My mother did not like to stay long to visit but I was always one to remember details and I am very glad about seeing this information even though the video is poor quality. I loved reading all and everything I can get my hands on about Mr. Lincoln. Did any of you read any of Carl Sandburg biography about Lincoln? Very interesting read if you can take the time at the Library to read parts of it like I did years ago. One event was about Charles Chiniquy the Canadian priest that was defended by Lincoln.

I don’t think we give enough credit to how much Mr. Lincoln suffered mentally and physically while he was in office. I believe that if he had served that second term it would have significantly shortened his life. The pain and suffering he endured during the Civil War and trying to end it. He also knew that afterwards it would be just as hard to reconcile the nation. Women lost their husbands so therefore became destitute, left with children and no way to make a living. He saw what was coming and probably dreaded it. Lincoln gave more than his life for his country he was giving his all. What more could any man give he gave his heart. Don’t tell me one person can’t make a difference.

Lincoln's body had been well preserved by embalming and was taken on a 1,654 mile, 13 day journey by train which made many stops along the way from Washington D.C. to Springfield Illinois, so that hundreds of thousands could view Lincoln's open casket along the route. In 1901 in order to prove Lincoln's corpse had not been stolen in 1875, his casket was opened for the last time in the presence of his son Robert and some 23 witnesses in total, where it was attested that Lincoln's body was in a state of remarkable preservation still.

It was an adventure. My final destination that trip was Kansas City. Springfield was on the way. I camped outside of Springfield and bicycled in for the day to tour Lincolns house and the grave site. I was not in a hurry. I took 10 days to do it. I took camping gear, a few tools, maps etc. Food, camping, and motels were readily available. I am 64 now. Too old to attempt such a trip by bicycle now. I recall days of vigorous peddling and enjoying the sights. Fantastic farmland in Central and Southern Illinois. Your corn fields there ours in Ohio look puny. I packed up the bike and gear and took the Greyhound home after hitting Leavenworth Kansas. My brother was stationed there in the military.

A little info: When a person is riding a horse on a statue - if the horse has 1 foot off the ground - that person was wounded in battle. It the horse has 2 feet off the ground - the rider was kill in war!!!!! If all 4 feet are on the ground - the rider was neither wounded or killed in battle!!!!!! Gutzon Borglum - who carved Mount Rushmore - quit carving Stone Mountain in Georgia - because his staff was not being paid (the Daughters of the Confederacy simply ran out of money! The park was purchased by the State of Georgia in the last 1950's - before that - it was owned by the a family that was in the KKK - and they did have Friday night cross burnings!!!!!!). They finally got paid - but they never finished the Stone Mountain relief - and it is the largest relief sculpture on earth - carved into the side of Stone Mountain which is the largest piece of exposed granite on earth (and it runs for about 75 miles in all directions - underground!!! Some neighborhoods do not allow basements - because of the granite and the fact that dynamiting is not allowed!!!!! The relief takes up almost 4 acres of the mountain side!!!!!!!! The relief which was started in 1923 - was finally finished about 1970!!!!!!!! And I was born in Arlington, Virginia - but I cannot be buried there!!!!!!!! There is only 1 cemetery and today you have to either be killed in war - or a Captain or above in some branch of the armed forces to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Land is scarce and there is no more even close to Arlington!!!!!!!!!!!!
