I'm a girl and I have a hard time around women too, not in an obnoxious "too cool for women" way, they just make me nervous and my social skills aren't very good so it's hard to talk to people who don't share my interests (which I find girls are less likely to do). I still like girls though, they're just very much the minority in my friendships. That being said I think the testing thing you complained about is a lot less common in my generation, I've certainly never done it.

Sounds like your experience with the "woman that ruined the event" has nothing to do with being a woman. It has to do with her not being a war gamer with a shared history in the group. I'm a biologically female gamer who has not had a dissimilar experience. As a gamer, most of the friends I made in university were men, but there were a couple of other women. When we are all together as our mixed group, even after years of living geographically far apart now, with shared history and shared interest, it's like nothing changed. If someone brings a spouse or significant other, be it a woman or a man who is the new person, it changes the environment. Of course it does. It's just a simple matter of in group/out group

Maybe the example wasn't perfect, but from my experience, and most of my male friend's experiences, A single or more females do change the group dynamic drastically. Even when the women are part of the same friend group, when it's only guys there is a big difference. I would even say that often an out group male has a smaller impact than an in group female.

I am a 17 year old boy who goes to an electrical engineering high school which is like 99% boys (just like a medical school would be probably mostly girls). We have 2 girls and 29 boys in our class and naturally the two of them formed a close friendship. Us guys go wild when they aren't there and the atmosphere is much more relaxed and everyone is having a great, fun time. As soon as the girls come in, everybody quiets down and the fun is over. Even if the female is very unattractive, she will bring sexual tension an irrelevant or boring conversation with her, which just doesn't work with guy-gatherings.

Being unable to communicate is not a "women" problem, it's a "dumb" problem. I have been around women who know exactly how to properly communicate, I have been around (and myself have been at some point in my life) men who are absolutely clueless in communicating.

As a woman... I would always pick men. They are much easier for me to understand as well. And men don't usually care what type of shoes I'm wearing. Or a group with maybe 2-3 women and 10 men, but only under some circumstances.

That Jane Austen thing made me think... I don't actually know how women talk to each other when they're on their own. Now I'm imagining when they go into the bathroom in a club together they may as well be talking in an alien code that no man understands and we'll never know.

This also puts a rather interesting spin on the Bechdel test. Since most films are made primarily by male directos, screenwriters, etc., their experiences only extend to male-male and male-female interactions. It may not be an explicitly held policy, but perhaps there is some subconscious effect.

I absolutely agree with everything said in this video - especially the part about women using apparently-honest inquiries instead of using soft imperatives. Is it really so hard to say "I'm kinda thirsty. Can we grab a drink somewhere?", as opposed to "Do you want to get something to drink?"? Women can be amazing company (often superior to male company), but this required "extra vigilance" is tiring.

I guess that I am in a very dangerous position, because currently I have absolutely no friends of either sex. Work and my dog eat up the vast majority of my time. I need to get out more! The accent thing is interesting and I do not notice much difference in accents here in New York. But, annoyingly, I do see that very often, attractive, youngish females tend to candy coat their speech and intentionally sound childlike around men whom they wish to get favors from. But when there are no men around, their speech loses that quality and when I recognize it and bring it up, I acknowledge while pointing it out with pride that I am in ‘the club’.

Lloyd is so charming and honest! :) I like the fact that he doesn't have this horrible idea that "men and women can never be friends" and that men who are friends with women are only being manipulatively friendly for sexual reasons. Men and women both change their behavior in the presence of the other gender, but I think there's more of a behavioral change in men. Having observed men in their natural habitat, I've come to the conclusion that there's generally a "male atmosphere" when men group up, that seems to make men act a little more "macho" then they normally would in everyday life. Putting a woman into that equation...it's probably like dropping an ice cube down your shirt. Of course, I think it depends a bit on the activity too. Women like to be around men though, for the same reason men like to be around men. It's a lot more relaxing, and you don't have to worry about what other women are thinking or feeling. The social politics of women can be exhausting. On the other hand, I've had a few guy friends who have hung out with myself and my female friends, and that is almost always a blast - for males and females alike, I think.

The better hypothetical is a woman saying "it's cold in here" and the man does nothing, because the woman just made an observation. Whereas if the woman said "can you get me a blanket?" or "can you turn up the heat on the thermostat?" the man would leap to his feet and do it with utmost vigor and joy. Women don't want to impose because they're polite, but men want to serve a specific order with explicit criteria, which leads to miscommunication and dissatisfaction which can only be resolved by both parties learning to adapt to the other.

growing up, I always preferred the company of women... but in recent years, I have found I just am not welcome among women like I used to be. It isn't that I'm awful or creepy or anything either, I've asked, it just seems like there's some kind of unspoken distance they kind of adopt in their 20's. It really sucks, I miss my girl friends. But, on the plus side, I've been accepted and adopted as it were into groups of male friends, and it's actually... really nice. I never noticed how utterly insane women can be, and how much I'm on edge in their company. This isn't meant to be disparaging either, it's just like they're a different species, and I've come to appreciate the relaxing nature of male company. I mean, I don't have to prove myself, or have opinions on people, or justify my existence. Also... there's something about the way they think too that is just so irrational. Again, not a rule, but there seems to be a lack of regular deep contemplation, whereas my time with other men tends to be really deep, affirming, and philosophical. My experience trying to talk to women in the same manner is usually met pretty poorly, either they just don't care, or their opinions are so entwined with their identities that they can't even really discuss them. It's been a weird drift, and like I said, I miss girl friends, but I am grateful for my new male ones.

Dragon50275 I think the point is that we *don't* distinguish and respect the differences between the two species enough. We force this completely un-based notion that men and women are the same, or that they are both equally capable of parity of the other. The fact remains, men and woman *are* different, and that's a good thing.

I find that the type of activity tends to determine how people act towards each other more than gender. Most of my hobbies are weapon-based martial arts or weapon sports, pretty much all involving mixed groups, and I've never really noticed the female participants behaving differently than the male participants. Maybe it's the shared respect between individual shooters/fighters - the adage that an armed society is a polite one seems to hold true for small/mid-sized groups, at least. Or maybe its the type of people these activities attract. At the same time, however, I was the only male child in my generation and grew up around a lot of women my own age, so I'm a lot more comfortable around women than men, and my own experiences might be skewing my perceptions in that regard.
@tomewyrmdraconus837
@tomewyrmdraconus837 6 жыл бұрын
The problem is that we're positively discriminating. We have to invite women because if we don't we're wrongly excluding them... why exactly? If we quit playing up the differences between men and women we wouldn't have to worry about the societal pressure to integrate, because most groups would be mixed. If you then want to make a men-only or women-only group? Who cares? If you want an all-female group of car nuts, or an all male sewing club, who gives a damn? If you want a weekly mixed-gender basket weaving or basketball group, more power to you. The problem arises when you FORCE people to do things, instead of just demonstrating by example that they're being obtuse. Girls play with dolls, girls like shopping, boys like cars, boys watch sports. Quit intentionally segregating people "because tradition", and what do you know? People quit having so many differences with which to create conflict via "otherness". If you like hunting, wouldn't you like to hang out with men and women that like it too? If you like shopping for clothes, wouldn't you like to bring enthusiastic men and women for a broader opinion?

I don't really see women wanting to be "one of the guys" that way. I've had similar experiences with guys being introduced to a group and wanting to fit in. I also know quite a few women who really just act like one of the guys, they don't try really hard to fit in or want to be seen as special in some way. I personally don't really have a preference, it would depend more on the (type of) person than their gender. That is also the reason why I really dislike groups that only allow people of a specific gender. From my experience (which is mostly with guys), it's always the socially insecure guys who find it so important that women are not invited, being afraid that they will lose their masculinity (or that they can't talk freely anymore) when women are around. I can't really speak for how it goes for groups of women, since it's of course not a real women-only thing if I'm there as well. I don't think groups shouldn't be forced to allow the other gender to join though. People won't feel welcome if you force a group to let them in, and the group will never truly accept them as one of their own.

Okay, so without trying to start a war, you're almost right about "Do you want to open a window". We totally mean "Open the window", but it's not a test. It's not "Will he actually do it??" it's just us trying to politely tell you what we want you to do, so if you don't then do it, it feels like a slight, but in reality it's likely just a miscommunication. You could make the argument "Why don't you just say what you mean", and that's ultimately a pretty complex issue, but ultimately I believe the answer would be "Politeness" or "we probably just should, shouldn't we?"

I am glad that I am part of a generation and social environment where gender and sex don't matter nearly as much any more. Sure there are certain topics I prefer to talk about with members of one sex or gender than the other, but honestly it doesn't matter like 99% of the time. I choose my friends based on common interests and how well we click with each other on a mental level. Generally speaking, my friends tend to be the weirdos and freaks of the world, the outsiders and misfits, the type of their chromosomes doesn't affect that ;) Also, for sake of completion: I do have a few friends and aquaintances that are non-binary.

G'day, AHOY...., Calling Lloyd ! Today at the local ANZAC Day Service I saw & videoed a sight which I suspect you'll want to see and enjoy ; the Catafalque Party were carrying BEIGE-PAINTED WEAPONS, on Parade. I posted it an hour before you posted this Video, and to find it then title-search YT for, "Australian Army Steyr Assault-Rifles, In Beige !" it runs for 30 seconds, and I got them to line up, in the Sun, in front of the Cenotaph... I go, now, to upload the 10-minute almost speechless coverage (jump-cut in realtime on the Pause-Button..; Edited in Camera, shot in sequence...) of the ANZAC March, Parade, Jet Flyover, Last-Post, Recital of the Ode to the Fallen, & a stunning young Soloist singing Oz' National Anthem (unaccompanied by any Instruments or recordings)..., featuring as many close-ups of the Sandy-Beige Steyers as I could get away with... I suppose that if the RAF used to fly Spitfires painted Pink for Photo-Reconnaisance (yes, they actually did...!), then Oz can paint it's Assault-Rifles Beige, the better for shooting at the Taliban (or ISIL one supposes ?). Have fun, ;-p Ciao !

My "Observer's Insight" into young women (like your Dirty-Dancing episode) was when I unpacked my stuff in my new room on the top floor of the Nurses' Home where I was starting work as a Student Nurse, there were 33 rooms on the Top Floor, and I was one of 3 men ; so I walked into the TV Lounge & there I discovered over a dozen 18 - 22 year old ladies (I was 19...), all in their short frilly Nightdresses, some wearing Dressing-Gowns - and ALL of them were knitting or crocheting or sewing, and ALL of them were making Baby's Clothes....(!). It rather recalibrated my underconstumbling of what I'd previously regarded as frivolous & intense transient affairs, when I realised that in their spare time the single women were all making & stockpiling Clothes for the Babies which they expected and hoped to have. What you said about Accents & young men vs young women, and young pretty women vs the plain ones...; that is a fascinating observation, thanks for sharing. Have a good one, ;-p Ciao !

I remember an episode from when I was in school. We had just finished swimming practice and one of the teachers wanted me to help remover the floating separators (don’t know the proper name. String with balls of some light material) and instead of asking me to do it she said, “If you take that one”. I just looked at her and then asked “yes, then what?”. Of course I got some flak for talking back. In hindsight I can see that it was just a way for her to tell me she wanted me to take it, but at the time I saw it as a half-finished question like “what would happen if I took that one”.

There's nothing inherently wrong with either of those things tho. It really depends on the person. You shouldn't imagine the radical internet personalities as the base, they are all outliers and exaggerations. Caricatures one would say. If you use the internet parodies of groups as their most basic average standard then you will have a bad time no matter what group you are talking about.

wives are also much happier if their husbands prefer to hang out with the guys. Like when you split up with a woman, and stay friends, a wife might not like it. Same reason husbands like to be in charge of hiring the wife's footman.

Your reaction to ‘would you like to open the window’ is so interesting to me. Because from the woman’s perspective she is only trying to be polite, and you’re refusing seemingly because she went through the trouble of being polite. It’s not that I don’t believe you but it’s so odd to me that you insist you don’t understand such an obvious question (from the female perception at least). I do recognize the event though, and I would usually get upset as well because I would assume that the man could understand me perfectly well but was being willfully unhelpful by using the technicalities of the wording against me. An important thing though is that (at least for me) this question is not a test at all, it’s just trying to be polite. I personally find it quite difficult to be completely direct and say something like ‘do this now!’ because I feel like that would be too pushy or rude.

"Would you like to open the window" comes off as somewhat rude in my view. It's a way of asking without really asking. If you for instance were eating a bag of chips and I, instead of asking normally approached you and said "would you like to share some of those?" I doubt you'd interpret that as very polite. I do think the situation in the video is less obviously rude than my scenario, but there are much nicer ways to ask for something.

Spend less time stereotyping based on gender and more time getting to know the individual. Don't assume the full extent of someone's personality is revealed within that first meeting where they're adapting to their company. Often the behaviour of the people around reflects your prejudices because you yourself treat people in different ways based on your preconceptions. When you expect women or men to be certain way, you are soliciting that exact behaviour. Also (what follows is a generalisation not intended as the sole truth but an explanation to help clarify some aspects), there are reasons why women "beat around the bush" and it's not just because we want to inconvenience you or be difficult to be around. These are often survival mechanisms in a cultural atmosphere where you have to be very mindful of the other people around you causing you to develop social strategies that can become convoluted in their complexity to ensure your safety within the group or to keep the peace. Often our society forces women to fit into certain moulds, be a certain way and the negative aspects you have described are a byproduct of the strict expectations that women have to meet. The reason I find these "accusations" that women beat around the bush and test other people so frustrating and even unfair, is because it's the product of years of having to hone your social skills to fit in, keep the peace, be safe around people who might be aggressive towards you, be amiable and ensure you do not end up in company that can get you into trouble because very rarely you will have the physical upper hand or a capability to defend yourself. The social skills you develop are what keep you and the people around you safe when you can't protect yourself or others by force.
@Napukettu
@Napukettu 6 жыл бұрын
So yes, I do sometimes prod and test to see if the company I keep is safe to be around. I especially want to see if they will be arsed to make the same effort as I do to be polite, kind, helpful and understanding. And in some cases just to gauge if you're generally like-minded. Granted when you've had to learn to be considerate from early on, it's not such a huge hassle to keep it up. It becomes a habit. It's a way to constantly communicate to the other person that you care about getting along with them. Oversimplifying it again, but if you grow up in an environment where you don't really have to care or learn these things and you can fall back on brute force or privilege to get your way, of course it's going to seem like a hassle to have to deal with. But consider for a second that you are a person with certain privileges (even if you may simultaneously be underprivileged in other ways). Don't treat someone like a nuisance just because they did not grow up with the same privileges and had to learn a different way to cope.
@Napukettu
@Napukettu 6 жыл бұрын
Oh, and this is just a little theory I sometimes entertain, but I feel like often the people who complain about the personalities of women are the people who are most visually focused and only interested in the most attractive selection of women. This is a gross generalisation (again X'D), but often the people who look the best don't have as much of an incentive to hone their social skills and when you receive things with more ease, there's less of an opportunity to develop your personality or character. If you want to find great, interesting, wonderful, honest, straightforward people, maybe stop looking at what people look on the outside and spend more time getting to know them. And as a final tip: You can receive from a relationship only as much as you are willing to put in. So if you go in to a relationship expecting the other person to cater to your needs so you will fall in love with them (as a partner or just a platonic friend), prepare to be disappointed. It's a known fact that the more you yourself invest into something, the more valuable it becomes to you. So put in that extra effort to put up with other people and you might be surprised by what you will receive in return.

"Do you want to open the window?" used in that manner Lloyd describes towards the beginning of this video is actually a passive-aggressive order, as he has (perhaps unconsciously) identified. Call anyone who does this out on their shit and tell them to ask politely and directly if they want something. The situation he describes, where someone "tests" you, and then if you fail, gives you a "punishment", is a form of emotional abuse used to bully and enforce control over someone. Source: am reformed passive-aggressor. Don't stand for this sort of thing from anyone, it's pretty toxic.

OP UPDATE Looking back on this, I think sometimes the behaviour is truly a passive-aggressive order, but sometimes it's a passive-aggressive request or suggestion from the speaker, or even just a genuine question of your thoughts/feelings. When I wrote my first comment I was pissed off with passive aggression in my life. If someone gets pissed off because you gave them a straight answer to a question like this, I'd hazard a guess it'd be because (from their perspective at least), you didn't take their feelings into account. It is an indirect strategy, I maintain an immature one and unfair for the asker to be upset by a straight answer to, but very common all the same. I'm a bit older and wiser now, so when someone asks me something in this way, I give them an honest answer (because that is what they asked), and follow up with something to confirm the nature of the situation, and determine their motivation behind asking the question. E.g. "Hey, do you wanna stop for food on the way home?" "Nah I'm good thanks, why, are you hungry?" Then proceed as appropriate based on their response to that reversal. So far it seems to work pretty well in managing all situations. And, if they were really trying to say that they want to stop, I'll usually gently tease them a little for not just asking directly too 😂

Maybe that's a cultural/language thing. But in Germany, in almost all cases, women just say "Could you please open the window?" if that's what they mean. We do have that stuff as a meme. "Male/Female Dictionary" and stuff like that. But that's more cheeky stuff along the lines of "women always mean the exact opposite of what they say". Could also be just a generational thing. Anyway, never experienced that in real life.

If I guy asked me to do something, I just tell him to move his ass and do it himself lol. Things like opening a window that is. Not if any special skill or knowledge I have be he doesn't. I do agree with half of what you say. About what how females are viewed and what is expected of them. But why would this lead to such a rhetoric? Especially the stereotypical "helpless female" should be allowed to just ask for shit. "Could you please open that jar of pickles (I'm too weak)", "could you please get me that thing up there (I'm too short to reach)" Every stereotype has it's truth to it and as those do indeed exist here in Germany, I guess it at least used to be the same. Or still is with older people. Never encountered it with girls/women my age and not my mom either. Or a regional thing. People in my region are said to be a little bit too straight forward for comfort anyway. But like I said, I don't get the reasoning behind it.

I do think it's a rather English thing- whether that's the language or the country, I'm less sure (even though I live in Canada, I honestly don't remember if I hear that wording here or only online) There's a certain tone you ask with that differentiates it, I think. Saying "Do you wanna pass the salt?" sounds quite different from "Do you wanna go to a restaurant for lunch?", as it's asking for a favour rather than asking for an opinion

Letum he's not saying he hates women or wouldn't want to be around them, just that for some activities it's more fun if it's just men. Which is fair enough - I don't see why this should offend. I do think it's quite sad that men feel the need to tone themselves down or interpret everything when a woman is around. Likewise that women feel they must be "on show" when there's guys around. It would be nice if men and women could drop some of the pretense and just be themselves around each other.

If someone brought a friend or paramour to that situation that was male, but not really experienced in war games and also was a bit eager for approval, same thing probably would have happened (and it's also no doubt possible to find a woman who has never had any interest in wargames but actually does have a knack for it and picks the whole thing up easily and integrates well).

It's so entertaining to watch the inner battle between women and hanging out with the guys raging in his mind! He's having such a difficult time making any decisions whatsoever! We might have finally found a way to break him!

It's part of the human duality really. Yin and Yang. Every man needs a bit of woman to balance himself, and every woman needs a bit of man to balance herself. Quite a pity that circumstances force the issue that men are denied their masculinity and women are told to embrace masculinity as though it were oxygen.

I've watched this video yesterday, and today my wife asked me "Do we want to order dinner from that Asian restaurant in town". Not really feeling the appetite for curry, I've honeslty said "No". Guess what, WRONG ANSWER. Lesson learned, I'll be sure to pay more attention to these videos... and to those hidden commands in innocent questions my wife asks. :)

I think the simplest solution to any conversation, whether you are male or female is: Say what you mean, mean what you say Anything in excess of this is intellectually dishonest, and ought to be treated as such.
Do men have it easier?
