Linda Gialanella's NY weather report (WNEW 5/8/1980)

The popular and attractive Meteorologist is well-remembered in NYC for her "Weather Cartoons" which she would sketch on-air before each newscast.

For my 60th birthday, Linda sketched a cartoon of my wife and I along with our cat and dog in a golf cart being chased by rain and lightning. The cartoon still hangs on our den wall. . I never knew she was a former Miss New Jersey, my home state.

I never thought I would ever see Linda G. again! Thank goodness for KZbin!!! I was SOOOO in love with her when I was in high school : ). Channel 5 had a great news team in the '70s,with Bill Mazer on sports, John Roland as anchor, Stuart Klein as film critic, Judy Licht as reporter, Bill McCreary and Marian Etoile Watson on Black News every Sat. nite, and of course lovely Linda G. who could thaw the biggest winter chill!! Those were the good ole days!!

I used to watch her and the others (John Roland, Stewart Klein, Bill McCreary, and Bill Jorgsensen) on Channel 5 (now FOX) in New York when I was a kid. She could have made a great living as a cartoonist as well. Also love the bumper music! Thanks for posting this.

As I was telling this story to my wife tonight, I realized I owe Linda G another round of apologies for accidentally splashing her with a bucket of paper mache in 5th Grade at Clinton School in Maplewood NJ when I wildly swung the bucket around and around pretending to be a planet or satellite in the solar system we were making. But when I stopped, the centrifugal force continued, and she got splattered. Perhaps my best imitation of a Calvin and Hobbes routine, although I certainly would never have done this on purpose! Thanks for your quick response and awesome memories! It's funny, I was more of a news junkie as a kid (late 60s, throughout the 70s) than I am now with 24 hour "news" channels with more celebrity drivel and political blowhards than real information. My grandfather raised me on a steady diet of Huntley/Brinkley and later John Chancellor (gramps was partial to NBC News). I was partial to Cronkite and CBS!! But we always agreed on the local news!! We watched ALL the channels: 2,4,5,7,11 and 13!!

I remmber back in the 70s my Mother took me to Macy's to see a cooking demonstration Stewart Klein and his wife were doing (I think they might have done a cookbook together?), all I remember is one of the recipes they made was hot clam dip which tasted very good.

Bob Harris, I have a clear recollection, in terms of time period, was between Tex Antoine and Ms. Gialanella at WNEW. Interestingly, it was around the time of this aircheck that "Dr." Harris first joined WPIX. Mr. Tirado did the weather on the 7:30 "Action News" from the late 1970's into the early 1980's, while Mr. Harris was generally on at 10 (at least initially).

Around 0:06, the one sitting at frame right next to Mr. Roland (i.e. to his left) would appear to be Judy Licht; Bill McCreary was seated to Mr. Roland's right.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but didn't WNEW hire Ms. Gialanella after they fired Bob Harris upon they (and WCBS Newsradio 88) finding out he really wasn't a "Dr." or a certified meteorologist? Besides Linda, there was (on weekends) Cindy Piccoli, and also Doris McMillon did the weather as well for a time.

I am probably wrong, but I seem to remember Tex Antoine doing the weather on Ch. 5 for a short time (after the rape "joke" got him canned at Ch. 7); Linda may have replaced Tex. I seem to also remember Bob Harris doing weather on Ch. 11 (it may have been the 1980s though); don't recall Bob on Ch. 5. As an aside, do you remember Roberto Tirado doing weather at Ch. 11(he may have been there in the 70s)?
