(Fortunately I managed to avoid most of her UPPER body injuries!) We've taken sports to extremes that the human body will only tolerate for a certain amount of time. A guy weighing 300 pounds may be strong and quick, but his joints and cartilage don't know or care that it's muscle, only that it's extra stress. I trained in the gym of a guy that was a world champion powerlifter in the late 70s. He spent the last ten years of his life in major pain in multiple places. He died at 61 from a heart attack.

oh how I love her candidness and honesty. Let me tell you where you will be 20 years from now. I am 60 years old. I have been an extreme athlete all my life. In high school I was a gymnastics champion, then I moved on to motocross, became the women's national amateur motocross champion in 1980. I severly broke my left leg and had many crashes that began damaging my knees, tearing miniscus and cartilage. Then I became a aerobics champion winning the coors light national contest and was a finalist at the crystal light national championships and got my certification for teaching aerobics. In the years between motocross and aerobics, I surfed and skied. my love for skiing won out and moved to Tahoe in 1989 where I began to commit my life to the ski industry. I got all my certifications through PSIA and taught for years and that was what finished my knees off. small falls that seemingly felt not that big of a deal, tearing more miniscus, what was left in my knees. Pretty soon, I was bone on bone. my left knee was first. I had it replaced in 2010. it was a great success. Then my right knee was bone on bone. I had it replaced in 2016 and that was when my nightmare began. It got infected to the point I went septic. I have had 4 knee replacements on my right knee. I will never be the same athlete again. My life has been compromised. I guess I am lucky to be alive and that I have both my legs, but there are days that I miss being able to play and be the athlete that I used to be. I ride an e mountain bike and only ski groomers because I'm afraid of falling or having other people running into me. I know your world of pain. If I can give you any advice its this: you will know when your ready for knee replacements. You cannot live with the pain any longer and that is when you go get them replaced. once you go down that route, gear back on how hard you play. Take care of your knee replacements. that is the compromise. I have followed your career and truly admire you! take care of your body now.
@larrygilman88963 жыл бұрын
I had my left knee replaced 13 years ago and after a scar tissue cleanout due to the prior surgeries, it's been terrific. I'm 64 now and recovering as we speak from having my right knee replaced. It's low impact, great exercise, and allows me to compete. I wish you all the best.

When we're young we don't quite understand what excess sports training and competition does to us later on. There is no way to prepare for it. I heard an athlete once say the body is like a bar of soap. You use it and it wears down. I lifted weights fanatically in my teens and early 20s and I'm on a first name basis with multiple orthopedic surgeons.
@Fit_AF_1233 жыл бұрын
Was it the lifting or the lifting technique?

@@Fit_AF_123 I always was conscious of using good , slow form in free weights because I'd seen some of the powerlifters blow out pecs and damage backs to the point of surgery or being down months before resuming. When I was pre-fatigued from the free weight benches,squats and deadlifts I would do the smaller muscle groups on machines. I also used lighter weights with higher reps on everything so I never really knew what I could max. The surgeon that did my shoulders was a sports medicine specialist that told me that the wear-down factor will show regardless of weight used and that the human body wasn't designed for the level of physical stress modern man hits it with. He added that while that was his belief, it was hard to preach on what was making him wealthy, lol.

I shattered the radial head into more than 50 pieces in my elbow due to a cycling accident. Long story but I essentially hit a concrete wall head on doing about 35 mph. The doctor said he stopped counting the pieces at 50 & screwed the bone back together as best he could. When I saw him afterwards, he said I would be extremely lucky if I could straighten my arm & I would get minimal use from it. I asked about doing rehab efforts on my part & said is it possible to get it back to normal & he said it is remotely possible but the pain would be too much to bear as it would take months at maximum effort. Right about month 7-8 I had a post op visit & he broke out his protractor to see how much progress I had made in my rehab. His jaw dropped as I had not only completely straightened my arm but my use of it was over 80% (today I have 100% use of it & I don’t even notice any handicap with it). He asked me how I did it & I said I simply did what you said was possible & never even considered it to be impossible & used the pain as a positive sign & measuring device because it meant I was progressing
