato di che in un intervista la Pagliughi disse di aver studiato pochissimo con la Terrazzini , cosa storicamente falsa .. comunque si somigliano molto anche nei limiti fisici' le loro voci angeliche erano imprigionate in fisicitá matronali che evitavano ogni somiglianza con i loro personaggi sulla scena ma questo é capitato con quasi tutti i cantanti lirici... Oggi pretendendo troppo si arriva ad ottenere poco ' la telecamera ha distrutto i cantanti, la tecnica si fonda a volte anche con l'" immobilitá corporea cosa che oggi é diventata inaccettabile.. Nel segreto di un microsolco diventano tutti belli e affascinanti come disse Caruso alla Terrazzini per convincerla a fare Traviata ( non si sentiva fisicamente all' altezza del personaggio di violetta)" Luisa tu quando canti diventi un alice .... Accetta questa scrittura farai un successo quando aprirai la bocca il pubblico si scorderá di tutto il resto...

I studied with Lina for a year, in Milano, in 1968. She and Toti del Monte were rivals still...Toti was called the GOLDEN VOICE..and Lina's..the SILVER VOICE...it was small and yes pure in the higher register...and Suzanne Derringer is correct with her analysis of Lina's voice. It was not stable...(if you listen carefully to "Ah non giunge"... you can hear the bounce in a sustained note) as she didn't teach technique....but interpretation. Also, just as a point..small voices are MUCH easier to develop than large voices.

Viene da altri tempi certo, ma la Pagliughi (che qui è quarantacinquenne) solo non moltissimi anni prima conquistava nella voce quella corposità che le cambiava finalmente la voce da quella che era sempre parsa , almeno per me, la voce di "una bimba prodigio" in una voce di vera donna capace di grandi passioni. Convengo che nel brano vi siano delle imperfezioni, ma ai tempi della Pagliughi la tecnica vocale non aveva ancora raggiunto gli altissimi livelli che noi abbiamo potuto invece apprezzare ammirati nella Callas . Io purtroppo sento i soprano d'oggi cantare questo brano e sento che solo raramente essi cercano, durante l'esecuzione, di creare l'atmosfera e la dolcezza che arie come questa, richiedono. Naturalmente mi riferisco ai soprani che cantano senza avere il microfono fra i seni. la -saluto

La ritrovo, ma d'altra parte è più che logico Ho appena rilasciato un commento cattivello e allora con Lei scherzerò un poco. Credo che questo stupendo soprano non avrebbe avuto difficoltà alcuna a nasconde un gran bel microfono fra i seni! Almeno da come mi fu descitta da chi ebbe la fortuna di vederla in recita al Carlo Felice......entrava in scena, il teatro restava un pò spiazzato e poi... un ira di Dio Impossibie dimenticarla. Le confido che amo moltissimo Toti dal Monte ,e il pensare che la Pagliughi fosse considerata la sua erede mi trova concorde appieno.

Fabio Casadei Turroni, purtroppo la Toti Dal Monte assai inferiore era molto reclamizzata per aver cantato spesso con Toscanini e il tutto nocque alla Pagliughi che aveva una voce piu' bella e una coloratura strabiliante (la Tetrazzini fu sua unica maestra) eppoi, rispetto alla Toti, la Pagliughi, era molto piu' espressiva e soprattutto moderna. La Toti sempre una "bambolina".

The trouble is, her voice is not equalized. The middle and higher tones are very different from the lower ones, which are gutteral and ugly. Where she is using head resonances, it's a pure but distinctive sound. She doesn't have the technique to make the passagio smoothly from lower to middle voice. I remember her from an old Cetra recording of UN GIORNO DI REGNO. I remember the same technical problem there as well - and I haven't heard that recording in 50 years. This is the problem with 'coloraturas' trained in much 20th century. Sills for instance...or before her in the US, Roberta Peters. They were trained for high notes but the connection to the root of the voice was lacking.

One of my favorite coloraturas is Roberta Peters. Sills is not far behind. My all time favorite soprano is Claudia Muzio. Peters version is outstanding in so many ways. Listen to Galli-Curci and you will see many flaws but much feeling.
