So many people have covered this song & respectfully in their own interpretation, but to me the Great Linda Jones's version is the only one that matters to me. Her passionate heartfelt soul really brings on home to me. Immaculately On Point!!! R.I.P.

No female singer can touch Linda Jones in the Soul stakes. Even Aretha at her testifying best sounds refined next to the sheer emotion this lady emitted - almost (but never quite), losing control. You feel torn up, scorched and sanctified after listening to her sing.

Others Artists also covered the Lieber & Stroller song such as Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey for example and a few others since then......... Jennifer Holiday, & Whitney Houston also sang nice versions but the "Soul Queen" Linda Jones wore the crown for the deepest most soulful version! ~

LOOKING BACK AT : LINDA JONES Soul Singer, Linda Jones Death At 27 Linda Jones died at 27 years and 91 days old on March 14, 1972. Her death was attributed to complications from diabetes which she had suffered from since childhood. Jones was in many ways the epitome of the American female soul singer, with a range and power that made her recordings dramatic, passionate, painful, and cathartic. Her musical style was many years ahead of the times in the genre of R&B, being much more similar to modern singers in her melismatic and histrionic vocalizations and treatments. Unfortunately, she was cut down just when it looked like she might have some degree of success after many years of struggle. This was yet another irony that seems to stick to members of the forever 27 club like glue, and certainly leads one to wonder about the cruelties of fate - or the curse of impending stardom. Jones was born on December 14, 1944, in Newark, New Jersey. Her talents were evident to her musical parents from an early age, and she joined the Jones Singers when she was 6 years old. The gospel group was a source of inspiration and education for the young girl, and she thrived in the unique setting. She undoubtedly learned her approach to singing in this real-life school, since her recordings have many of the hallmarks of gospel - the energy and passion, the choral back-ups, the church-derived instrumental accompaniment. When she was 19 she made her first recording, a song called “Lonely Teardrops,” released with the name of Linda Lane. After a couple of years and labels were unsuccessful for her, she was signed to a subsidiary of Warner Brothers Records, Loma, in 1967 and had her first hit with “Hypnotized.” In 1971 she joined Turbo Records and recorded for them until her untimely death. It was at this promising point in her career that she learned the true nature of the symptoms that had bothered her for some time - diabetes. With some hit singles under her belt and a growing reputation as a powerful and one-of-a-kind female soul stylist, she was appearing at the famous Apollo Theater in New York City. She had gone to her nearby home to rest between an afternoon show and a scheduled evening show when she suddenly lapsed into a coma from the disease that she had only recently learned she had. She died at 27 in the hospital soon after arriving there. She is buried in the Rosedale and Rosehill Cemetery in Linden, New Jersey.

She was a talent, but Aretha was using intricate vocal runs as a teenager in the 1950s, and her vocal elasticity and agility and speed of runs and space like otherworldly sound of the late 60s is unmatched. Linda had a big passionate voice with great head 'whoops' voice but her sound can never compare to Aretha's celestial and awesome sound.

Now, I want to pose this question to everyone listening to these cuts. If you are a Baby Boomer you may be more in tune. Ok, the song by Linda Jones, “ That’s When I’ll Stop Loving You”. This cut says it all. Just pull it up and think a 60-70 reality now a 2000-2019 reality. Just as significant now as it was then. These cuts are coming back because they got into the inner parts of us and today we all need a lot more of that!

This is my opinion its not to take away from Shirley Bassey but if I were to perform this tune I would use Linda's as my measuring instrument. Its personal preference not that one is better than the other.

Not a bad version at all. I honestly don't know what pecart66 is talking about. She maintains pitch well through the song with only a few misses (the first "you" second verse,"girl" third verse). Screaming? Whiney? This is how high pitched female pop voices sound when reaching for high notes. I also am not young, and used to performs (not very well), and have an idea what good is. By the way this is a talk and sing song. Good version by a good singer.

What's all this nonsense about Shirley Bassey recording the "original version"!!?? Ben E. King recorded the original version (in English) of what was initially an Italian song, rewritten by veteran R&B songwriters Leiber & Stoller (famed for their hits with the Coasters etc.), so it's Soul pedigree is assured.
