My ex criticised my handwriting at one point in time and now I write very stiffly. I've decided I'm going to go back to the basics and start from scratch. I especially have problems with letters that have a hump, ie. 'm', 'n', 'h'.

Dear Lindsey, as a matter of fact you‘ve become my teacher for about 8 years now. I started learning with you out of two reasons: I wanted to calm down, come back to myself after a burnout or in the course of one. I’m now 2 weeks post surgery and ready to begin in earnest. My initial goal was to improve the legibility of my cursive scribble. This began as I recalled my grandfather’s fountain pen and wished I had access to his fountain pen. He was a high school chemistry/physics teacher whom I have always admired. At 79 I realized how much my script had deteriorated. I entered the world of fountain pens. I discovered my favorites to be Waterman Expert and Parker 51. Now it’s time to move into improving the legibility of my cursive. Ultimately my goal is calligraphy. Your recommendations would be?

Definitely rest them! That can be a problem for lefties, who might have to fight to keep their hand under what they're working on; but for righties, that's normally not a problem.

What you said about graphology is not correct. There are certain characteristics that show through your handwriting no matter what kind of mood you are in; eg how and where you generally dot your ’i’ or the stroke or loop of your ‘g’ and ‘y’, how round, oval, square or angular your writing is, how large or small the handwriting is, the slant of your handwriting etc etc. Even how hard you press on the paper is telling.

I find a rollerball is better to write with than a biro. The ink is wetter and allows the tip to flow across the paper more easily. It allows me to relax my hand. I take a lot of notes and my wiring can get messy. Good quality paper is also a big help.

When I was in grade school, we were taught ovals and up-and-down strokes. (I know, stone age and catholic school). I had beautiful handwriting. But now, from being on a laptop or a phone it has gone by the wayside. I have trouble writing "m" and "n". I'm not sure how many loops there are in each letter! It's frustrating when I handwrite cards; forget about a handwritten letter! I'm happy I found your channel to help me. Thanks!

I have been a hard pen-clutcher for most of my life, and after a while writing, my hand gets sore. When I try and relax it, I lose control over the shape and placement of my letters. Well, … how do you teach a 7 th grade student cursive? You turn to Lindsey. She has answers for everything and even did a set of woodland characters I requested. I actually bought this course and have worked my way through about half of it. I love the "why" of the exercises and understand I am supposed to repeat the actions. thank you for this. I’m 20, learned cursive in kinder and first grade but then they took it out of schools. This really helped as my handwriting varies dramatically. Do you have any tips for changing from left to right hand writing? Also, pen selection and grip for large hands? I feel like in a "normal" grip my palm is almost facing down instead of out.

Hi Josh! If you're transitioning from left to right hand writing, I'd start by practicing basic strokes and letter formations to familiarize yourself with the new writing direction. (A worksheet like this one -- thepostmansknock.com/catalog/improve-your-print-handwriting-worksheet/ -- could really help with that.) Take it slow and be patient with yourself. As for pen selection, look for pens with a comfortable grip and ink flow that suits your writing style. For individuals with larger hands, it's important to find pens with wider barrels or ergonomic designs to ensure a comfortable grip. Alternatively, you could try buying some pen grips on Amazon to make the grip larger, which could make a huge difference! After you've found a pen that works for you, experiment with holding it different ways and at various angles to find what feels most natural for you. If your palm feels too close to the paper, try adjusting your grip so that your palm faces slightly outward, allowing for a more relaxed writing position. Remember, practice makes progress; take it slow, and if you start to get discouraged, call it a day so you can start fresh later. Happy writing!

My late grandmother heard the same! I loved her handwriting, though. It leaned to the left and was full of personality. Whenever I come across it, usually when going through old photos or papers at my mother's house, I always pause and feel a little bit closer to her. :) Handwriting is SO powerful, no matter how you write!
