Thanks Lindsay! So different on this side of the pond. There are bass and walleye tournaments (mostly in the US but some in Canada) but no trout competitions that I've heard of in my area (Ontario). Maybe there are some out west where there is more of a cold-water fishery. Locally, in this warm-water fishery, fly-fishing is not common - I might see 1 or 2 fly fishermen in a season. I haven't seen any "personal boats" in your videos, they always seem to be rented. Curious about that, I guess that there are places you can rent boats but like many anglers I've always owned my own. The open water season is drawing to a close - there may be a month left, hope to get out a couple more times before the lakes freeze over. Cheers!

Hi Hank, It is more common in Ireland to own your own boat but most fisheries big enough have boats you can rent.

I fished in my first competition in July. It was a 9 fly competition. Flys where chosen by the fishery owner and kept a secret until the morning of the event. Great fun with a fairly level playing field due to the limited fly selection.

You can do it just put feelers out to find out where your local club is.

Lindsey they used to run competitions in British Columbia and western Canada. I had the chance to go to one, but I ended up having to attend to a more urgent matter so I missed it. This was the last time I was to have a chance. I have had several thoughts brought about by the lack of people involved in well, pretty much everything. I started a national charity for wounded vets and it is still going pretty strong. I think we could possibly handle a club here in the Fort, there is one in western Edmonton but it is a long drive So I would hope to pick up a few: members who find winter driving too far to go in .

Comp fishing is great fun you just have to remember at the end of the day it is only fishing. I have met life long friends through competition fishing and learned a ton!

Great vlog with a wide range of relevant info. Noticed the rule of “P” was adjusted for family and civilian consumption. Lol. I would add practice, perception, and persistence. That one moment you stop concentrating. That is when you miss the take, or mess up.

A good video - although I am not a massively keen competition angler the point made about fishing with more competent / experienced anglers is well made and I have learned so much from others to the improvement of my general fishing - for me the social side of matches is equally important meeting up with long standing friends from other teams and enjoying a beer and a pie afterwards - I limit myself to 5 or 6 matches a season as I mainly river fish - it always amuses me the amount of tackle we all cart onto the boats - much of it never to see the light of day but there just in case - on a river it all goes in my pocket !!!!

It is the best learning tool out there and even if you don't get the buzz from competition you can always take a few tips away with you. Thanks for watching and commenting.

No such clubs or competitions here, on my side of the pond but interesting none the less! Do you ever fish streamers on the point with a wet dropper 2 feet or so above the streamer? I strip these in pulses…a couple of feet, pause for a few seconds and repeat…this has caught me thousands of trout over the years fishing for Browns, Land Locked Salmon, Brook Trout and Sea Trout! Tight lines! 😊

I am sure most teams would welcome new anglers whatever their experience - over 35 years I have only ever been with one boat partner I wouldn't want to fish with again - they will help out less experienced anglers even to the point sometimes of sharing successful flies - you've nowt to lose and lots to gain - give it a go.
