We spend a third of our lives lying in bed, and this is not a new thing. It is perhaps the thing we share with our ancestors more than any other aspect of life. Here I talk and talk and talk about beds and related matters for what may seem like an age, but actually is only quite a long time.
I thought of three points to make about beds, and thought that these would be enough for a video. As is my habit, though, as I rambled, I sidetracked myself into more and more other things. Had there been a floor manager on duty in the studio, he would have been looking at his watch and waving at me franticly, but I just kept going. I might have chopped this into three smaller videos had I not embarked on the misguided gag involving the showing to the camera of various products that might have been paid-for placements. These gestures would have made no sense in a video which didn't end the way this one does.
I end with a tribute to all the 'unboxing' videos out there, where apparently the box is more interesting than the product in it.
It may amaze you to learn that this edit is fifteen minutes shorter than the material I shot.
This is the first video I have ever shot with my new camera. I did have problems, and it isn't better in every way, but the sharpness of the picture is noticeable, and the depth of field is shallower, which explains to some degree the moments when things go a bit blurry, and in the shot where I switch on the bedside lamp, I am amazed at how little noise there is in the black before the light comes on.

Remember reading a similar tale in Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts ( _epic_ book, well worth a look), he describes travelling into rural India and meeting a very similar reaction - the villagers he meets can't understand why he wants to sleep alone and so fear he'll get lonely and depressed. ...Always struck me as a telling truth that goes completely missed in our society... I have a suspicion, particularly over the past year's lock-down, that a great deal of people in our culture are suffering continually from the symptoms of quite extreme isolation and yet it is so normal today that it goes completely unrecognised ...with us instead giving those effects of long-term isolation names like 'Mental health problems', 'depression' etc.

What people fear greatly depends on how their culture taught them to see and understand the world. My grandmother was very afraid to end up hell after she died. I do not have that fear because I don't believe in hell. If I were rude, I would have dismissed my grandmother's fear just like you dismiss the fear of nightmares. In a lot of primordial cultures, there are beliefs that there is a spirit-world embedded into the natural world, and that this spirit world has great influence on the natural world. Dreams are often interpreted as the manifestions of the spirit-world inside the mind of the sleeper. A night-mare would be an indication that spiritworld is for some reason hostile towards the dreamer, which a very scary thing - if you believe in a spirit-world that can affect your life.

The fact that solitude and privacy were so much rarer in the past really helps put into perspective the aspersions that societies used to cast on introverted people. I for one am damn thankful to be able to sleep in my own room in my own bed, and (not counting past girlfriends or childhood sleepovers) have never enjoyed having to sleep in the same room as other people. If sleeping in groups were the norm, I could see how others would be tempted to brand me a miscreant!

Interesting, I looked it up and it looks like it was originally a round, presumably flat bread that served as a plate during medieval times. Later instead of bread it was a carved tray for the food, or perhaps if you used a metal plate, hot food would quickly heat the plate making it too hot to touch so the Trencher protected you from burns. From the looks of it, I'd call it the ancient ancestor of the cafeteria tray.

Wonderful. 1) Given the choice I'd sleep on rushes. 2) in 1964 in some hotels in Spain I'd occasionally have another man slip quietly into bed with me quite late and not stir until the pre-dawn dark, then slip away. 3) In 1974 I bought an old used inner spring mattress. I still use it, since I have never found an equally soft and comfortable mattress in a show room nor in any hotel (and the hotels I now go to are farther up the food chain than the ones of my roving youth.) A week of travel is about my max now, since I sleep so poorly on the slabs they offer. I wish I could request a pile of fresh rushes.

With the privacy issue in marriages and procreation is something I've always wondered about with Indian families when I was over there. Particularly in the lower class areas were a entire house is smaller than a western bedroom. Or middle class areas when you have one group of people sleeping on the floor in one room, and the married couple sleeping in a room behind a cotton sheet that doesn't even reach to the floor. (That said there is a lot of variation across the different areas of India I've visited in terms of housing and family dynamics so probally not much of a simple answer anywhere.)

OK. So for those people who really care. /nerd on. As a packaging designer just by looking at this outer which Lloyd so kindly demonstrated (note the Richard E Grant impersonation) This is commonly known as an 0201 printer slotter double wall corrugated fibreboard case. By the looks of it is BC double wall, one colour flexo printed on a semi chem bleached liner (uncoated as I couldn't detect a sheen) with a part kraft inner liner (not a full kraft skim as this would be darker). Considerring the weight of the contents I would recommend 200gsm liners (or there abouts). Thank you. /nerd off

Depends on culture. IIRC some mediterranian cities would basically be ghost towns at noon (everyone is inside sleeping and hiding from the heat), and then at night would go out to go about their normal business. Hotter parts of the Americas also do it, and I do believe it happens in the middle east also. I mean, why be outside trying to work in weather that can literally kill you, when you can hide inside in the shade, take a nap, and get up when the sun isn't quite so harsh, and go about your business. Yeah it'll get dark, but if you're outside and doing things as night comes along, you'd be amazed at how good your night vision is.

I'm only at 6:03 and I'm already surprised at how many ads he managed to cram in a single video. It's like an all-you-can-advertise buffet! On a more serious note, I think if you add eating and routines for after waking up and before going to sleep, you will get surprisingly close to 2/3 of human history. The only issue would be packing all that in only half an hour (or 27 minutes and 8 seconds, considering the length of this video), for 2/3 of human history to be done in an hour (or less).
