Margaret knew it was the only way to be placed with her dad, there was no room for her to have a proper coffin. Strangely, she remains in the vault, and has not been transfered to King George VI Memorial Chapel, despite KGVI, QE The Queen Mother, QEII and now Philip all lying there. They transferd Philip, why not Margaret?

This was so moving and informative. What did strike me was the number of miscarriages, stillbirths, deaths of children and sometimes their mothers of puerperal fever. I'm going to give my vote to George V and Queen Mary for the nicest memorial tombs. They are tastefully done, the likenesses are good, and visitors hundreds of years from now can have no doubt about who they are or what they looked like during their reign. If only all of history was preserved so well. I do hope King Charles sees to it that a flattering but accurate statue of his mother's likeness is erected in some appropriate place to honor her memory.

I hope so too. I suggest a Mausoleum for the whole Royal House of Hanover. That small King George VI chapel left me thinking that is a rather humble and unworthy resting place for our Queen and her husband. The Tudor dynasty did not last long. It died when Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603. The Stuart's took over but they too also had problems with heirs for succession despite Queen Anne having 17 pregnancies and no living children to succeed. Then her sister Mary took the Throne together with her Dutch husband William of Orange. They too were childless and so ended the Stuart's. What to do now? Look for the nearest blood relative. The Elector of Hanover William was second cousin of Queen Anne and the one in invited to take the throne of Great Britain and Ireland. So began the Hanoverian dynasty. During the first World war King George V wanted to distance the royal family from its German roots and changed the name to Windsor.

I didn't know that as well 😮! It irks me he was buried outside 😤. Let alone was taken far away from his homeland. I wonder besides his parents if he had any other family left. But I guess not 😢. As for the vaults being tourist attractions I think that's an awesome idea 💡😀! It doesn't even have to be every day just periodically like you said. Probably the likely reason they don't do this is because it is supposed to be a final, peaceful, resting place. And it probably feels very disrespectful to them to open the vaults up as attractions 😅. No matter if doing so would no doubt bring in a lot of extra money 💰💰💰. But it doesn't hurt to dream though ☺.

True. Henry VIII left money for a very impressive memorial. I saw the plans. It included an altar for a daily requiam Mass to be offered. Henry took the black marble sarcophagus from Cardinal Wolsey for himself. He never got to be interned in it. Admiral Lord Nelson is in it in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral in London. Henry VIII is entombed in obscurity in a shared vault below the choir area. There is no access for the public. It would seem that none of his three Children saw building his memorial as a priority.

Not quite all to themselves. There some others family members in the vault below. The last one to be entombed in there was Princess Alice Countess of Athlone who was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. I saw her once on RMS Windsor Castle on her way down to Cape Town, South Africa in 1975.

I've often wondered about the one child of Queen Anne's. All those children, all buried at the same place, except this one. It wasn't that they ran out of room, as this was not the last buried. Nor was it the first buried, the eldest, or the youngest. It did not die of plague or under unusual circumstances. I can find nothing out of the ordinary about this child that separates it from the others. Does anyone have any idea why this one child was singled out for a different burial place? I've queried several history groups but no one seems to know...

I wonder if she was screaming for her mother when she was going through the grueling labor. I can't even imagine the terrible pain she went through only to lose this child that she'd so desperately wanted. And on top of that, she ended up bleeding out. I thought it was sweet that her husband, after he remarried, named one of his daughters after her.

My great aunt has been working on the family genealogy for over 30 years, and I remember her telling my earlier this year that he was someone who worked (maybe took care of?) the church, and lived there with his wife and child. They were found buried near Henry VI, I believe, during a renovation in the 19th century. I'll have to ask her about it again, she has all these documents.

Add another lie to Shakespeare's account. Richard III did not kill Henry VI - that was done at the Tower of London on the order of his brother Edward IV after the Yorkist victory at Tewkesbury and was the natural follow-on from the death of Henry's son, also Edward, in that battle.

I wonder if anybody else will ever be named Duke of Windsor? It might be too tainted, even though it's the family name. Some people speculated Charles wouldn't use that name again after Charles I&II, but he stayed with it as king.
@cakt1991

There’s no precedent for it, as it wasn’t a “proper” royal dukedom, like York, Cambridge, Sussex, etc. It was created *for* the former Edward VIII and Wallis. Watching the old film footage of Elizabeth II’s coronation at Westminster Abbey back in 1953, and then watching her final return to that very same spot in 2022, somehow symbolises the journey of life itself. Our late Queen was surrounded by the trappings of her destiny, but within herself she was a simple and virtuous person who recognised her role as one of service and duty, that was the oath she took in 1953 and she remained true to it for 70 years. Watching the Crown, Orb and Sceptre being removed from the coffin was a sobering reminder that whatever station we may hold in life, in the eyes of God we are all equal, and nobody was more aware of that than the late Queen herself; is as equals that we depart this life and go before Him to face our final judgement.
