Amazing Korean study journey ! I admire you for your dedication and your love for Korean language. Personally, I have started learning Korean for the very first time in 2015, and I am at an intermediate level, got TOPIK 3 a year ago.. I love the language itself, how it sounds etc but I struggle so much in my learning that it’s not enjoyable to learn. I am so tired of learning tons and tons of vocabulary stupidly, and to me the logic Korean grammar is hard to understand.

Exactly. Hangeul is pretty easy writing system, but Korean is very difficult language for people who don’t understand their culture and emotions. Except for Japanese and Mongolians in the same East Asia, most foreigners feel gap in the difficulty between Hangeul and Korean. This also occurs mainly in foreigners learning Japanese.

Great to hear an achievable story...one that took time, breaks, and a few twists and turns. A lot of people on YT are like "Oh I learnt it in 3 easy steps" or "I learnt it in 2 years" and it's not that helpful.

Hey, I started learning in Sep 2022. Hasn't been that long for me but I am trying my best to be consistent, something I really struggle with. Somedays I don't feel like studying at all and I don't even cover anything. I target to study for 2 hours everyday but somedays I can't even do that. I feel listening works way better for me too than reading, reading makes me sleepy, even tutorials. I am a slow learner, always have been, so it breaks my heart to think I have spent so many months already and still struggling to make some basic sentences and how weak my vocabulary still is. I hope to be fluent someday, I really want to. Might take longer for me compared to others, but I don't feel like giving up :) Even I didn't start Korean because of Kpop or Kdramas, I just fell in love with the language and I always wanted to learn a foreign language and I gave up on French and Spanish pretty quickly, and among the Asian languages, Korean seemed the most interesting to me. Hopefully, by the end of this year, I make some progress :)

I currently have no interest in learning Korean, but this was still very useful for just learning about general language learning strategies! So thank you for sharing your journey. One thing I will start doing is keeping a notebook and just writing in it bilingually/trilingually where I substitute words I don't know in Greek for words I do know in another language. I tend to avoid writing about topics I'm not completely familiar with in Greek out of fear that i won't know a word and get stuck, but by avoiding it I will never learn the words I'm missing. So just writing in Greek with what I already know and filling in the gaps with words in English or Dutch might be a very effective way for me to get an insight into what words and expressions I still need to focus on. I will also try shadowing the podcasts I listen to. At the moment my only practice for pronunciation is to use the speech-to-text on my phone's keyboard and it is a disaster more often than a success. Mimicking the podcast and comparing my pronunciation to it will likely improve my skills a bit. Finally, taking notes of words in texts I'm reading is a very obvious one that I hadn't thought about when it comes to reading books. I'm trying to read kids books in a language I took in high school but don't know much vocabulary of anymore and keeping a notebook where I note the words I frequently don't know might help me learn them very quickly. Then I'll probably be able to pick up the language through immersion again quite quickly.

안녕하세요 Lindie! 👋 I started learning Korean about a year ago. I'm a Stray Kids fan! I picked up a lot of words from their live videos and then from kdrama - a lot of the same words are repeated and they have become familiar. I'm not learning consistently so my progress is slow. I still struggle with sentences... (Like you, I say a Korean word and then fill the gap with English 😂) I figure if I learn lots of words / vocab, I will eventually be able to put them together 🤔🤷♀️

Word order is different in Korean. Korean also uses particles and endings. Verbs end sentences. Ni da is a respectful ending. Therefore, you'll hear most sentences end in yo or ni da, except among children or close friends.
