I remembered this performance from ages ago and it compelled me recently to look for it. Having found it, mostly due to the instrument, the glass harmonica, I am amazed how gorgeous it sounds, especially with the incredible solo by Marsallis, also her gorgeous vocal and that lovely Klimt background. Add to this those incredible back up singers and the whole level of performance from every one involved. An everlasting masterpiece.

I think Ronstadt had the greatest sheer voice in the history of pop music, created by a confluence of circumstances (great physiology, being exposed to classical music and Ranchera music growing up, as well as rock and country, which sort of define what her voice really was, overwhelming power coupled with clarity and beauty with an edge). What I'm always struck by when I hear her live (and I've heard her live in person at least 50 times) is that she NEVER, not once, changed or altered a melody line to make it easier for her to sing (all the "greats" do it all the time). In fact, if she ever did change something it was to make it more difficult and more exciting live (see her live renditions of "Lose Again" vs. the studio version). I'm just glad that with the documentary and Kennedy Center Honor, etc., that people are finally remembering her and she's being put back in the place in history where she belongs. I was with two 20 somethings when I saw "Sound of My Voice" and both of them gasped during the live "Long Long Time" segment. "Why don't I know who she is? That's the best voice I've ever heard."

+TRICK-OR TREAT I just watched Villa version, two of them, and they are NOT better. Ms. Black has no where NEAR the voice Ronstadt had.

Lovely, mi Linda! Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick and many other stellar vocalists have taken this song to its emotional heights. It really needs a fabulous voice to go from the wistful hurt to the crying and outrage. Anyone who had a heart! Linda, you rock.

I’ve never seen this performance. The musicians, her back up girls, and Linda herself are in Top Form. It’s a tricky song and everyone hits it just right. Really Inpressive!

she ripped that out at the end! such a beautiful song and her voice is just so pretty, the clarity and beauty in her tone is undeniable, something about her voice reminds me of Karen Carpenter, such clarity. What a beautiful song, always have loved it!

Karen Carpenter was an incredible vocalist, no doubt about that but in terms of vocal range, power and musical versatility, Linda wins hands down!

Carpenters overall had more hits and deservedly so. The crystal clarity of Karen Carpenters vocals is an outshining aspect that i have not encountered with any other vocalist.

FWIW - Linda and Karen had very different voices. Linda's voice had an almost operatic intensity. Her range was incredibly wide - and only got wider as she expanded her horizons. Karen had that warm, rich alto, an intimate voice of impeccable control. Both singers could be very moving in their interpretations, often in different ways - Linda could also rock and belt - but they shared one thing: they both had incredible pitch. On that front they were musicians as much as singers. I would not compare them: instead, I would appreciate each of them for what they were. Two beautiful voices we'll never hear the likes of again.

well said description and comparison between the two.. and while i love linda, karen to me touched my soul and was the more "unique" singer... karen was the ULTIMATE crooner who sang TO YOU NOT AT YOU...

Wonderful vocal by Linda. One of those demanding Bacharach songs. I love Dusty Springfield's 1960's version of this song.

This is a revelation. I am not convinced anyone betters this version. Linda just "gets" every song she sings and does it such justice. Thank you for posting.

I've always thought this was one of Bacharach's most difficult songs for vocalists. The changing time signature, but the leaps in range make it really tough. The only other singer who could really manage it well was Cilla Black. She had that big voice like Ronstadt.
