Whoever said plastic takes hundreds of years to break down has never worked on a 10 year old car.
@reecenewton3097
@reecenewton3097 4 жыл бұрын
Had a Mark IV Continental that just a few years old the plastic door panels started to rattle themselves to death, cracking all over the place. I was reduced to removing the panels and "fixing" them by epoxying on screen wire over the back of the cracks. The plastic was too brittle and the doors too heavy to work together for long.

Remember the commercial where the last line was "Take a new look at plastic"? Every time some plastic clip or other plastic item would break, a guy I used to work with would say "Take a new look at plastic"! He also said "every thing is a hammer". I picked up his then new Fluke 88 meter and said "I can use this as a hammer"? He changed his tune right quick! LOL.

We had a 2008 HON-DOO Odyssey with the auto locks that engage at 20mph. When it was cold outside, say mid-20's or below, it would trigger the locks five times in a row. The driver's door lock had a third wire in the connector so the computer could detect the lock state; apparently when it was cold, for whatever reason, it read "unlocked" even when it was locked, and would try five times before giving up. To fix it, I found the OEM part number online, found the best price I could find on the OEM part, and then totaled the van and bought a new one.

The door panels on these 2003-2011 Town Cars are such garbage. Car is substantial, well designed, over engineered, will drive 500K miles...and the door panels cannot take one ounce of abuse. I've plastic welded the tabs back onto the door panels. I get spare grab handles since the plastic retainers always break off. Junko. The rivet breaking off was common on the early build 2003 models - had two cars where it broke off and did the same thing from Ford using a weaksauce rivet. Not seen on a later - probably prior respray where they gutted the door cavity and put back on a cheapo undesized rivet for the lock. Grab handle screws - long to the rear, shorty in the front. A+ work as usual!

That's one of the things I like about Fords. The door panels are usually fairly easy to get off. Had to pull the door panel off my 93 Caprice. It's still not sitting right because I broke 3/4 of those stupid tabs.

I saw one guy, car wizard who learned a long time ago to keep the driver's window down while working on the car so you can't lock the keys in the car by accident. I know that really sucks when that happens. Been there & done that, lol. Thanks for sharing.

The 2 buttons on the bottom of the door are for gas and trunk release. On some town cars the trunk button will close it as well. The buttons on top right are heated seats and driver seat and pedal memory

Eric, love the videos, I'm a mechanic by trade as well, and am fortunate enough to work in a fleet situation where all my tools are purchased for me, and price is not really an issue. I also do a lot of side work from home where obviously every penny counts. I've seen in a few of your videos you mentioned a brand and part number of tools you are using. Would you consider doing a toolbox tour of sorts or tool reviews? I would love to hear and see what tools other than the big brands you use, and how they work for you. Thanks in advance, keep up the great content.

You found SCHLITZ in the carpet? SWEEET! I'mma have to start drinkin' again! :D Boy have those vehicles gone downhill! My Grand Marquis was 25 years old before the first door lock solenoid failed, and 33 years old when one solenoid lost its rivet like that Stinkin' Lincoln did. I still have all 4 original window motors. One of them has 3 lead .45 bullets for the drive mechanism. Works great! :D :D The plastic only recently started getting brittle - within the last 5 years. She's gonna be 35 in a few months! I'd better find her a husband ... ;)
