What I don't understand is, Alfonso's mother warned him about Victoria Eugiene being a carrier of hemophilia and possibly passing it on to her children but he didn't care and married her anyway. Then just to turn around and resent her for that? Horrible

I listened to a podcast about this. Apparently a lot of royals put the status of the family or monarch they were marrying into above their genetic disorders & ran the risk. They would rather have the prestige & disorder than no prestige & no disorder. Also, at the time, they didn’t know as much compared to what we know today with all these genetic diseases.

3:29 That bit of information has bothered me ever since I read about it some years ago. Alfonso XIII absolutely knew that hemophilia existed in the decedents of Queen Victoria and was repeatedly warned not to court Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. But he chose to do so anyway because he was apparently infatuated with her and eventually married her. Then he had the gall to resent her when their son inherited the illness, an illness she had no control over, an illness he knew she could pass on to male offspring. 😑

Maria Cristina of Habsburg was the great-great-granddaughter of Charles III of Spain, and King Victoria and Queen Albert were descendants of the Catholic Monarchs, who are the main line of union of most of the current royal families (the Habsburg branches are Spanish, both the one reigning in Spain and the one reigning in "Austria-Germany", and the Bourbons, both Spanish, French and Italian, were also descendants of Spanish princesses, therefore of Isabel and Fernando).

The place Hohenzollern is indeed a mouthful, but is easier to pronounce if you divide it into two parts: Hohen, and zollern. Hohen is a geographical adjective meaning Upper, as in Upper New York State. Zollern is a place name. When pronouncing it sat Ho-n-zoll- -urn...or ( Hoe)-(hen)- (zoll, rhymes with roll)-(earn, as in earn a living) I hope this is helpful. I love your videos.

You said that King Albert 1 of Belgium fought against the Nazis, that's wrong. He never fought the nazis, He died in 1934 before the Nazis started WW2. He fought against Kaiser Wilhelm 2, Emperor Franz Josep 1, Sultan Mehmed 5 and Tsar Ferdinand 1. They was called the Central Powers and not Nazis.

I mean if you have a European ancestor, there's a theory out there that all Europeans are descendants of Emperor Charlemagne because he lived so long ago

Fascinating. I’d love to hear about Queens of England, like Mary I of England, Anne I of England and Elizabeth II. I’d also like to hear about other Queens of Europe, like Constance of Sicily, Marie of Guise and Anne of Brittany.

Puerto Rico is not independent. Just transferred to American rule from Spain in 1898

None of the Spanish countries mentioned really became independent. The US just made them American colonies. Cuba managed to negotiate independence fairly early. The Philippines were granted independence after WWII, and Puerto Rico is still a colony.

Great video, but just a thing. At 21:15, Emperor Maximilian of Mexico is the bearded man looking down at the couch, not the one standing looking at the camera. Also, he wasn't just appointed but *elected* Emperor. A referendum was held in 1864, where the embattled and bankrupt republic was defeated by a return to the country's original form of independent government -- constitutional monarchy.

Very late comment here, but can’t help but notice how many monarchs abdicated in favor of their heirs and retired. Elizabeth II on the other hand, wouldn’t dream of it, even at 96. What a lady. May she rest in peace.

Idea for another video a tale of two queens, information on the struggles of queen mothers and ruling queen consort. The struggles of previous queens have releasing their power to the next generations like Mary of Teck and Queen Elizabeth (Bowes-Lyon) Windor or (while not queen acted like it) Lady Margaret Beaufort and Elizabeth of York Could totally be a series

How about a video of how many Saints are ancestors of Royalities? I stumbled over that topic when I was bored and traced back every royal house to a Hesse ancestor, as they are all descendants of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia. But I am sure there will be more Saints to be discovered.
