I love this series of lectures. As a person who has spent considerable time watching and reading just about anything I can get my hands on regarding President Lincoln and this period of American history, this series provides insight and perspective which was new to me. On the other hand, the professor's entertaining delivery, down to earth and even humoris approach makes the series both educational and entertaining. I highly recommend viewing all four parts.

In 1747, a road was laid out from York, Pennsylvania that eventually led to the establishment of the Town of Gettysburg. Three things about Pickett's Charge that never get mentioned. (A) Lee wanted to end the war one way or another. A successful July 3rd would have defeated the Union and forced them to retreat towards Washington. A Rebel defeat would mean that he would have to retreat having exhausted their artillery supply. (B) Lee had the largest number of cannon ever assembled in the Western Hemisphere (and largest ever since). How could he, the other Rebel generals or any little boy not want to see/hear/feel all those cannons fire together?! They could be heard in Harrisburg! After they fired all those cannonbols, Lee had to order the mass infantry charge. (C) Winfield Scott Hancock was in-charge of defending the Union center. He had his artillery and troops hold their fire to after the Rebel bombardment and the infantry charge was too far along to halt. Lee, Longstreet and Pickett were tricked into thinking they had softened the Union center. Hancock then opened up with fire on both their flanks and center. The Federal troops also had a stone wall like the South had at Fredericksburg. Hancock masterfully baited Lee. I don't know if Meade had anything to do with that. The next day was July 4th (7/4) and Lee prepared a defense for a Union attack that never came. A torrential rain started in the afternoon that continued for days while Lee directed his well-organized retreat. On that same day, Vicksburg surrendered to Grant after a 47-day siege. another man that knew the struggle for blacks, and how he spoke up for their cause was Fredrick Douglas. one of the best regiment to fight this cause, was the 54th Massauchets division. Just were willing to fight this just cause, and did it with honor plain and simple.

Thank God for Lincoln lest the Union would not have been saved. The war took a lot out of Lincoln he aged a lot and I m sure the blood of all those casualites weighed heavily on his soul. Let us never forget him

albert camerato Th response of leaders to crisis at different times is a legitimate subject for comparison. Lincoln’s concern to maintain his authority within the law is the opposite of Trumps disregard for law to insure his benefit

Lincoln was smart / savvy enough to recognize the line; he took steps that were constitutionally impermissible but in the cause of preserving the Republic. Those same actions should be scrutinized as they lead to a gradual increase in power of the executive branch where now a president who doesn't recognize those limits uses that power for his personal ends to the detriment of the country.

Two things, Meade predicted the attack of the following day during the council of war that took place the night of the second day, he told General Gibbon (part of Hancock's Corps) that if Lee was there the next day the attack would come towards the position he and his men were defending, Hancock was not the highest ranking general in that part of the battlefield, that was Oliver Howard, but Meade put Hancock in charge as he was his most competent subordinate so the failure of the charge has a lot to do with Meade's own decisions even he was not directly involved in that particular sector; also the one who decided about the delay of the Union cannonade to lull the Confederates into believing their own artillery had been successful was General Henry Hunt, the chief of artillery of the Army, Hancock actually questioned him about this since the lack of response from their own guns was demoralizing the troops.

@@blmetal65 It's unfortunate that your view of the capitalist system seems to be controlled by marxist theory that is spoon fed to us by leftwing professors who never had to create wealth or meet a payroll. The tax cuts are what made the unemployment rate go down. Millionaires in business want to stay in business and with more funds available to them, they create new jobs. JFK recognized that and got Congress to lower taxes and unemployment went down in the early 60's. It's doesn't matter if someone in power "cares" as long as they do their job. The capitalist system creates wealth and jobs far beyond what marxist systems are ever able to do. Don't obsess on this General Motors thing, they were building cars nobody wanted during the Obama Administration & the President tried to bail them out then, but they've kept producing new sedans that don't offer enough value or differentiation when the market prefers SUV's (ugh). I have owned the same 2007 Honda Accord for 11 years because of its reliability. The last General Motors cars I had didn't last, but were built by members of the same union United Auto Workers as build the Honda in Ohio. GM management is just whistling the same old stale tune, unfortunately, for their workers & stockholders. But I've worked in industry for years & have seen bad management about to ruin the firms I worked for & was able to get out & change jobs a few times before they folded. Workers need to keep aware of the marketplace & be flexible.
