I’m really confused. I admit i haven’t watched the whole video yet but now are we supposed to build the bridge? Where do we go to get these new qualifications? So say we had a levels in languages, but we later decide we want to work in medicine, how and where would we actually get the qualifications to become a doctor? I’m 14 btw :).

2:19 - Know what that job and industry are looking for; do your research 5:17 - Find/build the bridge between where you are and where you want to be 8:38 - Make a record of your transferable skills, qualifications and experience 10:34 - Stay on the lookout for new postings and be diligent about applying 12:21 - Make sure you tailor your resume and interview answers for every position

I managed to change careers but only because a friend highly recommended me and I completely bypassed HR. I started a couple of weeks ago and I am learning so much and the workplace atmosphere is friendly and happy. The management is significantly better than my previous job, it makes all the difference in the world.

that sounds like taking on more work for same pay unless your work load is adjusted for the fact that you are taking on new work from another department. otherewise i would suggest just observe the skill or work being performed and then put on resume.

Great advice! Essentially you need to determine the function and industry and then set a clear target and develop a plan to enter. The best way to make this transition is to network, conduct informational interviews, and upskill accordingly.

This is great advice for career transition. A wonderful way to take a peek at other options is to job shadow someone in the role you wish to target. This approach is often really attainable in larger companies. The connection and line of sight to the role is great to get the job seeker setup with really meaningful questions for informational interviews.

A simple formula. A few weeks ago I told my subscribers how to know if it is time to change careers or just a venue in the one you have. So now you know you have to change careers completely. What do you do? How do you decide? In a nutshell I advised to first list all sectors of work fields. IE Medical, social work, law enforcement, business, technology, trades. That gives you the general interest of where you want to be. For example--all business for me is out. BUT, you may love the art of the deal. Then you list the jobs in that sector. IE trades ---electrician plumber mechanic. Business--marketing, finance, stockbroker. Medical--nurse, doctor, physical therapist. This seems simple but it works. You just narrow down sector then narrow down all jobs in that sector. Then you make your plan how to get there. Most people when they want to change careers just go into panic mode. The formula above makes it simple and stress free to see what you want to do next for forty hours a week. Hope this helps---Charles

Hi Linda, I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos and appreciate the great content. I’ve been in the insurance industry for 10 years (salesman 3yrs, client support analyst 6yrs, business analyst 1yr) and have always wondered if my lack of a university degree has kept me from progressing/advancing (and ultimately stuck in the $50-60K salary range). I completed a 3 year BA program in 2010 but did not meet the minimum GPA requirements to graduate. How much weight does an interviewer actually place on education for an applicant who has 10 years experience in the corporate world? I would appreciate any insight/advice you could offer. Thank you.
