Hello, friends! Today I'm taking you into another part of my world - into my second grade classroom! Looking back it's fun to see how much I've accomplished since first walking in after summer construction. What do you think of the results? Please share with any teachers in your life looking for design ideas. 😊

I love what you did. My kids would have been in awe of a classroom like this. The details that you put in to every little section really show. It’s so wonderful to see a teacher putting that time in to their room for the students.

I'm not a fan of so many colors, but you have captured me with your creative designs. It is the loveliest classroom I have encountered. I love that you had so much autonomy, the district had our entire school painted a subtle mustard yellow/gold. If we painted our classrooms they would have a stroke! Despite that, you have given me so much inspiration for my classroom setup. Thank you. Be blessed.

Thank you so much! I'm well aware how unique my situation is - I have never been able to paint in a classroom during the many years I've been teaching until now. Grateful for a principal and director that appreciate my vision and support what I want to do for kids. Wishing you luck and creativity on your own classroom design. Designing classrooms is one of the most fun design projects I've had the pleasure of doing.

This is the product of 13 years of experimentation and it’s definitely evolved a lot as I’ve been able to save and purchase more furniture and decor. Take it one step at a time - you will create something amazing for your students! 🤩

I wish I could read your "Class Charter." It looks meaningful and sets a great stage.
@LindsayLiving
@LindsayLiving Жыл бұрын
The Class Charter is a concept that comes directly from the RULER program developed at Yale. The program was created to support students' social/emotional needs at school and teaches a variety of strategies. Each Class Charter is completely unique to each group of students - written by them - to express how they want to feel when working together and the action steps we will all take to help each other feel that way every day in our classroom. You can read more about the RULER program for schools here: medicine.yale.edu/childstudy/services/community-and-schools-programs/center-for-emotional-intelligence/training/ruler/

Thank you so much for posting a classroom makeover video! I am pleasantly surprised to find out you're a teacher! I have been watching your design videos for a while now and as a kindergarten teacher myself, I screamed to see you uploaded a classroom video! 😄 I enjoyed it so much, I hope you can post more of these, even if it's just more classroom organization tips, I'm sure it'll still be relevant to even organizing a kids room. Thanks again! ♥️

Green tones tend to be relevant for natural, terrestrial studies such as botany although black and white schemes tend to be relevant for astronomical studies while blue and white tends to be relevant for aquatic studies. Of course, decorations such as stickers, shells, rugs, lamps, furniture, ceiling ornaments and items further emphasize their subjects. However, such renovations may need to be reserved for specified areas for long term use.

Your room is adorable! I often wonder if teachers truly like the "desks in a round" setup that is the standard today for elementary classrooms. I'm in that generation that still all faced the teacher from our individual desks. What's your opinion? Is it harder to keep kids' attention with today's setup or do you feel there's little difference?
@LindsayLiving
@LindsayLiving 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, Sara! That's a great question. I much prefer table groups as opposed to desks in rows. I always remind my students - we don't have one teacher and 22 students, we have 23 teachers and 23 students in our classroom. We have to discuss our ideas and learn from each other along the way. Groups foster partner learning and group learning. It's really classroom management skills and established routines that skilled teachers use to make all grouping situations work for student learning. If your lesson is truly as inspiring as it should be and students have the supports they need, and they are given adequate breaks throughout the day, they should be deeply engaged in their learning. 😊

I’m a retired Canadian teacher. Your classroom looks amazing, so many resources! I’m wondering, do you have to pay for a lot of your materials? It varied school to school when and where I taught. Salaries aren’t great (better in Canada I believe) so it was a sticking point for many. Hope you’re having a great year with wonderful kids.

Thank you so much! Yes, I've purchased nearly everything you see here other than chairs, desks, and curricular materials. I've invested a lot in my career/classroom for my students. I wish it wasn't necessary to do so.

Hahahaha! Right?! That is the appropriate response. My jaw hit the floor when I came in and saw this was the "building refresh" plan they didn't exactly make clear to us. Breaks my heart they do this to historic school buildings like mine.

I'm sorry for asking about this Miss, about all the things that you put in the classroom are bought by your own money or its all from school?
@LindsayLiving
@LindsayLiving Жыл бұрын
Nearly everything was bought with my own money. Items furnished by my school/district in this video are the student desks and chairs, the group table, presentation station, computer and projector, easel, my teacher desk and the shelf behind it, and the curricular materials (teacher's guides and trade books, science kits, etc.). Everything else including the bookshelves, library full of books, other organizational furniture, all the decor, and a lot of learning tools and manipulatives, craft supplies, everything were provided by me.

you are VERY lucky to have a HUGE enormous room. Our classroom are less than 1/2 your classroom size.
@LindsayLiving
@LindsayLiving Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right! I was shocked at the size of this room when I moved in back in 2019 in comparison to other schools and classrooms I had worked in previously. I find the older the school the larger the classrooms - in my area at least. Schools built in the 1980s and after have much smaller classrooms due to an increase in school populations.
