Congratulations on a splendid explanation of the Line of Succession. I wanted to point out two things: (i) The Reformed Succession to the Crown Act 2013 removed the disqualification of Royal Family members marrying Roman Catholics, thus Royals who had married Roman Catholics, but who themselves had not converted to Roman Catholicsm, were reinstated to the Line of Succession eg HRH Prince Michael of Kent. (ii) Prior to her marriage with Peter Phillips (The Late Queen`s first grandson) in 2008, Autumn Kelly converted to the Church of England, ensuring her husband did not lose his place in the Line of Succession. The Reformed Succesion to the Crown Act 2013 was irrelevant in this instance, as it did not exist.

Defender of the Faith was a title Pope Leo X gave to Henry VIII back in 1521 for his defense of the Roman Catholic Church against the threat posed by Martin Luther. It represented Henry's piety and loyalty to the Church. When Henry broke with the Catholic Church and established the Church of England with himself as its head, he kept the title. It has been passed down to every Monarch since 1544.
@janblackhurst16522 жыл бұрын

@Iluvantir Жыл бұрын
Partially true: The "original" title of Defender of the Faith was given by the pope to Henry VIII, but once he broke with Rome it was removed. A new Title "Defender of the Faith" was given by the newly created Church of England as the Monarch was the defacto Governor of the Church (of England) and the one defending the Church. That is the meaning behind the Title used today. A lot of people get confused about the title, but the "Catholic title" is certainly not in use. It was removed and replaced. Small note: Queen Victoria had no _full_ siblings, i.e. no siblings who had the same mother (Victoria of Saxe-Coberg-Saalfeld) and father (Edward, Duke of Kent & Strathearn) as she did. She did, however, have two half siblings from her mother's first marriage to Emich Karl, Prince of Leiningen, Carl (Prince of Leiningen after his father died in 1814) and Feodora (Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg). Everyone seems to forget about her two (German!) older half siblings, and that she was raised with her first language being German, until John Conroy realised how bad it would look if a future monarch (that they were trying to distance from the licentious, improvident Georgians, aka her grandparents, uncles, &c, who were much hated for being so very German and _"un-English")_ to retain the German-ness, via her accent, that was a calling card of her predecessors. That said, she and Albert preferred to converse in German, as she was very much a native speaker. (People tend to forget that the reason Prussia and all those minor german states and monarchies existed is that Germany is _a lot fekning bigger than the UK,_ especially England alone (because the world seems to forget that Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland are wholeass different countries to England, and "British" is not really an identity-well, it is, but it's like when you realise that "American", whilst usually used to refer to the people of the USA, can technically include any country south of-and including-Canada). Anyway, TL;DR: Victoria wasn't an only child, and please stop claiming she was.

The title "Defender of the Faith" was awarded to Henry VIII by the Pope when Henry wrote a rebuttal to Martin Luther in the 1520s. "Defensor Fidei" was not a title created by Henry VII, he just continued to use it in the Anglican Church and passed it down to protestant rulers.

Lots of English people have some Royal Blood on them. Well, counting how much Charlie #2 and Edward #7 played around, I can believe that. Maybe you should make a video about Charles II and the Girls, and how, even when he didn't have any legitimate children and the crown passed to his brother, his lineage will be reinstated on the throne once William is King as Diana actually descended from one, maybe two, of Charles II's illegitimate lines.

Prince Michael of Kent lost his position in the succession when he married the Catholic Marie (current Princess Michael of Kent). When Queen Elizabeth changed the Letters Patent before the birth of Prince George, the rule about marrying a Catholic was changed which reinstated Prince Michael. However, although someone in the succession can marry a Catholic and retain their place in the queue, no Catholic can be King or Queen.

I watched a series on KZbin recently which you can find by searching "The Father-in-Law of Europe. It follows the line of King Christian IX of Denmark, Queen Margrethe's Great,Great,Grandfather, who's 6 children all married into royal houses all over Europe. It's a fascinating series that follows each of his children's descendants down to the present (or nearly) day. Of course, many of the children's children became Kings or Queens themselves, including Queen Alexandra of UK, Queen Maria Fedorova (Dagmar) of Russia, plus the monarchs of Sweden, Norway, etc. It gets rather confusing, but a genealogical tree, such as you've provided here, would be most helpful. Just an idea for your channel. I've watched the series several times, and it never fails to enthrall, because the descendants tell the family stories in their own words.

An interesting thing is that the “absolute primogeniture” change could have resulted in a very warped system had things been different. As a Commonwealth, each member ‘state’ needed to pass the same laws in their own jurisdiction and had they all not changed their legislation, could have resulted in two different heads of state within the Commonwealth countries (and even states within the same country). Assuming for a moment, Charles, William and George all died in an accident together, we could have ended up with Queen Charlotte in some Commonwealth countries and King Louis in others. I remember a news article how Queensland (Australia) reserved its right as a sovereign state to legislate their own line of succession when it came to abolishing the male-preference primogeniture. Queensland officially joined the rest of the world in 2014 when it adopted the line of succession the rest of the commonwealth followed, but had they not, it could have led to Australia having two different sovereigns.

6:17 I would like to point out, that William IV did indeed have living children, they were just not from his queen, but from his mistress of decades, and as such they were not eligible to inherit. 8:45 Yes, the heir to the Swedish throne is Victoria, and after her comes her daughter Estelle. The next Norwegian monarch will be male, but after him his daughter Ingrid will be Queen. In The Netherlands the heir is Catharina-Amalia. In Belgium the heir is Elisabeth. And in Spain, the last European monarchy with male primogeniture, the heir is Leonor, as she has no brothers. So at this point, we can already predict the next 6 Queens regnant. 25:04 Yeah, between the 13 legitimate children and who knows how many illegitimate, Edward III spread himself around, as did the next many generations. Or as the wiki page on descendants of Edward III states: "According to British geneticist Adam Rutherford, it is "virtually impossible" that a person with a predominantly British ancestry is not descended from Edward III.[2] He has calculated that "almost every Briton" is "descended between 21 and 24 generations from Edward III"." So u dont even need a family tree to claim that 😉
@bonhamcarter44882 жыл бұрын
Former PM David Cameron is a descendant of William IV. Yes but it is mostly nobility and landed gentry that can trace themselves to Edward I, Henry III, Edward III, Henry VII or Charles II.
@kathydurow68142 жыл бұрын
Both my parents are approx. 20th cousins since they both have Edward III as their (unverified) ancestor on their English family sides. Possibly through illegitimate kids, too. This is despite my Mom's heritage being predominantly German and Dad's 50% German/French Huguenot. Someone did a statistical calculation once that basically said everyone in Western Europe could trace some portion of their ancestry back to, say, Charlemagne. Probably if you added the proviso that all your grandparents (or great-grandparents?) were born there, this could be true, with a few exceptional outliers.

in Portuguese peerage 3 female breaks are allowed until the title reverts to the Crown, so - under that rule - Princess Beatrix, Lady Sienna would be Duchesses of York, then, if Lady Sienna only has daughters, her 1st daughter would be the last Duchess of York, but, if she has sons, the dukedom would descend in the male line until a 4th daughter without brothers isn't allowed to inherit it.

I doubt very much that Prince Louis will received the traditional title of the second son of a monarch, Duke of York, given Andrew's legacy. But I'd be willing to bet that Charles III's decision to give the title of Duke of Edinburgh to Prince Edward was a clever bit of future planning. Most likely Edward will have passed on by the time Louis would be thinking of getting married, and as the title will not be inherited by Edward's son, James, that title would be available for Louis instead of Duke of York.
